best shite big fucker - e.g. Isuzu Trooper and their ilk

Got a hankering for something stupidly unwieldy that will barely fit on the drive, drink loads of fuel and feel like a vast bowl of blancmange. Needs to be cheap, of course. To that end I came across this:

Then I suddenly realised I'm utterly pig ignorant of this kind of vehicle - there must be preferred Autoshite big fucker 4x4s - but a quick search using "4x4" as a term threw up nowt, so I'd be interested in hearing from those who've owned and run such beasts. Cheers.

Proper 4bee4s and cheep dont usually go together.

Here's one of mine.

Troopers are good but the 3.0 engine has a high failure rate, go for the older 3.1.

Ssangyong Musso or Rexton pls.

I liked my one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-explorer/192638012241?hash=item2cda1ecb51:g:PU0AAOSwdudbgplX&autorefresh=true and it ticks your boxes of fuggin hooge, likes a drink and barely fits on the drive.

Mine did prove to be utterly reliable for the 18 months I had it, although I have heard of issues relating to chain tensioners.

ooh yeah good shout

i'll see what's local

There is, naturally, only one answer that ticks all boxes, and quite frankly I’m surprised it’s taken this long.

P38 Range Rover, in 4.6 form. Cheap, wallowy and drinks petrol.

Trooper is a good shout, as long as you can find a 3.1 which isn't utterly shagged.  They're not fast and they like a drink, but they have shedloads of torque, ride reasonably well and, unusually for a big 4x4, have a decent turning circle.  Also best towcar of evAr.

I have to say I did enjoy my brief steer in Barmatt's Explorer though...

A mate in the next village had a 2000-ish one in Westminster blue that he always used to let me drive. The electrickery faults on that bastard were horrendous - he was spending a couple of grand a year on chasing suspension related faults and what-not. It was eye-watering.

Hyundai Terracan. 2.9 CRD engine, selectable 4wd. LSD rear diff. Auto or manual option. CHEAP. Not ridiculous on fuel. WILL feel like driving a tippy sailing dinghy. Never seen a rusty one, generally reliable and not overly slow.

Known problems:

Fuel pump and injectors can cause grief

LSD needs the right oil

I drive 300TDi Defenders but i'd never recommend one to anybody!

Love my Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ), unstoppable in the snow.

Not really cost that much, just make sure you get one with LPG as sub 20mpg around town is the norm.

I recently sold my 06 Hemi 5.7 powered Jeep Commander on LPG. If do you end up with a Jeep, get one of these earlier ones as mentioned above. Chrysler were going through hard times in the mid 2000s and it really showed in their product.

I had so many faults with mine. Whilst there were a few in breakers yards, the prices quoted for spares were bonkers and parts prices from main dealers defied logic. That car cost me a lot of money and just wasn't worth the money or the effort.

Don't let anybody tell you parts from the USA are cheap and easy to get hold of. By the time you've added shipping, waited for the bits to arrive and then paid VAT and Duty you'll be wishing you bought a P38 RR.

Early 80s LWB Land Cruiser. The one with the 4 litre straight six diesel.

Oh...you said cheap. Bugger.

Can you find an original Ssangyong Musso? Especially the petrol one with the nuts Merc engine. We had one through the garage back in the day and it was silly...you could basically turn the rear tyres into smoke at pretty much any speed.

Was actually quite a nice thing to waft about in though, especially as it was about a quarter of the price of the P38 Range Rover we had in at the time.

1. Land Cruiser

2.Nissan Patrol

3. Shogun ( brilliant cars. Had a few now. But only because I couldn't afford a decent Land Cruiser.

4. Erm... Military spec Humm Vee?

Had a turbo diesel one.

Utter shite. Only goods point is that they don't rot. Actually now I think about it, that is a bad point.

(Begrudging accept that they are reliable)

The Landcruiser is the daddy either 4 litre or the 4.2 will pull a house down. With Troopers the 3.1 is the only one worth going for but I ran one for a couple of years and to be honest the 300tdi Discovery I ran before it actually towed better and certainly pulled the trailer with my Silver Shadow a lot better. The P38 was the only one I found that pulled better but the fuel economy was far worse, not to mention all the normal p38 woes.

The biggest thing I'll have to tow is a trials bike, so power is secondary to pose factor and general big and brassy presence. I'm after large and stupid rather than practical and powerful. '90s to mid 2000s preferably. I think that's when the styling of this ahem segment was at its most conspicuous and vile. Which for various inexplicable reasons has started to appeal to me.

Another trials rider, what are you riding?

How about a Holden/ Chev Suburban they turn up reasonably frequently in RHD flavour, in fact I think a member mentioned selling his Chev one a week or so ago.

I loved my wj Grand Cherokee. It was a 4.7 on LPG, ex Bavarian Retro on here.

It felt very much like a slightly modernized Range Rover Classic. Recommended.

I have massive want for a previous generation Grand Cherokee, it'd need to be on LPG though
