I have bought a car!

Once again, sight unseen, over the phone. I promised I would not do this again!

But, it's a Mazda MX5 mk2 (which I didn't want) in green (which I didn't want) and... there endeth the bad news :)

It's an auto, old fella owned who has spent a fortune on it: kept in a garage, colour matched hardtop, wood trim, cream leather, new stereo, leccy windows pas etc.  It is MOTd until October the 6th and it's MOT history is really good - no mention of rust except on a road spring! Has a private plate and all sorts of goodies are getting chucked in as the chap is giving up driving - even giving me his sat nav!

Mate is collecting me on Friday after work and then off down to jolly old Plymouth to collect :)

Cowley failed its MOT today....Yes, yes I know its exempt but I like someone other than me to check it out and MOTs cheapest way.   Anyhoo...looks like at least 3 new rubber spring shackle bushes and one new rear cylinder fitted three years ago have shat the bed already.   Looks like I will have to poly bush the bastard cos ALL RUBBA IS SHITE NOWADAZE including the seals in brake cylinders.....

You shouldn't polybush the seals in your brake cylinders.

No idea where to put this, so it ended up here. Was watching the box and some cringe-worthy Mother's Day advert from 'Pandora' came on. This was at the end...

^^^^^^^^ Ooh, Ford Corcel Mouselfakes? Gr8 Ford/Renault 12 mashup, I think they look ace, especially the massive headlights on later models.

Anyway......

I always forget Peugeot trim designations, 'GR' is low rung aye.

Miss_Peel likes 205s but it would really need to have PAS for her crap wrists, especially one with an XUD.

I don't know how much more an XUD weighs than an XU9 but unless Miss_Peel (that sounds temptingly like Emma Peel from the Avengers) has issues with her wrists rather than just flimsy ones, it may be worth trying out one without PAS, as although they're a bit heavy, Mrs_Jon coped for a long time with a non-PAS GTI before her Clio came along. She's less than 8 stone in weight and has comically tiny wrists but didn't find too much issue, other than low speed parallel parking, etc. I must admit that my brother's old 1.1 205 XE was a lot heavier to steer than my AX 11RE I had at the same time, despite narrower (145) tyres, so maybe try an AX if she's any love for those?

Anyway, all this talk reminds me that we picked up our 205 five years ago this Saturday (it was my birthday, so an easy date to remember) and it's still knocking about nicely enough and has had few issues, so I reckon it's a permanent driveway resident now, even though it's been replaced. I dare say it's probably risen in value, compared to the £900 or so we paid for it. Which is nice.

Here is a picture of the scabby little thing rigged up to our camping trailer for the purposes of a mildly amusing photograph:

She is quite strong but her joints suffer when she's flaring with lupus, especially her fingers and wrists. 205s aren't the only option, she likes pretty much anything with wedgy/square styling.

I don't think I've driven a 205 diesel without power steering, but the Rover 218D I owned without PAS put me off buying another FWD diesel car without it - a real struggle at parking speeds, and I'm not a weakling.

My MX5 has just been giffered:

2016-03-03%2013.07.27_zpsaqnjru7b.jpg

A Fiesta didn't stop at a junction and ran into my rear quarter... then carried on along the pavement, making me think I'd been hit by a stolen car for a few seconds.  Then it stops, and a tiny shaken old man shuffles out on a walking stick... he apologises and admits he never saw me.  Being a fool, I end up feeling sorry for him as he couldn't walk without my assistance, and it was clearly dawning on him that his driving days may be at an end, so I tell him to forget about it.

Like it's owner, this MX5 hasn't been pretty for a long time so I'll just put a new tail lamp on and carry on.  Anyone got one they can sell me?

I might have one tomorrow night! The one I'm 'getting' has Lexus lights but comes with the originals as well.

If it comes off, I'll give you a shout. *

*That means: you shout at me as I will forget, then remember in three weeks time but forget who asked, what thread, when....

I've bought my first Japanese car.

A 90's GT, at auction, on the other side of the world.

Small update.

My Alpine A610 passed it's MOT today with no advisories which is a result. I have agreed to buy another GTA which will rock up at the end of this month. That makes the Alpine tally to technically 6 (2 breakers, 3 projects and the A610) which is too many so I need to get rid over the next few months which will keep me busy.

Just taxed the camper so we will be spending some time away in that again this year which I'm looking forward to.

The Polo is coming up to 12 months in our possession and all it's needed so far touch wood is a battery.

Eunos Cosmo 20B

Massively jealous, the best interior of any car ever ... when real life calms down (maybe next year) I will get one, and a Boon X4.

Phwoar yeah, the interior in those is mega innit. I remember Setright being a massive fan so that's me sold!

Not been very active on here recently - sorry, just work related (very busy time of year for me) Still have all the same old shite but not done owt much with em.

L300 Camper pulled from hibernation but has a horrible engine oil leak that I need to get to the bottom of. Old school 2.5 non turbo diesel as fitted to the Shogun/L200 - if anyone has any obvious pointers let me know as it's leaving oil slicks everywhere!!!

Marina - has not been touched which is really embarassing as I really want that on the road for this year.

Subaru pick up - agian not done any work on it but i've started and moved it just to keep it feeling wanted !!

AMC Cub - now, that I have been working on, nearly ready for paint.

Mitsubishi Lancer - still continues to provide reliable service although is looking very sorry for itself and needs a damn good clean and refresh.

Anglia - All taxed/tested and insured.. Waiting for better weather so I can start using it. Just had the rediff upgraded to a 3.5 and had it refurbished. Hope it makes a differance as the engine was not suited to the 3.9. I should update my main thread but just got lazy i'm afraid..

I went to look over one of those Cosmo's for someone on here a couple of years ago. Whoever it was had been after one for years and saw a white one for sale just up the road from me. Amazing looking car, but you'd need the balls of a lion to consider running one as a daily.

It was me ... I remember your detailed report and still think I should have bid more on the damn thing despite all the work it needed.

I still owe you a pint for that one.

Been and drawn out cash for tomorrows collection and just insured it. I was going to wait and insure it after purchase/after I've actually seen this thing/make sure it exists. But, I have such a fear of NOT having insurance!

When I was young, rider policy from Norwich Union on a Suzuki B120P (8 of us insured the same bike!) and daily ride Z1000 Z1R. Legal? Hardly but it passed inspection by the boys in blue so who cared? I didn't give a fuck and the longer I could get away with not insuring something, the happier I was. Now? Scared to death.

So, after doing the comparison sites, down to £205 with 'Premium Choice. All good. You have to ring through to them but freephone... 57 minutes I was talking to them! No problem, just the slowest, most complicated procedure imaginable and I've got to send them a copy of the V5 for the Bentley to prove the MX is a genuine second car!

He was a nice guy and it was a pleasant chat, but fuck me, 57 minutes!

I came home last night to find my polish neighbours pushing their car around the car park as the battery was flat. Being a helpful sort I offered to give them a jump start so got the leads out and moved the a3 into position. A third chap who was with them reached for the leads and asked "does it matter which one goes where ?", I don't think he was trying to be funny 8)

The leads were hooked up successfully and it fired up straight away, the third chap was very relieved as he'd "just bought it and had to drive it back to derby tonight" it turns out I'd stumbled on someone's half arsed collection thread :)

Although why he would travel all the way from Derby to Falkirk (scotchland) to buy a ropey old Mazda 6 remains yet a mystery.

I hope he made it home safe.

As you may know, I'm one of those blokes that is incapable of doing anything more than checking the oil and consequently has to pay for all works at a variety of garages.

After an astonishing bill for a Porsche engine rebuild and an eye watering little number for heat exchangers, ehu, mot and service on the t2. Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of paying a very few pounds for a full service, a precautionary cam belt and a few bits on the Scirocco. It reminds me why I come on this site.

Is that ^^^^ why I haven't seen a Barefoot Motoring Costs update for a while? Too many numbers? Good to hear the Scirocco is making an effort on the scrimping front.

Also, I am very heartened by reading the recent good deeds done, helping Polish colectioneers, Fat Pirate's pensioner kindness, etc.

Karma will repay you all.

Funny as I am off to inspect an allegedly mint 91 scirocco this morning, my brother is a vicar an conducted the late owners funeral. The widow is stuck with his pride and joy and wants an honest opinion of what it's worth and the best way to move it on.
