Hi,

I'm Andrew, from N.W. England originally but now hiding out in the forests of middle Sweden.

Found this site by complete accident after crashing towards my 40th and buying myself a v6 Calibra (had one when I was 19-20 so there is some sad history...) then looking for some hints/tips on fixing it up. Well technically I bought 2... one running car, one donor car / both from 1997.... but littering the land around the house with used cars seemed appropriate and common here in Sweden though it's normally old Volvos.

Found no hints and tips that I could use but did find a lot of hilarious threads, banter and great picture porn of all kinds of old cars - so I plan to hang around, if that's allowed

Cheers for now

Andrew

Was looking for some pointers on "must-do" service/repair/maintenance- planning to swap the placcy cam covers for some made from "real" metal - wonder if there's any other common faults I can remedy in advance?

Also going to do a cam belt - my first, have the locking kit and not frightened to have a go but any pointers?

Hello everyone. Found my way here from Skoda Owners Club.

Have always driven shite and loved almost every rain-sodden-hard-shoulder-minute of it.

Cars since my first in 2001 (including what killed them):

1990 Vauxhall Nova Trip 4 speed 997cc which was tragically destroyed in a hit-and-run while parked outside my local. Bought 20 fags and 6 beers with the scrap money.

2001 Fiat Punto 1.2 which I bought brand new and lasted one whole week before starting a never-ending series of breakdowns ffs. Left it with an ex-girlfriend after she proved to be just as loose as most of the parts on the Fiat.

1996 Proton Persona 1.6 (radiator/head gasket/steam/oil etc)

2000 Proton Satria 1.3 in GOLD!! At 8 years old, this was my second newest car ever after my disastrous Punto. Death by timing belt.

1997 Ford Ka (the wife's), sold on and saw it around for a few years.

1996 306 1.9 straight diesel with uber-cool push button ignition fitted after attempted theft screwed electrics. Free car from mother-in-law. Rear axle bowed ridiculously in the end so scrapped for £150 profit.

1999 Focus Estate (dogs bollix it was) uneconomical welding bill finished it off.

1999 Saxo 1.0 underpowered shite (catastrophic overheat - I just kept on driving through the steam cos I was very late for work)

2001 106 1.1 killed by artic on roundabout which was a damn shame cos it was immaculate (32k) and written off for double what I paid for it. #bargain

2001 Fiesta mk4 temporary comedy shite for 3 months after 106 RTA. Sold for banger racing.

Our current "fleet" consists of:

2002 Zafira still going strong(ish) pulling our 30yr old caravan and doing runs to the scrappy.

2005 Hyundai Matrix which technically belongs to me but is too dull for words and you won't catch me dead in. Wife loves it :-/

1995 Skoda Favorit LxIE Flairline in Caribbean Green. My pride and joy shite bought for £130 (with a £500 number plate included!) as another stop gap after my Pug 106 died. Trying to resurrect it while learning how cars work (or don't).

Ramble over. Looking forward to continuing my adventures in shite in your esteemed company.

They're fairly tough old beasts tbh, apart from warping plastic cam covers (replace with alloy Vectra B covers but they're getting harder to find) the only thing that really goes wrong under the bonnet is the alternator packing up due to its location behind the rear bank of cylinders. My advice here is to make sure the original cool air ducting & fan are still in place, a mate of mine got through two alternators before realising that this ducting actually does work.

Oh yes - DIS packs can crack & allow water ingress... symptom is occasionally not running on all 6. Replacement is the only real option here, mine's had 2 in 9 years (so not too bad)

If you find you've got vibration under acceleration the inboard CV joints on the propshafts are usually the culprit. Vectra B driveshafts are the same.

Defective door courtesy lights are usually due to corroded terminals in the wiring that runs along the floor in the front footwells, water collects in the footwells from sunroof drain tubes, water in the scuttle backing up due to leaves blocking the "elephant's trunk".

That's really all that goes wrong with them. Radiators have been a bastard to find for the V6 over recent years, they were out of stock for ages throughout Europe, but I've heard rumours that they're available again now.

I've only ever changed cambelts on engines out of the vehicle so I don't have any pointers for you there, sorry :-(

Anyway, why don't you start a thread with some pics of your fleet? There are a few of us Calibra fans in here!

Hi I am Chris, long time lurker first time poster.

As you can probably guess, I have a 2cv, which I have owned for 21 years, and driven for most of them! The last few years have not been good with a dead engine, then electrical problems which took 6 months to fix - there are only about 4 wires on the car!  It has currently been off the road since June, with a leak which I haven't got around to fixing. To be honest, I have rather lost faith in the car, but having had it so long, it is practically family.

My "modern" car is a 2002 Clio, which is a great little car, only problem being it is now getting to the worth nothing keep until it breaks, or sell while there is any value left stage.

My car CV includes a 1985 Metro in Primrose, which was great fun. Leaked like a sieve, but went really fast( remember that my other car was a 2cv!), then a .1996 Rover 100 which was a really good little car, but just came to the end of its life.

Looking at the work some of you have done makes me want to get the 2cv going again. Only problem is, that it is 70 miles away at my parents house!

Spot on, cheers for the pointers - now I know where that mysterious air duct leads... As soon as I'm over the 5 post bump I will get a thread up with pics

Evening all,

Figured I should say hello, found this place via a link to fatharris' MG ZT thread and then got further drawn in with vulgalour's 414...I seem to have a soft spot for Rovers!

Current fleet is all Longbridge built so shite in most of the populations mind!

1986 MIni was definite shite when bought for £100 in 2002, now its had considerably more spent on it and will be staying with us forever. Having said that, like most of my projects its still not actually finished - hopefully I'll pick up some inspiration here.

1998 Rover 216 Coupe, now my wifes car, and in need of some love and care as its looking a bit worse for wear now.

FInally a late 1.8T Rover 75 ('06 plate when finally registered), picked up cheap from a family friend, great, comfortable car with all the gadgets (I love heated seats!). I do wish it had a V8 in it.

That's me, the 1990 Micra disappeared early this year, it would have fitted in well here I think.

Hello,

First time poster short time Lurker, the fleet is currently only two vehicles strong.

First up is the 1993 Defender 110 200tdi CSW (OK probably not shite), mostly standard & a rolling restoration. i.e. is fixed for the MOT each year.

post-20130-0-85902500-1452877781_thumb.jpg

2nd up and far more intresting is the turquoise 214SI purchased for the grand total of £395 16months ago, either I paid to much or prices have come down since then. 2 previous owners, enterprise or some other rental company for 6 montths in 1997 then a giffer owner till October '14, apparently a retired worker from the Rover plant in Cowley if the used car dealer is to belived....

I've spoit it far to much the work to date incudes:

4 new tyres

New radiatior (brand new £12.99 from ebay, probably made of cheese)

1 new caliper

New front pads and discs

Welding on one sill

Discovering it doesn't like the last 5l of pez in the tank (hence the photos)

Unsusesfull sunroof leak fix

Service

Reinstatement of SRS light

Purchase of roof bars

post-20130-0-39527200-1452877790_thumb.jpg

Final photo is the Megané bridged in October '14 far rougher than it looks in the photo - many rust holes in the sill, dents every where (incuding roof) but a cracking car £103 in scrap then, how prices have changed!

Thats all

My particular affliction is Czech shite, and you'll see here my second Felicia.

Sideways photograph and everything.

Not sure if the disdain and mockery that usually follows these cars extends to AS, but for my sins, I adore them.

Inbetween the two Fellys I had a Rover 200. Yes. With the K Series Engine. No prizes for guessing how we parted company, but it featured a huge cloud of white smoke.

I stumbled here with a stupid question and was relieved to find others who look at a sensible modern cars and see nothing but boredom.

Good to be here.

Feel like a bit of an intruder tbh. Have three cars, none of them old, none of them particularly shit at anything other than swallowing fuel.

07 Merc 420GL aka The Steroidal Hippo. Very fast, very thirsty, with a shadow that blots out the sun. Currently on 120k

06 Merc 220 estate. Another weasel, this one in Dull Accountancy Grey with Retail Black leather and 130k. Boring, dependable, actually quite nice to drive.

09 Ollivander The Panda. Yet another dag-dag, one for my daughter to drive.

That said, I've had some seriously shit cars over the years. Happy to tell you all about the appalling Visa if anyone cares, or the truly terrible Cadillac Seville.

I'd say the GL420 is probably very good at swallowing fuel.

Welcome!

Yeah, you're right. Even with a 110 litre fill you can empty the tank fearsomely fast. Not exactly the ideal low-cost commuter.

Hello fellow shiters - its not really a collection of shite at the moment although im proudto admit that ive had lots of real shit over the years. Currently have a P38 Range Rover, a Camel Trophy Discovery 300tdi and a Mercedes V220 Ambiente - the posh w638 Vito :-)

Im considering flogging the Merc and partaking in something crap to play around with - I've got a fancy for a Lada at the moment or Mk1 Mondeo estate.
