Ford Mondeo Base - Sale aborted.

Love the spec list on that brochure, for base cars they always reach so hard to list things that cars should just have as "features"

Remote fuel filler flap

An interior light with delayed turn off

Reclining front seats

Not just a clock, a quartz 12/24 hour digital clock

The decadence!

so that was the 1994 brochure, here is a rubbish scan of the 93 equivalent.

Were the side door mouldings available only with a certain spec? Some have them, some don't.

- It has original Allen Ford dealer sticker, suggesting possible Romford(?) registration.

Pretty sure it will be -  my old M-reg Escort had a registration ending ML and originally came from Allen in Romford, via the Ford employee discount scheme.

yeah, I've done that before and all the FMC press cars were Feb builds.

Somewhere I've got that really sad spreadsheet I made of all the early Mondeo's.....

The T plate Mondeo 1.8 LX Mk2 I bought as a pre-reg from Evans Halshaw in Cardiff in May 1999 had definitely been built in the summer of 1998, so I’m not surprised by the long period between build and registration for this one particularly as I can’t imagine it was the most desirable spec.

If Boggy doesn't swoop in and pick it up for loose change this morning - I'm going to have a look at this later on today with a view to

A) Buying it for another member who has asked me to play go-between

2) Buying it for a £7 raffle and donating all profits to charity

D) Absolutely not buying it for myself, keeping it at work, registering it at my parent's house and denying all knowledge of its existence

 Z) Boggy buys it for £200 and sells it you for £300.

You underestimate just how bloody tight I am. (!)

Genuinely - and I'm not just saying this - I look at the list and think "well...what else do you want or need?" But I concur, I love how they try and give the "M&S" treatment to a timekeeping device!

My Dad had an LX - M828 GFP - and off the top of my head all I can think he got extra was a rev counter and a 1.8 engine.  I know there's more like mouldings etc blah but DILLIGAF?

I wondered if it was a Romford reg but when I checked it it suggested Buckinghamshire?

I had an early Mk2 at one point. It was on a P plate but built late 1996, had a few Mk1 bits on it like the manifold and Cat on it. Found a lot of this out when the manifold cracked. Couldn't get another for love nor money in the breakers at the time, so I had it welded up, the new one I found on ebay was almost £300.

The guy has given me first refusal - and I've just been to look over it whilst he was elsewhere.  I can't get my photos up atm as my phone got dropped last week and now doesn't respond to anything.  I can't even answer calls.  I will drag the photos off my phone later on.

It's all there - little bit of rust on the inside lip of the rear arches but nothing to panic about.  Too cold to get on my arse and check the sills but nothing visably wrong.  All wheel trims present and correct, huge speedo there and it looked complete.  It also looked down on its luck after a week of being driven around in the snow and salt.

I'm going to drive it when he is available and if the clutch is good then great.  But we need a plan.  Someone has come forward wanting me to buy it on their behalf so if that's confirmed that is what will happen.

All of them at this age will have a few scabs on the arch, the thick sealant on the arch peels off. That's nothing to worry about. The ends of the sills can be tricky, if you look at the sill there should be an arrow pressed into the sill, they go there usually, then on the lip where the inner sill connects, don't be surprised if this bit is made up of mastic and dodgy welding. They can also rot behind the liners where the wheel tub mets the boot floor, look from the inside for rust round the seam sealer. Frequently these rust the whole way down to the seatbelt anchorage. Not too tricky a repair providing you are happy to weld it from the inside plating it.

You might find the clutch quite high, they are like that from new, but itll be obvious if the clutch is goosed. Early 93 models were cable clutch, hydraulic on came in a bit after launch.

Biggie though after rust is the floor, lift the carpets and feel underneath on passenger side, if its wet it might be the pollen filter seal but don't bank on it, as much likelyhood is the seam sealer on the bulkhead/behind wings has dried out.

Weirdly - all the glass is etched with a code that says PR 5xxx (the x's being numbers)

Does that mean owt?

I’ll be up for a roffle ticket or several.

If you mean the Renner 30, then it did get saved and not towed to the bridge; but true we didn't all each get a go in it in the end

I'll give this Mondeo a chance by offering a £pony, but matching Mr RoverChodbother Cheatham's £nifty might stretch.

Renault 30 is quite safe - it's undercover on a farm near Ferrybridge services, which is no bad thing as it wouldn't likely have survived another winter outside where it was - the sills had more or less disappeared in the year I had it on that drive. Me and the new keeper have kind of made friends, and so are going to tackle it together, although it will likely be a few years before any rides materialise I'm sorry to say - it's just such a huge job!  :( On the plus side, he does have a friend who will do him a full respray on a car just for the cost of paint - a full respray is something I could never run to! Once the weather clears up a bit I'm off to pick up a replacement bonnet for it from the borders region, because the old one is well and truly fooked. Will post some photos of the R30 in it's new home when I have them.

Factoid. On the continent in some places the base Mk1 came with unpainted black bumpers. Furiously trying to find a picture but I've seen one.

Last Part of the chassis number, they changed the security window etchings to last part of chassis numbers on late sierras rather than the number plate

From my memory having one of these a firms motor (94/L Estate) the change was quite baulky even when new.  By that I mean if the change isn't the best it doesn't necessarily mean borked.
