They must have been built out of Russian salt containers. The ones I've seen advertised seem to have gone from fine to totally hollowed out between mot times.

I had a mark 4 Escort like that. From AOK, to needing £550 of welding. In 1994!

I had a look under the bonnet of the Rover this evening, and sure enough the intercooler-to-inlet-manifold hose has a BFO 3" split in it.  That'll be where all the boost is going then.

Replacement pipes seem to retail at around £40 new (or £28 for a second hand one from an eBay scrappy :? ), so I might have a bash at repairing the split.  Current plan is to use some of that funky glue you get with split CV boots to glue the split shut, then some bicycle tyre repair patches over the top, then lots of that self-amalgamating pipe repair tape.  Total cost will be £0 as I already have all that stuff, so no biggie if it fails.  To be honest I wouldn't mind paying 40 quid to get the car back on song, but 40 quid for a bit of rubber pipe is a rip off imho.

Have a look for aftermarket silicon boost hoses - often cheaper than standard ones.

Also, if one is split, there may be others about to split elsewhere....oily fumes tend to soften the rubber over the years.

Have loaned out the C'eed to my landlady so she can get to London today as last night her 150k 2004 Focus TDCi put its EML on.  Rather gruff RAC man came out and it was quite interesting to see their diagnostic kit in action, which produced two faults, one of which was an issue with the turbo.  Apparently it could mean a duff sensor or it could mean the turbo is within seconds of imploding, won't know until the local garage have had time to look at it in more detail.  I hope it's something simple and quick not least because now I need a car for the weekend to get to Wales!  Would certainly be cheaper in the diesel Focus.

The RAC diagnostic kit is not the best. I misfueled a 206 diesel a couple of years ago and when it broke down called them out. As the EML light was on I thought don't mention the mis fuel and get towed home. Their piece of junk code reader couldn't clear the fault or even get any codes out of it. When I got it home it came up with fuel pump failiure which would of been good enough to of got me towed home

The AA couldn;t get their machine to read bugger all on on my 2002 3 series BMW even though it had OBDII and all that. If it had done I think the code  would have been 0000MG  - Exploded.

Well it seemed to read it quite readily, produced two fault codes with explanations but obviously won't know if they're right until it's been to the garage.  I suppose one benefit of having a Focus is that if anything is going to work, it should work on one of those.

Apparently this particular car has a recent history of putting the EML on, garages say there's no fault found, then it dies abruptly in the outside lane of a motorway/middle of a busy city so she's understandably not keen to drive it anywhere until it's sorted, plus the RAC chap did say not to drive it in case the turbo really is knackered.

I did - a full silicone boost hose set is £165

Hammer a water pipe over the top of it?

Apparently it helps if it's smaller?

Could you wrap it in a shitload of loom bands? Cheap and an attractive addition to any engine bay*

To celebrate its new handbraking capabilities the 405 has decided today to give me a golden (rust) shower every time we go over a big bump (which living on a farm track is a lot)

A quick poke reveals the windscreen surround to be made up of silicon sealant and rust ... with less strength than dried weetabix.

Another thing to ignore for now

That's exactly my issue with diagnostics - is it a duff sensor or a duff part? Without the sensors you've a better idea of what "feels" wrong.

Another day, another motor. This will be for sale soon (like tomorrow or Saturday) as I now officially have no money and an expensive wife, who's birthday falls one week today.

It's a 1.5 pez and seems to go like excrement off a tool for digging, lifting, and moving bulk materials, such as soil, coal, gravel, snow, sand, or ore.

Something's not right.

It's Japanese, clean, shiny and looks really nice, almost - dare I say it - desirable.

Who are you and where is the knackered Corsa?

Joking aside, that does look nice, one of the best-looking hatchbacks of the 90s, albeit minus the popup headlights the older ones had.

I really like that model of 323. I used to get to drive one when I worked in the mill years ago and used to love ragging it up and down from Edinburgh. .

They do go really well for a 1.5 although I had the closest near death driving experience I ever had driving one.

And would sir like to relive that experience for just* three hundred and fifty pounds?

Has anyone seen or heard anything of MrDuke?  He is noticeable by his absence of late.

I fitted the fancy exhaust to my 106 gti and aside from having to do most of the job laying in 4" of fast flowing gutter water, it went ok until I drove off and found it was clouting a heatshield all the time. I poked my head under and it looks like someone has told Harvey Price there was a battered sausage hidden behind them, some rough twat has just bent them all over to change the handbrake cable. I brayed the shit out of them with a hammer for a few minutes but I couldn't get much of a swing at it. I'll just cut the fuckers off in the morning if I can find where I left the angle grinder.

The 416 passed its MoT today, no advisories either which I'm chuffed at. I've now given it to my Dad as he's been using it for the past few months anyway and is more than happy with it. Am glad I can give the folks something for a change as it's usually me asking them for a favour.

,

The 220 keeps on going although it was running a bit rough the other day, I'm hoping a motorway blast should sort that as it's only done short trips recently.

I'm also wondering (again) whether to sell the Metro seeing as I hardly use it and it's costing me 50 quid a month in storage. I collected it from the lockup today and after four months of no use it started up no problem and ran perfect on the way home, it really is a piece of piss to own and run which is a big reason why I've kept it this long.

That 323 looks very nice, that will do someone a good turn.

Good news about the MOT Rob, always a smug feeling that.

Has any one got a front wing for a Merc estate barge?

Reason being is I done this:

One minute the gate I was turning in was clear-the next some bastard had put in a cast Iron gate post!

The local repair shop is trying to rob me of £600 notes. Told them to go forth and multiply!

Does this add to the shiteness of the beast or is it just a bag of shite?!
