W210 E240 Merc auto. Much better than the overrated hewn from granite heap that came before it and it drives like something for this millennium. A grand will buy a really decent one as they are unwanted and virtually worthless.

E39 528i manual. Get one before the driftmongs ruin them all. R-S reg (single Vanos) best as they have the E34 ABS and cooling systems that never go wrong. They are thinning out now but a good one is still a superior thing to drive, amazingly refined with an excellent ride. Autos are probably risky at this age.

Japanese? Apart from the LS400, cause of death on the sheet will be written in blue ink as 'boredom'.

French/Italian/Ford/Austin Roewe/VAG. Not me guv.

Anticipating some grimness unavoidability I did eBay and Autotrader searches.

Not having been in this game for over a decade, little did I know to what extent cars became hopelessly deprived of any charm, panache and flair.

I'm seriously depressed now.

Did people become like they are because of these cars, or is it the other way around?

Be it as it may, I lost my will to live.

manual.

You either gotta be fuckin joking, or high on something I'd like to avoid like the clap.

ABS

Only if it can be permanently switched off.

I agree re. those Japanesish dung heaps there. There will not be another Chink Junk in the Junkstable. Ever.

For some reason I get the feeling that Herr Junkman and LJKS had similar priorities in a car; a good auto, comfortable ride, large enough engine etc.

Although Setright may not have been reviewing cars for some time, his favourites are often still available, and at good value. That prelude looks excellent - i'd be off for a look had I not emptied the Lwallet on a silly Subaru - and they were rated highly by him.

Merc S class probably not appropriate these days, and der fuhrerwagen has just moved on anyway, so perhaps something else.

Why should I pay the high rate tax for a 240 when the 420 costs the exact same amount to tax?

The problem is that the higher up the range you go the more likely it is that some wonderful sophisticated more complicated ancillary or other mechanical device(s) will explode and ruin the budget. The 240s are a bit of a sweet spot in that regard.Pretty good performance without too much complicated stuff.

Caution: Boring and sensible thought here.

Spend the newly aquired funds on the existing fleet, making it as good as it can be?

Alternatively, have you considered indulging your inner OLLI?

The 405 is good, but commandeered by the Junkwoman who regularly puts up a fight when I try to wrestle the keys from her fist.

No matter how much of its delightful shabby chicness I remove from the R16, it will not be suitable for rocking up at clients.

OLLI would be a nice toy if I were the man who already has everything, but it's not fit for the purpose I currently need a self propelled appliance for.

I CAN HAZ TEH SCARES!

Nothing wrong with that. As long as there is oil and coolant plus a working wasserpumpe, there's nowt to go wrong here. That rad can be changed in about 45 minutes. Anything after 9/98 and you're into double vanos, push fit clip on hoses, an ABS module designed to go tits up and that general E46 style rubbishness.

Wot ee sed. 240's go pretty well and they're not bad on fuel at all.

The same goes for the E39 - the 540i isn't much more $$$$ to buy but you just fuel and fix the fucking thing. 18 mpg average = not fun.

Trouble is, no cars that tick all of my boxes have ever been made, and none which tick most of my boxes have been made for about 30 years.

Thus, whatever I drive is much less than what I want.

When it is transport that you are after, you just have to ignore your own prejudices and pick from what is there, finding an aspect of whatever tool you that you drive to really enjoy.

You need proper acceleration, style, class and french electrics!

Due to further fleet reduction needs, this is 4sale:

PM me in interested.

P.S.

sorry, just seen your budget limit... won't fit your budget...

The Merc didn't yield more than that?

I'm all for a single vanos manual 528i (bit  biased here), not sure if it would be the right car for Mr. Schrottmann tho? I'd go with another cloth seat Merc, or maybe a C6 with base model C5 seats...

I have read literally nothing in this thread other than noticing the invitation to suggest possible replacement vehicles.

I recall spotting this and realising that it could possibly only offend Junkman a modest amount rather than to a degree which would put my name on a list of some kind. Hence the following link:

I'd put in normal coloured light bulbs and to fuck what the client thinks.

Or just get a Jazz CVT (and fuck what the client thinks)

What Sir clearly* needs is a DAF 66... Spacious, comfortable, stylish and automatic.

E28 in Rentnerbronzit-metallic as 520i or 525e are just on the edge of getting rare and expensive. The eta drive superbly!

Just need some matching corduroys.

Tayne was explaining the complexity of P38s to me at SF.

You'd be fine with one of these.

Is a 190E not suitable? 2.6s can be had for fuck all and show up fairly regularly.

If you're bothered about image, a tidy giffer spec 7 would be a good choice.

Some sort of Jag XJ would also work and fir your budget. Older the better of course.

Conrad was saying he regretted selling his, you know...

I completely understand the appeal of a 205 Gentry, I'd quite like one actually.
