Second night in rural new home. Without internet (most of the time) and without TV until next week. But the good thing is: Not glt grilled by now! ;-)

You know how it starts. I'll just take the seat out to nip up this little hole in the floor then before you know it.

Getting there but have a few square feet to glue back in. I spent all after noon burning off sticky underseal. Not very nice.

Just had a look at Google Streetview for my road, and they've replaced the old 6-year-old photos with some new, erm, 3-year-old ones.  So I now have a Skoda Estelle in my driveway instead of a Humber Hawk.  Must have been during a low ebb in my shite ownership, as there's no cars on the road outside, and only two on the car park (900 T16S and diesel Punto).

Yeah, they did that with mine last year. I went from having the White '87 Sterling to having the G-reg '90 Sterling, the images were by then at change at least 2 years old.

Just seen off 3 of my daughters , who have left in the ex-AngryDicky Dad's Rover 600 for Brittany.

They sometimes get lost going to the local shops and get confused as to if a kilometre is longer or shorter than a mile. The fact they are in an old Rover that only escaped the bridge by a couple of days and cost less than the return Dover- Calais tickets seems the most positive part of the scenario.

My little one (18) had her first proper driving lesson yesterday (in a Corsa!) and managed a short drive, too. I'd get her insured with me on the Punto, but the premium will be a telephone numbers job.

Found the problem with the only-working-when-it-feels-like-it n/s/r indicator, the bulb holder is knackered so might have a bike ride to the scrappy today for a replacement, if they have one.

Not quite as fraught but it made me feel old when my 2 sons, 16 and 18 at the time, got into an old 525 BMW with 250k on it to drive 300 miles return trip on motorways a few years back for the first time. Guess my work here is done then. Eldest was due to make me a Grandad yesterday but late again it seems...

When my gf was Learning to drive her insurance on her micra was fairly cheap. I think it was because she would always be accompanied.

This

When my daughter was learning in her 106 the insurance was only around 6-700

Once she passed her test and out on her own it shot up to 1300ish for the 1st yr

I might give it a try on the insurance quote front and see what happens, cheers.

Got some more of the Punto tailgate dent out before using an idea I've been thinking about for ages: shoved a 26" mountain bike tube into the dented bit, then used my boost pack thing tyre inflator to pump it up. It didn't half go with a bang when it (tube) eventually blew out and I was worried it might be enough to shatter the glass, but luckily it was ok. It's far from perfect but definitely got some of the crease out and I reckon it's a trick I can use again on this car. A motorbike or car inner rube would probably be a bit better, but's it's a learning curve and all that.

*Edit: I also jet washed the Kangoo. Inside.

Fitted a new battery to The Volvo this evening, which allowed me to start and run it for a while and drive it backwards and forwards a bit. I really must get around to preparing it for an MOT at some point in the near future, as it's been off the road since June 20th, when the old one ran out...

Rover 600 and holidaying offspring news; they're there!

Rover performed faultlessly ,as expected, daughters only took one wrong turning- came off on M11 heading into London because Sat-Nav was set to avoid tolls and was taking them through Blackwall tunnel instead of Dartford crossing- my fault! But don't tell them.

Good stuff. I'm rather envious of their 'Rovering abroad' trip! I'm driving to Telford tomorrow. Not quite so glamorous.

Have they fixed the M54 yet or is it still 50 for miles?

Posted

Still 50 for ages thanks to JLR building the new roads for their fancy new engine plant

And the speed cameras ARE active. They have made a pretty penny with those.....almost enough to pay for the roadworks.............

"The M54 roadworks between Telford and Shrewsbury are just one problem facing motorists travelling from Shropshire to and from the West Midlands.

Further along the M54 at Staffordshire, more than 6,400 drivers have been caught breaking the 50mph speed limit, as work forges ahead to create a new slip road from the carriageway.

Average speed cameras are in operation around junction two of the motorway, where work is ongoing to create a slip road to the multi-million pound i54 business park development, which will also serve the new Jaguar Land Rover factory."

I took the Rover of Doom to the BL show at Peterborough today.  'Twas its first long run since getting home from Shitefest 2012.  It's rather frustrating to drive at the moment - top speed appears to be around 85 on the flat (an indicated 92), less with a headwind.  I did manage to overtake a few dawdlers, including a rather smoky Marina 1.3 Coupe on the way home, but there was no chance of just blatting past slower traffic like it used to.

It's booked in a week on Tuesday to have the decat pipe fitted (there's no fugging way I'm going to get the bolts undone myself - I was under the car with a blowtorch for about an hour yesterday afternoon and still none of them would shift), which touch wood should restore it back to health.  Whereupon I can refit the magic Roverron box, and maybe even get away with winding the boost up a bit given the less restrictive exhaust.  Can't wait!

I thought I saw the Rover of Doom!

I'm still feeling the sunburn from yesterday but have this week off so the yellow Allegro estate may have some more fettleing, the Rover Coupe's handbrake needs to be sorted and an MoT booked. Also a friend offered me a Rover 200 BRM at BL Day, no more cars but this is possibly a break to this rule.

DVLA in quicker than expected shocker.

Tax disc and MOT arrived this morning. Plates now fitted and I've been hooning around like a low powered hooligan all morning.

Great stuff. A long time coming eh Pete? Trials and tribulations but must be fun to get a proper hoon on at last.

I've driven about 170 miles in the Rover today. It's odd. It feels about as fast as a brick. It makes a lot of noise, but feels really slow. Then you look at the speedo and you're doing 70. It's the first sub-10-sec-60-mph-dash car I've owned for ages, yet it feels very slow. I love being able to just jam it in fifth and leave it there though. It'll pull from 35mph in top. It feels crap for overtaking as it doesn't feel very responsive though. So I mainly just sat back and took it easy. A bit more comfort wouldn't go amiss but it'll do.

I'm not sure which model it was, but a very nice yellow fiat (the ones the skoda was based on - 128?) passed me this morning on the way into work. Made up for the idiot in the Peugeot estate who didn't tick the indicator box on the accessory list.
