I find it very similar to your description, It drives nicely, but it doesn't feel particularly fast, I had a mk3 Astra Sport with the 1.8 16v in and that went like the clappers, this doesn't feel the same, but it has a stupid stainless exhaust on it so I don't think that's helping, it gets a bit weak after about 5K... Plus I don't think its ever had a decent thrash in its life! I don't think hopping in it straight from the 330 has helped my views though... it's certainly much better than the 1200 Corsa! :)

So as not to break the rules in the one picture per post thread I thought I would stick this here:

Zoinks, I've started discussion with the SD1's previous owner about him maybe buying it back. He's interested the question is am I ready to let it go and how much?

I'm going to see that cortina this afternoon, which may sway my opinion one way or another.

Haha... They've started to ask for ID for all spray paints, which is a total pain in the arse seeing as I've lost my driving license and have to take my bleedin passport to the model shop.

Picked these bits up walking around the ind. estate where I work. Have springs suddenly got more fragile?

I don't remember anyone breaking coil springs back in the day

I guess it's due to the state of our roads at the moment, coupled that with low profile tyres and stiff suspensions that are fitted to many cars, I had one break on my Mondeo ST and my dad's girlfriends daughter had one snap the other day on her 57 plate Fiesta as she putted of the drive, My brother in law also had one snap in December on his 56 plate Fiesta that went through his front tyre in the middle of London, that was a expensive fix!

Looks like someone's been busy with the junior hacksaw.......

Coil springs break all the time, I've seen loads of cars in for MOT at my local garage that needed new springs fitted.

What surprises me though is how many people don't notice they've got a broken spring until they take the car in for the test.

This has happened to the choke cable on the GT6.

I think its new choke cable time (although this is not that old) as I cannot see how I can reattach this? However admit, I might be missing something obvious.

OEM cables were soldered i think. my stag one was.

cheap nasty copies are barely crimped.

get yourself down to halfords and get a £2.99 universal bike brake cable. drill a hold in the knob snigger, flux and tin the cable, obviously it still needs to be able to fit into the end of the knob chortle. Insert cable right into the knob fnarr and then heat it gently. should stick like shit to a blanket.

Just back from Malaysia trip and was hoping to have plenty of pics of old chod to post. Sadly nothing stood out really! Mostly modern ish Protons and Japanese stuff. I haz failed.

Hired a Perodua Myvi (?) for a week whilst we were there and was mildly impressed though. Very well specced for a small car! Never heard of them before but seemed fairly well screwed together and had all the toys.

Petrol is cheap. Around 40 pence a litre. Nice!

Thanks for that, I will give it a go. The other cable is still there, I assume I will just need to feed it back through and attach it to the knob somehow.

Saying that a new one is a £13 but could well go the same way as this one.

Original V40 rear springs tended to lose half a loop which nobody would notice till MOT time, replacements were somewhat better. As ever with poor components, it's a cheapest supplier wins the contract issue.

I was told that the reason that springs are breaking more often is down to the tree huggers.

Years ago the steel for springs was tempered in oil to allow uniform quenching . Now the have to be quenched in water due to green issues and oil vapour etc in the factories.

Because water boils at a lower temp it has little air pockets around the metal and this leads to weak/ poorly heat treated areas.

Now this may be tosh but its what the Lesjofors rep told me

Makes sense to me. A pal of mine has made his own moto tyre levers from old springs as they are strong as, he used the oil temper technique when shaping them too.

Surely this only counts in countries where they give a shit and so spring production would just move to places where they don't?

The basic mechanics of metal bashing are the same the world over and springs are fairy easy to make items.

I was told it's because springs are now made by cold forming, where the spring is wound cold, rather than being formed at high temperature, which leads to stresses in the metal and a far more brittle spring.

I've never, ever had a spring break on any of the chod I have owned in the last 23 years. mind. I've never owned anything newer than a 52 plate so maybe its only the modern stuff made differently. my pal martin has a 58 plate mondeo that's had two go on it.

I fully expect, having said that, to go out to the volvo tomorrow and find a broken spring.

Given the state of the roads currently, I wouldn't be surprised if broken springs are on the increase,

In other news, I had a (Very) brief shot in a 2002 Daihatsu Terios that my other half's father is purchasing. Although brief, I can confirm that they are quite jolly in a sort of small bouncy 4x4 kind of way and that at 130k+ nothing had fallen off. It was a bit rusty here and there mind you.
I quite fancy one now. Dammit...

gone up backwards?

No I don't think it would, plus there wasn't enough to space to turn round and try. So I was sent along the track to some more level parking - but at the end of the party, when we were trying to leave, the bloody thing still dug holes in the ground. Cue putting bits of cardboard under the wheels, and eventually having to go back inside to recruit half a dozen blokes to help me push.

Looking around at everyone's cars, they were virtually all much lighter than mine, and fwd, except for those with 4x4s which obviously were fine. I reckon I took the wrong car because of the five in my fleet I'm pretty sure that any of the other four would have trundled into the parking field with no bother at all.

My dad used to swear by it when the snow got bad on the hill into Sedgley many, many moons ago. He had a mk3 cortina at the time and I remember sitting in the back scooting up the hill backwards much to the confusion of all the FWD drivers. He did carry the odd paving slab or two too.

They are decent. My mate Len downsized from a Ford ranger but still wanted a 4x4 for the winter and got a Terios. He loves it. not bad on fuel and still quite capable in slippery situations. watch for rot on the boot floor they all seem to go there.

My Golf sold over the weekend - I got £790 for it, also the person who has made the purchase made prompt contact and seems all round decent.  This was a surprise, and whilst it's a bit less than I wanted, it's probably what a gold / beige / brown golf cabriolet is worth with a slightly misbehaving carburetor.  Coming to collect Friday, so I hope all goes well.

Non car related, I managed to sell my old flat which I'd been renting out for £5 more than the mortgage per month and paying for numerous repairs, this should free up some money to spend on cars / woodburners.  Plus I've sold it to another landlord so the tenant can continue on undisturbed, which I'm pleased about.

Which is very timely as I've noticed the ugly welding in the boot of the saab appears to be splitting quite dramatically along the seams surrounding the turret.  Seems the Acadiane will have to take over daily duties, although that was smelling petrolly this morning, so a bit of a once over might be a good idea.

The modern went off for some warranty work, one of the problems didn't happen for the service guys (the roof was failing to raise above halfway, which is embarrassing when trying to quickly put up the roof at traffic lights) however they lubed and cleaned up the whole mechanism and fixed the squeaky brakes, plus a free valet and they picked it up and dropped it off within 3 hours.  I'm not normally used to this level of competence from a main dealer.

I've also remembered that I've only got a 4 day week.  This pleases me!
