i dont know what you look like dollywobbler but im guessing its either the couple who were jogging past in the background at 1.15 or the bearded chap with the hat and his ladyfriend right at the end of the clip

I have met DW, and can confirm he is not a jogger :-)

Anyone know how to fix a leaky sunroof?

My renault 18 has a sunroof, which the previous owner reckons was an aftermarket thing.

Even if it was factory the chances of finding a sunroof seal are nil, like most other things.

How can I stop it from leaking, as far as I can see there are no sunroof drain holes, I've discovered that liquid electrical tape could maybe help, has anyone used that before for this purpose?

Those tilt-only sunroofs can be a nightmare. There usually aren't any drain tubes, which is part of the problem. Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure may help, and is a bit more attractive than gaffer tape. It does stain paintwork though.

I used to get issues with these a lot. If it is a tilt type aftermarket one- take the glass out completely, clean and treat the seal with vaseline or silicone, and then bend the mounting clips at the front of the glass slightly to tighten the seal. If it's the frame that is leaking, peel back the headlining and slacken all the screws a bit, fill the gaps with sikkaflex or similar and tighten down. Can you post a pic/ makers name + type?

I usually seek cars without sunroofs due to my hatred of them. Hard to explain the massive webasto on the jag then, nor can I use one as an excuse for corrosion in the floor/ sills of the pug 504 as it hasnt got a sunroof!

I'm glad this has came up as I'm having the same issue with my tilt sunroof in the Aclaim, that's a Tudor Wabasto unit and it drips.

I bought a length of rubber seal of eBay but the roof wouldn't shut with it fitted, someone else recommend vasaline, i'm going to try that next.

I managed to finish off painting the wheels on the Civic today, I had a major problem last night when I tried to get the car of the axle stands and found that my ageing jack had decided not to lift the car any more, a quick visit to Wilcos during my lunch break today though sourced me another cheap trolley jack.

They aren't 100% perfect but they look miles better than they did, before they were rusty and let the car down, now i need to buy some new tyres as the one's fitted are years old, I've found a receipt for the 2 rear tyres, both Firestones, they were bought in 1984! The cars done 27000 miles since then so are due a change i think!.

Usually you can adjust or bend the tongues at the front of the glass which raise or lower the glass height. Even a plastic washer as a spacer can make all the difference. A little talc on the rubber then close it and you can see that it's being clamped evenly. Firstly though you need to find out if the glass or the frame is leaking- if it's the frame it usually just needs tightened. I fitted hundreds of these things before the days of Air Con.

Station posted a great fix up here a while back, found on an MR2 forum to fix the removable t-top glass. It involved applying silicone to the rubbers then covering the silicone with cling film before putting the glass back on, so when the silicone has set, you can remove the cling film and you're not left with any crappy residue on the glass. I've done a similar fix/bodge with the seals on the sliding doors of our cheap-ass Hiace camper, applying the silicone directly along the insides of the doors, along the tops. It doesn't look that impressive but you'd have to look to find the bodge with them being sliding doors. Plus, it stops us getting a wet bed at night!

Well I'm safely back from Ipswich.  I can confirm that the Ipswich to Felixstowe "train" is utterly shite.

As previously mentioned, the purpose of my trip was to pick up my new turbocharged Swede, following a number of recent discussions about such things on these hallowed pages.

So here it is, on a petrol station forecourt as tradition demands (although it's by the airline rather than a pump - the tyres were looking a bit low when I picked it up).

A3008_zpsb66c3486.jpg

It's a 2001 S60 T5.  It's actually not what I was really looking for - I was after either an 850 T5 or an S40 T4, but this cropped up at what looked like a decent price, so I had a punt and won it.

It's in pretty good nick for its age as far as I can see (haven't seen it in daylight yet...).  It's done 170K but the service book is fully stamped, and it seems in good health (touch wood).  I'd not driven a "modern" Volvo before (an S80 T6 has been on my want list for a while, but they rarely come up cheap), but I wasn't disappointed - it's still very much a Volvo in the 850 idiom, with a slow clunky gearchange and meaty-feeling but quite low-geared steering.  The ride is a bit odd - it's firm over bumps and doesn't roll much, but it does pitch a bit on bumpy surfaces.  I think it's probably quite a nose-heavy beast.

It pulls well too.  The road conditions at the moment aren't ideal for unleashing an overpowered FWD beast, but I did get the chance to nail it in 3rd on one of the dual carriageway stretches of the A140, and I can confirm that it picks up speed quite impressively once the turbo spools up.  There is a fair bit of lag though - but then I'm used to Saab turbos so that wasn't a surprise.  One thing I was slightly disappointed about is that the 5-cylinder warble is rather more muted than in an 850.

It's got all the gadgets I could want too - leather seats (manual rather than electric, but I prefer that), climate, cruise, trip computer and a decent stereo.  I think it'll make a brilliant long-distance car - it's quite high-geared (70mph in 5th is about 2,000rpm) so that should keep the fuel consumption down on a long run, but it has more than enough power to piss off Audi drivers on the motorway if need be.  Tax is fugging expensive though - same as the RX8 in fact.

Oh, and I also did a spottage, on the walk between Derby Road station and the seller's house.  Excuse the crap picture - my phone isn't the best at night shots.

These are gr17.5 value for money.

Is it s proper T5 one rather than the TS? The TS still has a 180 bhp but the T5 is like 250bhp or something so it should be properly rapid.

Does this mean you're going to put that 406 out of its misery?

Yep, it's a proper T5, and as far as I've been able to tell so far it's pretty darn rapid.

I'm not sure what to do with the 406 yet.  Having bought the Volvo I'm now skint until I can sell something (either the Saab or the Mazda), so if the filter doesn't cure the Pug then I'll either bridge it straight away or shove it somewhere until I decide what to do with it.  The annoying thing is that apart from the running problems it fits my requirements for a daily to a tee.

I've seen that SC100 about for the last few years now, it's a pretty cool little thing and you can't knock that single carriage Ippy to Felixstowe train, i only paid £2.60 return when i went out on the beer in Felixstowe the other week!

Volvo looks great Wuvz. I've really warmed to these since I first saw them as company cars at a factory I worked at a few years ago. I drove the Diesel version of an S70 and I didn't really warm to it, but I do like my Dad's V40 Diesel strangely enough.

Cheers for all the tips about the sunroof, if my carb kit comes today I'll be out at the car so will get some pics.

Nisfan has put some gaffer tape on but its still dripping a bit.

I don't even mind if the sunroof is permanently sealed down as it's not something I would use anyway.

The boot seal is also leaking I think, so going to try one of these universal boot seals and see if that helps, as again there's no chance of finding an 18 boot seal.

Posted

Or tape the boot down too.

That would work better than on the sunroof... Until I wanted to open it.

Posted

Sure you could find somewhere else to keep the gaffer tape no?

Posted

Could stick it over the gearstick in a sort of funfair hoop throwing affair perhaps!

Had a dash to the office in Sheffield yesterday, as I slowed down to come off the M1 the 205 started making a noise like a Guinea Pig was being tortured somewhere under the bonnet. Happened more on the overrun and quietened off when accelerating. I immediately thought that a wheel bearing had had it. but on investigation I think that the centre support bearing on the driveshaft has worn out. Spent a few hours in the office and they set off back rather gingerly. All quiet... Until I hit a sustained 70mph when I could hear the whirring building up again. Buy the time I got back to Leeds the Guinea Pig was back on the rack.

I have got a new pair of driveshafts to go on, but the thought of messing about replacing them in this weather doesn't appeal. Sadly my tame mechanic is now off work with a torn bicep.

I'll just not drive it on the motorway until I can be arsed to fix it

Provided it's not raining the cold is okay once you get into the swing of it.

I had been putting off changing the polo's headgasket for ages but just thought fuck it, once I started even though it was freezing and drizzly, it wasn't too bad.

I was supposed to go and look at a Nissan Bluebird in East London tomorrow. £375 on bumtree with 10 months MoT, looked a bargain. Is now up for 500 with the same seller but location, Bradford. WTF? All this in the space of three days. The £300 Cavalier sold within 24 hours so won't be seeing that either!

OOH, you're mental using secondhand tyres. What if they have been in an accident. What if they have been exposed to radiation and are 50 years old. What about the children.

"Honest John mode off."

"Autoshite Mode On"

Nice one. Well bought sir!
