Picked up a perfectly functional Rover P6 BW65 gearbox from Blackpool today.

Will soon be V8 motoring again, which is good, since I have severe withdrawal symptoms.

A fellow 'shitter visited Fraud towers earlier today and drove the 740 away !!!

I'm very disappointed and can certainly say that this place isn't what it used to be... No hilarious TXT SPK offers, nobody offering a barn find Kreidler Florett in exchange, just a remarkably hassle-free transaction ! Unacceptable* !!!

Indeed, with the Sierra gone prematurely, I need a big estate still for my impending trip up to Wellingborough where I will be relaying some parts for some shiters as well as picking up some shit for myself.

Solid and scruffy as expected, nothing too bad on the to-do list.

Pez station shot:

Drove back, decided to visit the parents on the way to give it a bit of a wash. Just as I got onto the A2 the rev counter started flickering between 0 and 4000rpm...

Shortly after, the indicators and fuel gauge packed up, radio turned itself off and it started misfiring so I had to stick it in '3' to keep it going...

It then cut out on a roundabout and there was seemingly no power to the starter (although the radio and windows etc still worked). Managed to get a jump start, it fired straight away but stopped immediately when I moved the indicator switch.

Jumped it again, and it's been fine since! stopped and started 4 or 5 times since then and driven for another 1.5hrs or so. Odd, still it seems to have fixed itself.

Anyway, gave it a quick wipe over

The pics are quite flattering there, the bonnet and roof look like this:

The interior seems to have hardly any wear considering it's on about 240k (the odometer packed up at 225k)

I'm pleased with it overall, it's LOUD as the exhaust is knackered but the relevant bit to repair it is in the enormous boot. Will get that done ASAP.

Most things work except the heated seats and one window, might fix that but it's a rear one anyway, probably won't bother with the seats.

Only other thing I've noticed is the steering's a bit grumbly at full lock. Hopefully that's not an expensive issue.

So cheers Dr F! Was a pleasant transaction.

Well I took the COOK PASS BASTARD Sterling out last night. When I got to Dorridge I noticed the temp gauge went up, not quite to half way but very near. When I got back into Birmingham I noticed the collant had got very low. I filled it up with some water and coolant mix. Then today I did the same.

After dropping Ma off I parked up at a shopping centre and left it for 20 mins, when I came back I noticed a handful of water had been dripping underneath the drivers side where the lower pipe runs from the expansion tank.

I've got another 14 days with it so I shan't bother getting it repaired. If the hole gets bigger and it spews out coolant then it'll have to go into storage earlier.

This electric fault business is very, very strange. Especially as it's never happened before ! As I said, a bit of WD40 around the ignition module wouldn't do it any harm.

Regarding the power steering noise at full lock, I've always thought it was due to the pump straining. It's not the first car I've owned that does this, so I never considered it to be a fault ?

Niggles aside, I'm happy that you like the old beast and I hope it behaves as well during your ownership as it did during mine !

I also had a tat collection mission today, mine was down to Somerset to collect an A40 Somerset which I then drove back to Essex!

Pleased to report that unlike Gary's Volvo, it made the 180 mile trip without incident. The previous owner had done a lot of work to make it more usable, including new brakes all round, a complete rewire, radial tyres and a 1489cc B Series engine out of a Wolseley 1500 which means it can actually keep up with modern traffic.

Here's the petrol station shot with dad's trusty £400 600.

Hey, Garycox. My 16v 940 did exactly the same as wot your 740 did and it turned out it was the crank sensor. Those things cause all sorts of random faults.

AD glad to hear you got back fine in the new acquisition!

What sort of shape is the Somerset in? Nice to see its still got its original reg as these seem to be prime candidates for losing them!

That's about the one achiles heel of  the volvo 740..the electrics don't last like the rest of the car.  Non-functioning bits and pieces is par for the course, although I've never had one cut out like yours did.  aside from that they are great cars.

My day hasn't been quite as exciting as you lot, all I've managed to achieve to running a bead of silicon mastic around the sunroof in hope that it stops this water drip, the sunroof was rubbish anyway so it's no great loose to seal it up, I just hope it fixes it!.

Thanks! It's not bad, but does look worse in real life. The paintwork is very tired and really shows its age, but that's a good thing for me as I don't like restored cars. It's got loads of character, and it doesn't matter so much about leaving it outside or in car parks etc.

Funny you mention the reg, it's an Essex reg so local to me. So I've just collected a Somerset with an Essex reg from Somerset and returned it to Essex! (Although I will hopefully be driving it down to University in Kent tomorrow morning).

Well done Gary, Volvos are the vehicle of WINNARS. Electrical nonsense is, unfortunately, a 700/900 thing and TADTS.

Witnessed an accident this morning that was so small its hardly worth mentioning, one bloke pulls out of a junction without looking both ways and another bloke just manages to apply the brakes and scrub off most of his speed before he hits the other cars bumper, both blokes get out, look at each others damage (of which there was very little) shake hands and drive off, this surprised me considering its monday morning, blowing a gale and pissing with rain

Getting the electrons to flow in the desired direction at the correct time is a full time pursuit in an old Volvo.

I've had mine 3 weeks and have already had issues with the fuel gauge (which almost never works in a 20 year old Volvo), electric windows, brake lights, dim-dip headlights, central locking, and the indicators.
It's mostly down to the crappy fuse box and when the rain stops I'll take them all out and give all the connectors a good clean up and replace all the fuses.

Will do, I don't suppose it will take too long to find out at the moment.

Just struck up a mega-deal with a nice man from the 80's. 3.1 Essex V6 with a mild cam and two sets of heads for 150 notes, champion.

Just bought a wooden dashboard kit for TV2 from eBay for £35:

Should make for a interesting half hour or so when I attempt to fit it, especially with regard to the bit that goes around the radio and heater controls, which looks like it will need major dismantlement to install. Has anyone here ever fitted such a kit to a 70 Series Volvo?

Drove the Somerset down to Canterbury this morning, with no problems. Then was the problem of finding somewhere to park it. I don't have a parking permit in this car as I don't want to pay for another one, and the Maestro is still in the garage. Annoyingly, I couldn't find any free spaces nearby as they were full of students cars so had to park about a mile away from my digs, in a tiny space between a BMW and an Audi. It was funny though, looking back at the row of cars and seeing this bulbous black thing towering over all the others.

Spent a moderately enjoyable weekend - well, some of it, in my garage with The Shed, attempting to find one of the sources of the water leak into the cabin.

I discovered that the little plastic tray thing that sits under the wipers had come off on the drivers side, so, using nothing but cunning, superglue and a nail i fixed it!

I then put the dehumidifier on the front seat, folded forward the rear seat squab and put a little heater thingy on the floor. The results were GR9; got a couple of pints of damp out of the car, and the instruments don't constantly glow.

While the interior was drying out, i decided to start cleaning under the bonnet, check the oil, clean and polish and basically get a bit Vulgalour on it's ass. Packed all my chemicals, rags, and nerdy paraphinalia away, started her up, went for a quick blat. Lovely.

3 hours later, realise that I've run out of Tesco's diet cola, and my supply of fags and crisps wouldn't last the first quarter of the Superbowl, so off I went to the shop.

Except I didn't.

Bastard twatting ungrateful pseudo Spanish bag of rotten paella wouldn't start, and then flattened it's battery.

Fucksocks.

See what you did there was fix a problem while making no provisions for the problem that would appear in its place.  You shouldn't be surprised, it's the First Law of Shite in Motion.
