captain_70s Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Not gonna' lie, even with my extensive experience of shit rusty British cars having that on my drive would give me the fears! Good luck and god speed, may your mechanical components be forever Imperial and your welds lumpy. ShiteRider, drum, Dave_Q and 2 others 5
SiC Posted June 21, 2018 Author Posted June 21, 2018 Don't say that! I said to Mike that I'd like to get it done by the end of the year. His response was that it would be good going to be done by then!? He says that and he does it for a living too. It's put the fear into me.
Mally Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Could have been worse, he could have left the tow car! SiC and timolloyd 2
Remspoor Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 If you paint it red then everyone over a certain age will call you Basil. The red one on Fleabay is looking like a Yank version.I like this project and I like the tow car too.
tul66 Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Fucking headlamp peaks! (I'll leave it to Junkman to voice his views on the whitewalls ) The reality with red (when not over-saturated).... SiC Posted June 21, 2018 Author Posted June 21, 2018 If you paint it red then everyone over a certain age will call you Basil. When explaining what a Austin 1100 to people my age, I usually use the Basil reference! I personally don't mind it. I also they look pretty neat blue too. Anyway less talk about painting it, I have a crap load of work to do before then. I might clean down and spray the crusty bits on top to protect the exposed parts to stop them getting any worse. Those pictures above don't quite show quite the work needing to do. Carlosfandango 1
junkyarddog Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Looks like shadowman in that second pic is tearing his hair out,as the reality of the situation begins to take hold...... SiC and alf892 2
xkjagnz Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 I'm a big fan of the gunmetal with minilites one (pic stolen from Vulg's thread) scdan4, Joey spud, purplebargeken and 5 others 8

vulgalour Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 As a bonus it also cuts out the annoying fizzing noise all the rust is making. Eddie Honda, catsinthewelder, RayMK and 1 other 4
egg Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 (whispers quietly) applejack green. Good luck with this. With your attention to detail, I'm sure it will turn out well. Dick Cheeseburger 1
SiC Posted June 21, 2018 Author Posted June 21, 2018 To be honest, it'll probably be whatever colour is available from the Painters Touch range. http://makeityours.co.uk/product/painters-touch/ Some aren't actually that far off BL colours to be fair.
SiC Posted June 21, 2018 Author Posted June 21, 2018 Perhaps I should upcycle it with some chalk paint? http://makeityours.co.uk/product/chalky-finish-furniture-paint-spray/ *Dodges Vulgalour throwing a bumper at him* vulgalour 1
Guest Hooli Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 You can get whiteboard paint now for maximum resale value*
SiC Posted June 21, 2018 Author Posted June 21, 2018 We have special wipeboard paint on quite a few walls at work, so you can write directly onto those walls. Two walls worth of paint is nearly the same on what I paid for the car - delivered!
Guest Hooli Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Aye we priced it up at work the other week & went 'eeeek'
SiC Posted June 21, 2018 Author Posted June 21, 2018 So I haven't actually had a good look at this car yet, apart from a very brief chat with Mike. The car came pretty much when Mrs SiC was doing the weekly house clean and I was supposed to be helping. I also promised that I would get our holiday booked and sorted this evening. Hence to keep the peace, I was busy inside sorting that. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get a chance to have a good poke, prod and look round. I'll try to take a few more photos too. Fingers crossed Mike should be home and safe in around the next hour or two. A very long day for him - especially after all the hold up and delays on the roads.
purplebargeken Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Charming cars. Looking forward to following this.
vulgalour Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Painters Touch range is what I've used on the Princess. I chucked some Halfords lacquer on top which helps with the finish and prevents it fading. I noticed with the darker purple that it faded after being sat outside for several months, not much, you could bring it back with a clean and a wax. Lacquer seems to stop the fading altogether. It also improves in colour and finish after the first month or so, and the finish is really very tough. I wonder if it has some sort of rust preventative property to it too because it really does seem to slow down rust coming back even when you put it on rusty stuff and don't do a very good job. It's very cheap, and easy to get on eBay in large enough bulk to do a whole car. If you do go this route, get a clip-on plastic spray handle, it'll save your digits from going numb and you can get a more controlled spray when applying. They're cheap too, I bought mine a good 20 years ago and it's the same design as ones they still produce, and when taking inflation into account it's one of the few things that's actually got cheaper. vulgalour Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 Mike got home at about 1:20am, very tired, straight to bed. He's up again at 7am to return the trailer. Poor bastard. SiC 1
SiC Posted June 22, 2018 Author Posted June 22, 2018 That's good he got back safe. Not too bad a time, especially after the different hold ups. Massive thanks to Mike for delivering it! Absolute star. purplebargeken 1
MikeKnight Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 Was nice to meet you too SiC. The cupcake from your missus was worth the trip. purplebargeken, SiC and scdan4 3

Parky Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 Although this is pretty darn sexy too in BMC Rallying colours These are a fine looking car. If Rover were still around I think a modernised version of this could make an excellent Retro Metro - lovely design touches everywhere Joey spud, Carlosfandango and outlaw118 3
SiC Posted June 22, 2018 Author Posted June 22, 2018 The two tone Strawberries and cream does look particularly lush.
Exiled_Tat_Gatherer Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 properly lovely these cars...... mine was absolutely shagged though, and I thought I'd 'checked'!Best of luck wi your first resto...... if you're estimating end of year - 2020 should be doable
Skizzer Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 Aqua green (or whatever this early 70s turquoise colour is called) is THE best colour for these, and Minis too. FACT. captain_70s, mk2_craig, MorrisItalSLX and 6 others 9
