Friends of my parents lost their brand new Toyota in it.

Was theirs burnt out or is it one of the undamaged ones that are stuck in there?

Definitely get some pics up. I'd love it but I have no idea where I'd store it as I have other projects I need to finish first and have no storage free. Not sure how I'd solve that one. :?

Pics would be nice, but I suspect the cost of fetching it will be a problem, but I can try manmaths....

Had a chance encounter with Matt Richardson from Kelsey Publishing at work today. He wanted to use the hardstanding/trailer park at the back of our site in order to do a modified Focus-related photoshoot for Fast Ford magazine. Sadly, due to circumstances beyond my control, such as an ongoing police investigation on site (!), I was unable to assist him, but we had a nice chat about - amongst other things - The Volvo, Cortina Crusaders, Rover P6s, Rover Tomcats, Dollywobbler's former Rover 45, and modified E-Type Jags. Pretty cool  8)

Dollywobbler: do you have an email address for Matt (I gather that you are a pal of his), and also for the legendary Peter Simpson? I'd like to keep in contact with the former and inform the latter that I still own The Volvo, 15 years after he sold it to me via eBay ^^

News today from the boss of a downturn in workload and restructuring, meaning that I may be out of a job come the end of January...

The Dolly just lost its bottom end and I'm stranded in Lockerbie.

Fuck.

Managed to limp the car along back roads at 25mph to just outside Gretna before the engine utterly lunched itself. The story as to why I had to is long.

Got a hotel.

Car will be recovered in time needless to say the engine is unsalvageable after driving 30 miles with missing bearings... Anybody selling a triumph 1300 motor?

Having killed a couple of engines similarly (oh no, here comes granddad with one of his "when I was your age" stories)

Wolseley 16/60: Had a bit of an oil leak and occasionally* ran it too low. (When it sounded a bit clattery, add moar oil) I had a 70 mile trip to Edinburgh to make, so headed over route one (A82/M8) and by the time I got to Baillieston Interchange the abused B-series was sounding a bit* clattery, but I had to press on, so up goes the volume* on the Pye cassette player. By the time I got to Edinburgh it's a massive din, but I do what I need to do and after I head back, but this time sticking to A roads back and go via Stirling.

Got as far as just outside Balfron before the motor went bang big time. Coasted to a halt and did a lot of walking and managed to get a late bus at half-fare (that's the level of cash I had in my pocket and got myself to Buchanan St Bus Station before having to hang around and avoid the desirable clientele there and phoning home. Got a lift back the next day and got towed 25 miles back home on the end of a rope. No 3. big-end had let go and completely trashed the journal and the bang was the cap going, leaving the rod jammed in between the block and camshaft. Despite sourcing and half-sorting a Marina B-series to pop in, it never happened and I sold it on.

The second time was a low-pressure (it's fucked) warning light came on when driving a Reliant Kitten on it's seventh 400 mile trip north to Scotland from High Wycombe. The light first flickered passing Banbury at lowish speed, but I could keep it extinguished if I kept the speed over 30. 30 became 40 and 40 became 50. By the time I was passing Larkhall, it had to be doing over 70 to stay out, but I hadn't too far to go. The aim was to make the last 35 miles to enable me not to spunk a full-recovery trip back down South. Unfortunately the motor died near the Easterhouse junction on the M8, so I called the AA. 15 minutes of waiting around on the embankment and I receive a phone call from a friend taking the piss. Asking how he knew, a friend of his happened to be driving the opposite way and called him to tell him that he'd spotted my brown Kitten Estate and me in my sheepskin standing near it. Small world. Anyway, with the car broken in the wrong place I called time on it and sold it to some bloke who scrapped the body and built a Tempest out of it - so it lived on, but having just looked it up, it has been on SORN the last ten years. I got back down South by distress-purchasing a rather smokey petrol Pug 405 from a mate. Really didn't like that car. It was rubbish.

Sorry to read this Captain. Are you being recovered at the same time as the car, or going back for it?

Chodspeed.

That's a bit shit. Fingers crossed.

This could be an option if you can get it there:

http://ramp-it-up.co.uk/angus/

50quid per day without tools or 90quid per day with tools isn't cheap cheap. But still far cheaper than a garage. With a ramp I reckon you could get it done in a day no problem.

The real problem is where you can find an affordable engine that isn't shagged or a big unknown. You'll have to put a call out on the Dolomite forum.

Rover V8 time? :)

sorry to hear the engine lunched it self, did it run dry of oil?

Dislike. Saying that an engine swap on one of these can't be that hard, can it? assuming you can find an engine.

I think Captain has a spare Dolly/Dolly engine stashed somewhere from other posts in the past?

Posted

He's got a 1850 that is being/needs restoring. I don't think it's an easy or straight swap to do.

Posted

Sorry to hear of your troubles Captain. I definitely feel bad for you what with you being so persistent keeping your old Triumphs going.

Lost a bit end bearing going down the motorway on my way back from an Aussie Floyd gig. Ended up on the grass twixt the lanes and a slip road.

Police escorted me backwards up the sliproad and I limped a mile to Lockerbie.

Naturally I had no recovery and my phone had 10% charge. My mate who'd gone to the gig with me was staying with his parents near Carlisle but they'd all had a drink by this point so couldn't drive. A rapid call to hotels/taxi companies by all parties was fruitless as it was midnight and everywhere was closed.

I then joined the RAC to be informed AFTER I'd paid that they'd not recover the car for 24 hours.

It was now freezing so I decided to try and drive to my mate's parents place in Longtown along back roads.

A mile outside Gretna the rythmic knocking of the increasing fucked crank (top speed 30mph, no oil pressure) was replaced by many, many out of time sounds which heralded the end of the engine's life.

I then started pushing the car until an uphill stretch forced me to shove the car off the road.

I ventured to a nearby house and the hippie stoner fella who lived there was an absolute legend who made me a cup of tea and lent me a phone charger (down to 2% charge).

He worked as a chef at a local hotel and managed to blag me a room.

This morning my mate came to pick me up and we'll head back to Glasgow this eve. The car will be recovered at some point.

As far as engine swaps go I can't be fucked so another 1300 lump will be going in because bolt on, yo.

I do have a spare 1850 motor but it is 200 miles away and would require load of mods to fit Inc a subframe, diff etc.

Jesus, that sounds like a fucking nightmare.

I'm fully committed to the budgetless 1970s shit car lifestyle.

Me and 17-Coffees have used that place a couple of times. It's absolutely brilliant! Lovely people who run it too, they provide you with copious amounts of tea, biscuits and chat. The stock of tools is huge, and it's just really nice to work in a sheltered, heated space with a proper lift for a change. The folk who run it even wander around asking how you're doing, ask if you need a hand etc. A few times we had the guy who runs it (forgot his name) giving us tips and pointers, and even getting stuck in helping us.

If Captain_70s does go there, I'd be willing to get myself there to lend a hand / pass the wrong spanners.

They started out with one in Bristol, then opened the Angus one. Unfortunately the Bristol one closed down before I got a chance to go. :(
