What's the rule of nine?

It's for adjusting tappets on 4 cylinder 8V engines. When valve 1 is fully down you check/adjust valve 8, when valve 2 is down you do valve 7 etc.

Posted

The inlet and exhaust valve number always should add up to nine. ;)

It doesn't help at all, because you have to know valve numbers and gap etc, so you've got about 20 different numbers in your head at one time.

easier to do by firing order and 'rocking'......so when number one is rocking adjust both on number 4. Works on all engines and means you only need to turn it twice

Been ragging the 306 dizzler to work and back seeing if it would effect the mpgeez but it hasn't. It's improved it. Used to get a solid 50 near enough everywhere without trying at all. But gone up and bit. It is a easy blast to work though all motorway and a about a couple of mins normal roads either side. But due to its lack of power I have been flat to the floor on the way home.

I'm loving the new forum, its wall-to-wall shite and no more drivel about knob-shaped countries etc. Great stuff!

Yes it's nice isn't it. There's about 5 people in the new section talking to themselves about the colour of cat's anuses while the main area is back to how it used to be.

It's the one that doesn't work on Ford ohv.

What's the firing order on them then?

That's only properly impressive if we know what car you managed it in.  Doesn't count if it's a dizzler Mk1 Panda, absolutely does count if it's a V8 P6 (and we'll all call you a liar).

My Citroen AX has fixed its stalling problem, me taking the carb apart last weekend had no effect but blindly driving on seems to have done the trick. I doubt that will work for the clicking cv joint though.

Merc 300E auto: 28mpg on the last tank, in mixed use.

I can live with that...  B)

Cav's ebay tat thread entries this mornig have just had me in giggles in the office. Espically the "Car Requirments" one.

Just been to the Dooovla office to tax the Visa. Due to the impeding closure of the office they do not seem to give any fucks whatsoever as I managed to tax the car without producung my insurance or the MOT.

I think I might go down next week and tax a couple more.....

Rover P6 V8 22.6 OMGMPG. A new record?

No. I once managed 26mpg in mine. I'm really not sure how! Tempted to see if I can hit 60mpg in the Sirion but I imagine I'd die of boredom first. I bet my wife could do it, because she's sensible and doesn't get a 'buzz' from an enraged, screaming triple. "It just sounds like an engine."

Was a long jaunt to Wales, largely ignoring motorways and it got dark and wet before the end. This meant I gave the throttle pedal much respect, especially as I knew the tyres were a bit iffy. Generally, it did no better than 20.

Posted

You always get more MPG in Wales as you have to travel everywhere at 40mph due to there being no motorways! I got a genuine 34 out of the Mondeo while driving across wales once.

Not sure the mountains did me any favours. Even going down them. Locking into first gave sod all engine braking! Also, it's not until you drive an old car in Wales that you realise what a brilliant invention the wiper stalk was. And intermittent wipers. Having to twist a knob, which doesn't illuminate so you can't see it at night, every few seconds because the blades judder if the screen too dry is seriously annoying. The Rover made up for it by sounding awesome and looking superb.

Since the forum has been split I don't even need my ignore member list, none of them post in this bit.  Makes me very happy.

Unfortunately I do. But on balance, that's a good thing.

I've had seven P6s, of which three had working intermittent wipers - and one of those packed up after a short while.  It can't be that difficult to wire in a modern(ish) electronic relay though, rather than relying on the vacuum-operated bollocks?
