These did have trouble with the servo pumps rattling away. I can't remember exactly what it sounded like as it was about 10 years ago my sister had one go

Aye, I removed the piston from the brake servo pump and it still rattled like a bastard.

Ten MoT passes in a row. Also worth noting that from April this year, the MoT "Tax Discs" are no longer issued here in Northern Ireland. You just get a certificate.

See, it exists! It belongs to the same chap with the Orion i posted the other day, His brother bought it back in 1994 with plans to sell the number plate for loads of money, The chap i know was kindly given the job of getting a mot on it but that's as far as it got, It had a plate welded to the passenger floor, it got driven into the barn and sat there since.

He now needs to get shot of it, it's a 1 previous owner who was a plumber in Clacton, some of there gear is still in the back, it's done 41000 miles but hasn't ran for at least 12 years. There's a new exhaust inside, the front wing is rust along the rear edge and there's a hole in the rear wheel arch. He's told me they are after £400 for it, Is that about right or too much?. I haven't a clue?

It still has it's dealer plates and sticker.

I'm also probably having this. It was parked in the barn in 2006 after they didn't need it anymore, 105k on the clock, It's actually quite tidy other than one scabby rear arch and both rears of the sills probably need patching.

It started and ran quite nicely but it will need 4 tyres and a good service and the handbrake doesn't work, The radio is in the glovebox. I've been offered it for £250 and he'll deliver it to my dads in the price if i want it, the box along is worth £200 so It's probably worth the gamble.

That's what I'm thinking, and i can't weld which I'm sure it will need plenty off, £400 isn't a lot of money though in the great scheme of things, What's it worth witha  mot, £1200?.

I forgot to say, this also lives in the corner of the lock up, I can't remember what it's called, a ceetrak or something from 1946, it would have been in camouflage colours and was used for towing aircrafts up and down the runways. It's sat in that corner at least 25 years now.

A change of subject quickly, This could be a daft question but I've never done this sort of stuff before.

This is the outlet end of the fuel pipe from my pump on the Mk1, I've changed the pump and now is leaking, I'm guessing that the olive is crushed and needs replacing, The trouble is I'm struggle to find a new olive and nut, the pipe is 5mm which works out as 5/16 in old money.

post-3625-0-54714600-1433027491_thumb.jpg

Now I've found this set up on ebay, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-16-Petrol-Pipe-Nut-x-20-UNF-Carburettor-Fuel-Pump-petrol-Tank-With-1-Olive-/150858578541?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item231fdf3a6dwhich i think is right, can anyone confirm please?. Also how do i fit the olive, does it need to be soldered on to the pipe, if so how do i do that? or can it be crushed on when i do the nut up?

Cheers.

Worked on or should I say more accurately under the Plymouth today. The gearbox was leaking fluid and making a mess on the underside of the car and on the Torqueflites (both 904 and 727) it's usually the shift shaft seal that's gone. I'd changed one before and was terrified when I started that as auto boxes are all a bit of a mystery to me. Experience is a great teacher and this one went smoothly. Dropped the pan and the valve body, removed the old seal. Using a 15/16" socket, 4" bolt and some large washers the new seal was in place in a matter of minutes. Cleaned up the valve body, reinstalled easy peasy. New gasket for the transmission sump and she's all back together.

Other odd jobs included; reinstalling the missing radio delete panel, installing the passenger door handle, lubricating the window winder mechanisms.

Looks like a crush olive. Just do it up (careful now) and it should crush down on the pipe.

A bodge method to get you out of the shit is to wrap a couple of turns of PTFE tape fully around the crushed on but leaking olive then carefully stuff pipe back in and do up. Not a permanent fix but would see you right for a while.

Edit: I just realised its a olive onto a steel pipe. Sometimes they can be a bastard to seal/crush straight to get a leak free seal. Sometimes if you've a spare fitting (unlikely, I know) it's sometimes better to crush the olive nice and straight on the spare fitting, say in a vice, before fitting. (Sorry for the surplus of sometimes - I'm no writer)

A few people have said about PTFE tape but I was under the impression that petrol would make it go like jelly and clog up the pipe work? Cheers for that, my dad said I had to solder it up but the old one isn't soldered so I did wonder if it just crushes together.

Posted

Olives are designed to be crushed, Trig. That's how they work on domestic plumbing, for example. Indeed, that's how they form a seal. Back in the old days, when I wasn't senile, my Uncle and I used to use Aeroquip hoses all over rallycross car's brake systems. Crush olives have a higher "Burst pressure". Soldering it on won't seal it. However, if you're going to nip it up to a 50 year old carburetter, you might break something.

Sorry, that's probably not a lot of help.

The trick with PTFE is, is to just use enough to cover the olive and not get anywhere near the bore of the pipe. That way it does the sealing without interfering with fuel flow.

SauceDoctor, you are completely right. On plumbing, however, the copper pipe "gives" a little under the crushing of the olive, somehow helping and contributing the sealing process. Steel pipes don't crush and solely rely on the olive to do the sealing.

Trig get that van bought for that price, also that sierra is a bargain so get that as well

Trigger.

first - the ital is a bargain and even if all you do is buy it clean it up and sell it straight on I'd be surprised if you don't get into 4 figures. Any commercial is worth good money. If you're not interested I could pass the word around.

Regards the cortina fuel pump. Where is the pipe that fastens on the end?

They had 2 set ups, one was a solid pipe right the way up to the carb and the other was I rigid plastic pipe fastened to the ends you show.

personally I'd forget about a diy attempt to this. I've had this issue loads of times as same set up as anglia. Check that the fuel pump is not split. Many times the pipe gets overtigtend and the pump splits. Other than that just a wrap of ptfe will do. Done it loads of times.

Or try and find a used pipe. (I might have one but will need to rummage) I want the ital :-) lol

Well, what happened is the old pump was a bit weak and whilst at an autojumble last weekend i found an original AC Delco glass pump for £1, Whilst trying it on (and finding it didn't work) i refitted the old one and this join started leaking so i nipped it a bit more and cracked the casing on the old pump instead. :(.

Lesson learned there, meanwhile i bought a rebuild kit for this glass pump and fitted it.

but now the outlet join weeps when it runs, I've ordered that olive and nut set above and will fit that once it's here, hopefully that will cure it. As for the pipe it's a rubber one which we've fitted (The old rubber one was perished) with a couple of fuel filters in.

Trig...that fuel pipe looks like a barrel olive rather than an ordinary one. If the pipe nut goes right up to the part you are screwing it into chances are it won't seal......

Question

You are out starting to wash the car all the gear is out.You have started then the heaven's open it starts to piss down. Do you

Continue as you have started it's only a bit of rain it WILL clear looking at the sky hopefully.

Run leaving the car soaped up the rain will wash it of i'll come back to it later.

Hose off what you have done getting wet and put every thing away wetting wet,i'll come back to it later.

It is still raining over an hour later all the gear is still on the drive but the soap has washed off.

LOL

Apparently the Bini's brake warning light has been extinguished and none of us are quite sure how it happened.

Also, here's a Civic with Bini wheels:

Turns out the original wheels were 5.5J as well as the Bini ones, so they've gone on. They look ok, there's something Rover-y about them

I suggested a 56000 mile £650 Rover 618 to him as an alternative - BRG with beige leather.

He turned it down :shock::-(

I've agreed to buy the Sierra for £250, delivered. The Ital might take a little longer as the seller is quipping about the "valuable" number plate now.

Does a weber 32/36 fit a CVH Sierra without much modification? The old Pierburg one currently fitted is temperamental and was one of the reasons it got parked up.

For the second weekend on the trot, I have been in a field with piss-poor mobile coverage. I have much to catch up on right here on Autoshite.

It was the 2CVGB National. People let me drive their cars. This one was possibly most awesome-est. 100bhp BMW power. YEEEE-HAAAAA!

This yellow Ami 6 was possiby the most beautifulest.

It was bloody great. I had a fabulous time. Not that I've forgotten that I'll be spending yet another weekend in a field very soon. I'm well fired up about that too. I think the XM needs a rest though, so I'm definitely gunning for some Nippa action on Friday.

Buy van for £400, get it legal, give plate to old owner to fail to sell it, sell/run van with the original plate?

The plates "A41 SHK" which is it's original number, it would be shame for it to go for the sake of a few hundred pounds.
