Thanks, it's just a 2500 grit wet and dry followed by Farecla G3 compound mop and a another mop with some 3m finesse-it. I haven't hand polished it yet but I've read that some stuff called Poorboys World black hole is meant to be excellent on black paint so I've ordered a bottle up from eBay for £11 and with give it a go with that before finishing with some Mer wax.

Not very autoshite I know but I find it very rewarding restoring such poor paintwork. It's still as scabby as fook though!.

I think Farecla wax top knocks spots off lots of stuff for black cars, i proved it on my mates puma after he had already polished it with some stuff he paid silly money for

If you do tfr the engine bay trig make sure you give it a good wax under there after because it will strip any protection, you no doubt know this already though and I'm trying to teach my granny to such eggs

Black hole is the bollocks! Will hide those swirl marks and give it a deep gloss. Finish off with a combo of chemical guys blacklight and some nice wax (i swear by nattys blue) and itll look so wet youll try to dive into it!

Posted

My sd1 was covered in that stuff I presume that's why it was still alive. With bl products removing any rust protection could mean waking up and finding just four wheels and a pile of dust sitting outside .

Posted

I might leave it on then! I haven't seen that Farecla top wax before, I've just bought this Mer stuff so I need to use that up first. The paintwork is already looking "wet" I can't believe it could look like that as it was flatter than a witches tit before I started!

Good luck with the house Vulg, hope you get it. Sounds like the sort of place I could do with...

Accomplished shiter Chompy_snake is another year older today, the 9th of October.  He's had quite a record over the last couple of years, here's just some of the hopeless old crocks.

Just a bit of surface rust, that. Impressive that your sills haven't even been given the usual brush painted Hammerite/Stone chip job that most un-restored cars have

I wouldn't bother cleaning off the anti-rust wax, just scrub everything down with a cloth and water until it's a clean as possible. Every time I clean my engine bay it's filthy within 100 miles again anyway...

I can't remember if I said but I've got it home now, the brakes seem to be losing pressure when I have my foot on the pedal even after rebuilding the master cylinder and bleeding the system 3 times, I wonder if the servo has a leak?.

Trigg, Falling pedal will be a leak, master cylinder seals passing internally (sometimes visible as turbulence in reservoir), air in system, possibly brake adjustment/squidgy linings or pads. Leaking servo cannot give falling pedal.......

Posted

Can it not? That's very odd then as we've rebuilt the master cyl, unless the seals we used aren't up to the job?

It does sound like air in the system or the master cylinder. To rule out the servo with the engine off pump the pedal about 20 times then hold the pedal down. If the hydrulics are ok it will give a firm pedal. If you keep it held down then start the engine the pedal should drop a small amount but shouldn't creep.

It seems to work. Why take it off? Shiny engines are for losers people with far more dedication than me.

get it driven and out in some odd places

Don't worry too much about that stuff, just get it fettled and MOT'd. That will give you the motivation to bring it over to my place and car titivation can take place whilst you gaze upon the green Rover and Dolomite.

that

clean it after you use it not before :D

As the Rangie sailed through its MOT, I went for a wee drive with the dog, just aimlessly driving up and down wee country roads.

Paintwork on the dolly is looking good Trig, have you had a go at the chrome too?

I'm in two minds whether to cut back and polish the paint on the Daimler, as I quite like the flat shabby look (white being more forgiving than your black).  The paint is very thin in places so might just leave it as is.

Trig, as everyone else. Look for leaks or re bleed the system. Check levels/ joints etc. I used powertrack Ltd for the seals on the marina cylinder (assume it's the same or similar) super service and pedal on mine spot on.

The only other thing to check is the flexi hoses. If these have collapsed internally they may not be bleeding properly and causing the fluid to slowly pass.

I didn't risk it on the marina as they looked like the originals and I've put new on that one.

Good luck - doing a grand job with your fleet.

Took the Honda in this morning and I have obviously pissed them off as I usually get a brand new courtesy car, this time I've been given an 05 'Fit'.... it's actually really nice to drive!

They just rang and said the Insight is all done (£180, not bad at all!) but I can't be arsed to fight the traffic yet again so I'm keeping it overnight (with permission), wonder what mischief I can get up to in a 'Fit'?

Stupid fucking name for a car, never heard of one before.

Posted

I don't even know what make a Fit is.  Is it just a short Fiat?

Posted

Oh, I wondered what t was. Nice little car to be fair, auto, pas, air con etc. 65000 miles and feels as fresh as a daisy.

I've just been adding up how much I am likely to be spending in the next few days on cars (three of) and it's a frightening figure! Of course, once SCSW get their hands on the big green thing, my estimate could increase by a factor I don't even want to consider!

But, I like things to be 'right'. I can't see the point in running around in something that leaves you wanting 'more' so getting it right from the word go, is always my way. It does sadden me though that a few short years ago, I would have done all of this myself and enjoyed every minute. I love spraying/bodywork/making new panels and stitching them in, mechanical stuff I find boring but easy enough (even a Bentley is only a car when alls said and done) and sometimes (like working on old 'S' class Mercs) can be really satisfying. I never thought the day would come when even something like doing disc pads or changing plugs was beyond me. But, that day has come! I could still do it, but it would take me days and the car would be out of action for the duration. The thought of jacking it up or trying to undo a wheel bolt just fills me with dread. I literally cannot exert enough pressure to undo a tight nut.

So now I am in the hands of others. Not ideal by a long stretch but I guess for the minute, I have the cash to do it, so get it done!

Well i looked at the weather and thought it'd be a nice day for cleaning the car and I realised I haven't given my saph the protection of hard wax since its been painted, i then realised I don't have any... Bugger, so I popped to a local place which didn't really have a big range of products so I got myself some of this to try

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Simoniz-SIM0010A-150g-Simoniz-Original-Carnauba-Wax-/252074043131?nav=SEARCH

It's great for a cheap wax, not too difficult to work with and gives a good lustre, i started by washing it with simoniz carnauba wash and wax and polished it using Farecla wax top, then finished off with the hard wax

Oh very shiny Pervyford!, I done what you said Panhard and the brakes all feel normal to me, the pedal dropped slightly when i started the car and was nice and firm but when i drove it home the other week it dropped after a few miles?. I'll take it for a road test tomorrow and see if it does it again and i'll check for leaks.

I've took some photos today of it so I'll update my thread, hold fire...

Tam, our shed must be a barn. This scared the shit out of me tonight when it almost flew into my face.

Many years ago one of the mechanics I worked with had brake trouble with a Princess. After changing the master cylinder and hoses it turned out to be a wheel bearing pushing the pads back in when driving.

Audi a2 bought! Very clean, getting it next week.

I'm well up for hearing more about this.

In my quest to find a big wafty diesel auto barge, A2s came up on Autotrader. Yeah, I reckon my search criteria need a bit of work.

Anyway, I clicked onto a 1.6 FSI Sport and it seemed to have decent economy with the benefit of not being a complex diesel, it had retro Quattro-style stripey seats, and it'll fit into a parking space which my Astra bloody well doesn't. Also, cheaps.

Stuck at the parent's place with a car which needs push starting and lacks a functioning clutch.

They are dead set against the whole "shite" thing, in Dad's words "You need £3k to buy a good car. Cheap cars are cheap for a reason". Words have been said, Scotland is crap for cheap cars that aren't rotten and at this rate I'm going to end up back on finance...

It's grim times for sure.

Pop down South, cheap day saver on the train and pick up a solid 15 year old motor for £500-£700 and drive it back?

Volvo / Toyota / Honda etc etc

Epic collection thread and no sign up to a finance deal??

A decent 1.8i 8v Mk3 Cavalier is all the car any man could need and they won't break the bank. TBH I don't hold with the "ALL SCTSCH CARS R ROTN" thing 'cos the most rotten cars I've had came from south of the border.
