Thankfully not all the motoring encounters on my journey have been horrible. Here's the good one. This Hispano rumbled past me in a small Surrey village this afternoon and parked outside the church to pick someone up

I hope she was appreciative. The owner told me it took him 30 years to restore this fine automobile; note cork on mascot so as not to spear the odd bridesmade.post-7547-0-12414000-1541272507_thumb.jpg

That big white not-a-Morgan looks like it has an MX-5 stuck in the middle of it, which is what I assume it's based on.  It's not the worst thing of its type to look at, though that is perhaps a bit like saying it's not the smelliest turd you could have stepped in.

Took the CX out to put some petrol in it. The gearbox appeared to behave itself. This might be because the debris inside it didn't get agitated enough to block the channels and filter....

I think its trying to be an XK 120 - and failing.

My missus' Jazz has a very loud engine all of a sudden - sounds like the exhaust back box has fallen off but it hasn't - and a nice smell of petrol on start up from cold. What could it be...?

While I'm spamming the news thread, also found this, an old photo from the 60's of my dad and his mates, I mocked it up into a 60's album cover a few years ago. Can anyone ID the vehicles?

Someone was talking to me a year or two ago about acquiring a Nissan Sunny ZX and I can't remember who it was.  Maybe it was someone on here?  If it was you, or if anyone is interested in acquiring a Sunny ZX can you give me a nudge, please.

finally home from the wilds of Devon and collecting this, Kerrys dream motorbike. and almost the same as one in a framed print on the wall at home that she has has since whenever.

Kerry's new toy. A 1990 Soft tail custom imported from Florida last year. 15,500 miles and a bit scruffy in places. some surface rust on the headstock, and also on the swing arm, plus the chrome is tired in spots, and there are some chips in the paint. but the bike hasn't been messed with, apart from the mufflers it is as it left the factory in march 1990.

needs tires and some TLC, but cannot complain given what she has paid for it. which is about half what a minty mint one would have been.

but is a nice honest motorcycle.

plan is i think to use, enjoy and generally improve it.

and out mount for the 700+ mile round trip? an 18 plate transit van.

impressions? flimsy and horribly cheap in places, switch gear really crap, visability good, it rides well even with a load in the back, and the crap looking seats are actually not bad. the headlamps are woefully inadaquate, gearchange epecially into 6th is crap and the brakes are unbelivably keen. but sadly its no match for a mark 3 transit with the 2.5 Di engine. that was the peak of the Transit van......

Why is it called a soft tail?  Is that just a trim designation?  Is there a hard tail?

Posted

it is called a soft tail cos there is suspension on the back axel. it is sorta placed horizontally up under the back of seat.

a hard tail is a chopper style motorcycle that doesn't have any suspension on the back (hence it been a hard tail), which as Kerry had one of them (based on a kawasaki, back in the day) makes them such fun* to ride on anything other than a perfect road.

Posted

Buttons on the seat look good, but are a pain when it rains.

Does she ride in the rain?

I tried to dodge it, but it always rained on the way back.

Posted

Kerry is very much a fair weather biker. and even then she doen't go very far at all by

given how we had such an amazing summer, i understand that the Sportser 883, which Kerry already already has as in interesting garden feature owns and very, very occasionally rides has covered 150 whole miles on the road this year.

she doesn't ride in the rain, or the sun, or the wind, or in any weather at all......

Got a handwritten letter in the post today with the stamp being a Ford Anglia. Turns out my old crashed XJ40 found its way to Motorhog and the new owner had written to me asking if I had any documents or a spare key to give to him. I asked whether he was going to try and fix it and he said yes. I then told him all the quirks about it and said I hope Motorhog didn’t overcharge you since the residual insurance value was about £150. He then said he paid £810 for it. Just to reiterate that is £810 for a 4.0 XJ40 with no MOT, insurance write off and with the rear end caved in, not to mention a cracked exhaust manifold. Truly incrediblez.

Fuck me and I thought the little muntjacks I see poking out of the hedge in the dark on my way home scare the shit out of me! Fuck moose!

Basically what I hit in my Panda I think - small deer.

Well the Y10 drove the 60 miles home with no problems.  Which isn't bad going for a 28-year-old Lancia that has basically been stood for the last couple of years.  There are a few electrical gubbins which don't work, but the only one which is really a major issue is the heater blower (which I think is seized as when the engine is idling the revs dip noticeably when it's switched on).  There's actually a reasonable amount of heat comes through once on the move, but it's not going to be a lot of good for keeping it demisted in traffic.  The blower is under the bonnet and easy to get to, but I don't know how hard they are to get hold of - are they the same as an Uno?

The description of the car also mentioned the fuel injection needing TLC, but apart from a slightly high and slightly spluttery idle there doesn't seem to be too much wrong with it - even the spluttering feels more like it needs a set of plugs than anything else.  The brakes are a bit soft, but my previous Y10s were the same so I think it's a case of TADT,S - the car stops well enough anyway.  It goes pretty well - I definitely wasn't* racing my mate in his (formerly my) MG BGT back along the A47 and the Lancia actually had the edge on acceleration.  It's also fairly sensibly geared for an '80s small car - 70 is about 3,200rpm which is quite manageable.  The speedo is dead on accurate too, weirdly.  Electric windows and central locking work (although the locking doesn't seem to do the tailgate).  Temperature sits steady at or very slightly above the half way mark; oil pressure gauge reads a bit low but the light goes out straight away and the engine is pretty quiet so I'm not too worried about that.  It's had an oil change recently and I'm wondering whether whoever did it has used some dreadful modern synthetic oil (it seems pretty thin) - they've overfilled it a bit as well so I'm probably going to drain it and pour in some decent quality mineral 15w40.

It's tested until next June so will hopefully keep me going for a while.  Apart from an oil change and a heater blower, the other odd bits it needs can be done as and when.  It stands me at £470 including commission which I don't think is too bad really - it's certainly more immediately useable than my last ACA purchase.  Paying for the car was a slightly odd experience as I was served by a 12 year old boy (assume he's the son of one of the owners) - he was very polite and efficient and knew what he was doing but it was still strange handing my debit card over to a small child.  I assume they were paying him for his efforts...

I'd like to end by apologising to the (now former) resident of the front bumper, who has moved out in disgust now that his erstwhile home has become mobile again.

I wasn't far from your neck of the woods earlier this year (on the bridge off the B430 to join the A34 southbound) when I almost squashed one of these creatures in the pitch black.   It was just standing on the bridge in the middle of the road....Luckily I saw its eyes!

I stopped about two yards short of it but it didn't fuck off - just stood there gawping.   As there was nobody else about I got out, hoping to prod it up the arse and get it running.  Then I saw why it was waiting - it had a fawn waiting in the weeds for its turn to cross the road.

It was about the size of a chihuahua - it would have had no chance!

I'll have to do a full fleet update but I have another new arrival.

With the W203 out of action, I needed transport to tide me over while I rebuild the top end.

Wifey has a Roomster 1 which is ridiculously basic but we love it. They rarely come up for sale so when a Roomster 3 (the one with all the toys) appeared locally for cheaps I had to lift it. Driveway a bit bunged now!

It's got a flipping glass roof and everything!

Both are 1.4 tdi, the wee 3 cylinder PD lump. I like how they sound and they aren't as underpowered as you'd think.

I'll sort the Merc and then either sell it or the BASE Roomster, but that'll be ages away.

I've already noticed a big drop in my fuel bill so the wee Roomster might win over the thirsty oul merc

PS I only parked like a wanker for an hour or so, I stuck it out on the road once a neighbour's guest had left - they all seem to like parking outside our house FFS
