I've fancied one of these for a while [...] once I've splashed some love over it

I didn't realise you meant "fancied" in that way...

Car on the road is worth two in the shed.

This is very, very true.

IMO a car on the road is worth ten in the shed.

We all need to get to work etc.

I have never seen the point in prolonged storage of cars, that are nowhere near roadworthy.

Two's the right number for me.

A nicely equipped daily, for work and an older toy, to tinker with and enjoy over the finer months.

Agreed, unless you have plenty of space and time. I was up to 7 cars at one point which was just stupid given the lack of funds, time and skill I was able to donate to them.

Just dropped The Wentworth off for an MOT:

At best, it will pass with a couple of advisories, at worst it will fail due to a tiny patch of corrosion on the nearside door sill (resulting I think from a badly-executed accident repair when the car was much younger). I hope for the best.

EDIT (1500): The car passed with only a few minor advisories. Even the sill passed muster :-D

The problem I have is that the grey Sigmund Cox 740 is actually much less rusty and a much nicer driving car than the 940. It also still has 9 months MOT on it. The Council Estate was waiting on a spare couple of hundred quid which got spent on wankee candles or a carpet sweeper or some other crap for the house. Think HG repair quotations are in order, with a bill on the dinner table instead of actual dinner.

That always* works.

Dipped beam has stopped working on the 18 this morning, had to continue my journey to work with main beams like an arsehole. This has happened before but they eventually start working again. I've cleaned up the connections on the fuse board and the earth connections on the body but it didn't make much difference. I'm thinking it's either the stalk or the relay, I have spares of both so here's hoping.

It comes at a bad time too, the 340's mot runs out tomorrow and I don't have any wheels for the polo.

Can't you make one good one out of the two ? Borrow an engine crane and it shouldn't take more than a weekend to swap engines round. If the rest of the SVM attend to help, you can probably do it in a single day !

Most importantly, it will be free. Unless you decide to treat the car to a fresh cambelt, oil and coolant, in which case it will cost an eye-watering* £40.

May be of use to other R3 owners, as "TADT,S" apparently.

Fingers crossed, I've found how the water is getting into the boot of the 25. It seems that it gets in under the spoiler, goes inside the cavity of the tailgate, runs down inside the rubber wiring tube near the hinge, into the rear quarterpanel and then leaks out the seam, drowning the back light clusters. No fuckin wonder I couldn't find it - it was just appearing from the inside of the seam in the C post. I'm going to RTV round the holes when the touch up paint dries and bung the spoiler back on with new patchlock bolts.

Thanks to the Approved Used Lancia Loan Scheme plus a random purchase from another shiter, the one-car fleet is tripling in size this month, just in time for my parking at home to drop from 2 to 1 spaces.  Whoops.

Code reader tool arrived today. Plugged it into SWMBO's  no go - no sparks Subaru.

No error codes past or present.?   Now what?

Press "clear" anyway.

Car now works normally.  Why?

I feel a car / marriage discussion looming.

ECUs sometimes get muddled up, it seems. I've heard of people resetting "no codes", and the result was the same as yours, notably a 320d that was only going on 3 cylinders.

Docu Programme on BBC2 tonight 9pm where 2 car salesman trade places. A Top end salesman sells shite and the shiter tries selling top end stuff, might be interesting.

Well its not on ITV, so it stands half a chance...

Potential shitwreck avoided, fitted the stalk I took off the old petrol 18 and they work fine now.

There was a bit of an issue before switching between main beams and dipped beams, sometimes the headlights would go off entirely, but wiggling the stalk would bring them back.

These stalks feel much tighter and notchier so I'm also pleased about that.

Crank and cam sensors playing up can cause random non start issues without producing codes.

I had a bit of a play in the garage earlier mocking up a slightly longer MX5 PPF...

I'll make some steel plates to bolt it together with a bit better tomorrow and then I can get the local awesome old dude welder to weld it up for me... all in the name of research, obviously...

Some W124 Mercedes mats were delivered today, finally! Except they are the wrong colour, they are Beige. I knew this when I bought them as they are second-hand jobbies but they were actually cheap enough for me to afford as all other are £80+, plus they are genuine 'ribbed' jobbies. They'll do for now until I can find a set of rear mats in Grey.

I went for a drive in the 2CV. It was fun and both things worked. Hmmm.

I'm now officially a messer. After a day and a half of moping around and trying to gain enthusiasm for a replacement shitter I realised I just couldn't do it. I couldn't part with the Allegro. It means so much to me, it's like part of my identity, and I'll never find anything else like it. I explained my predicament to the buyer who was an unbelievable gent about it, although clearly gutted, and I refunded his deposit plus recompense for the wasted efforts and fuel. He didnt ask, it just made me feel better about screwing him about. Today the Allegro's been into a mates bodyshop for assessment. He's used to working on more swanky stuff and therefore does a first rate job and he seems positive about how solid it appears. I'll have to wait about 3 months and source some arch panels etc, but by the summer the body should be fully restored with a fresh coat of paint. Properly excited.

I think you've made the right decision, it's a cracking little car and ready didn't look as bad as you made it sound in the photos.

I look forwards to seeing the bodywork photos!

Good call. We all have things we regret losing, so it's good to know you still have yours.

It's that same mindset that has me plotting how I can rescue my 2CV. It simply has to happen. I've been through too much with that car!

And also why I can't part with my R4., Its too much a part of me now and I can't really see me not owning it.

Pleased to hear you're keeping it Alex

I say again: muscle, assistance, tea supplies and verbal bollocks are but a phone call away...

Brother-in-law, as expected, lost his license through totting up. 6 month ban and £205 fine.

FPB7 came to visit and to collect lots of BX bits. Barrett - an indicator stalk was in the stash. If I wasn't 12 miles from a Post Office, I might have sent it to you myself. Andy's changes to the BX are working well. Looks ace on the alloys. Gains Lacquer Peel approval for running on veg too. Hmmm. Chips.

Suzuki MOT day tomorrow.

I'm not expecting a pass, this being a bit of a fishing trip to see what I'm up against.

The main problem I can see is a soft patch on the n/s sill.  Depending on which forum you look at, this may or may not be considered structural.
