DING!

The boy gets a cigar.

Having four cars now, I find storage of them is increasingly difficult. My nice 4 door A35 I was particularly worried about. The main problem is that where the car has been kept is in a drive-thru and I'm always starting it up to move it out so we can move other cars in and out and also it's getting scratched and scraped from people squeezing past it. I then had a brainwave, and asked my grandparents if I could store it in their garage a few miles away. It works well for me as I won't be using it much over the next few years and really don't want to sell it, so I'll just keep it serviced, give it the occasional run out and connect the trickle charger to keep the battery topped up when it's not in use.

So, for the last two weeks I've been tidying up "my" new garage to keep 'Nobby' in. It was full of junk and has never had a car in to my knowledge as my grandad worked for Ford and always had new company cars parked on the driveway. It's a good size and nice and cosy for my little car :)

Nice one AD. I only wish car storage was as easy for me. Pretty everyone in my immidiate family (here in England) don't have a garage, most don't even have a driveway.

Hah, thought so, a poorly turned out Mk6 is a prime candidate for instant scrap fodder given their low values and rust problems.  So spill the beans then, how bad is it?

Side note: I don't smoke so could I trade the cigar for, oh, say, a Honda motorbike? 8)

So I spent a few hours over my dads today to make a start on my new Civic.

As I mangaed to get it taxed today I decided to take it for a road test, it started and drove brilliantly but the clutch is high and the brakes were shocking, After stripping them down, freeing the front calipers and bleeding them (they were full of air and the rear brakes had loads of shit in the fluid) they feeled much better.

The engine bay was looking a bit manky with nearly 40 years of oil under it so i fired up my new pressure washer and bottle of TFR and got to work.

Much better I think you'll agree!

As after that I decided to fit my tax into the original tax disc holder that still works.

and fitted my new number plates and a old AA badge I had in the shed, what do you think?.

It's an Escort Mk6 (or possibly 7, or whatever) so it's effing rubbish by default. I haven't seen it (well, not for about 6 months) and all I know is 'something on the clutch seems noisy but it's been doing that for years' and that's about it.

Trig, you are one lucky man, that car is a little smasher.

The release bearing will be chewing through the fingers. Best course of action for one of those Escorts is to have it delivered directly to the crusher.

That, I think, will be it's fate. Though I will of course try and palm it off to someone first.

Trig, that Civic is an absolute beauty.  I R JELLUS (again).

Since I lost my shite storage a couple of months ago, the Innocenti has been stood in a field across the road from (and rented by the owner of) the garage where I get most of my repairs done.  It had to be dragged up there on a transporter as, having stood for 6 months with no more than the occasional shunting back and forth to get other cars in / out, it didn't take kindly to being asked to actually drive again and refused to run.  I got a call in the week from the garage saying that they'd lost the use of the field so the Innocenti was going to have to come back to mine.  I asked them to have a play with it and see if they could get it running so I could drive it home rather than paying them to transport it and then having it sat there as a non-runner until I got time to look at it.

After some pissing about they got it going again (the carb was full of gunk) and I drove it home yesterday.  I'd forgotten how much fun the little thing is to drive - it has no power (makes the diesel AX seem like a dragster) but it's so light and precise and the 3-pot engine makes a great noise (especially with the fugging great hole in the exhaust, which I'm going to have a bash at patching up tomorrow).  Then I really need to start making a proper effort to find a new headlight so I can get the thing MoT'd and back (legally) on the road where it belongs.  Then I can start worrying about the more minor things it needs, like the fact that the passenger door skin is starting to come adrift at the bottom :-? .

+1. Those numberplates are absolutely perfect and well worth the premium over flat plastic ones.

Et voila. Not mine yet but will be soon, and handily enough it's literally round the corner from the metal yard. The noise sounds like it's the front of the exhaust rattling somewhere.

Flight or Finesse? If it wasn't an entirely borked one I'd be tempted to get one as my old dear fuggin loves them and our motability car is due off lease and won't be replaced.

Rear arch on one side is shit (skim of filler required) rattle from cat area of exhaust, no MOT and probably scabby here and there. My mate Scottish Bob had it for about 3 or 4 years, it replaced an older Mk6 Escort and has been replaced by a newer Mk6 Escort.

I can buy the remaining 5 .5 months tax for £100 extra but hadn't planned to. If you want what will be a very cheap car (i.e scrap price) let me know. I hate the f*ck*ng things with a passion, but if you can save it that's cool.

That looks sweeeeeeeet Barrett sir. If I had a Herald I would get the other bonnet and switch them over every few weeks to make unsuspecting people think I had 2 different cars.

That really is a treat, Barrett. Looks quite sort of aggressive almost with those wheels on too, they really suit it I reckon.

I wonder if it's worth stashing away somewhere for a few years, until 1990s nostalgia gets into full swing? ;)

Would the bonnet off the Bond fit?

I'm not too sure if the Polonez t-shirt will be a huge seller but I'll be wearing mine lots :)

Been out and about in the Hezza today, up to Forest Row for an old car meet to meet some friends. Got back and managed to coax the Maestro into life, which I then forced Gary to drive back into Brighton and dump in a free parking street to quietly wait for it's tax to expire or whatever. Anyone wanna buy a Maestro?
