Yesterday evening I went along to see my friend in his white GT6 at Turweston Airfield checkpoint during the Triumph Round Britain Reliably Run.

They had some fun with a Ex-Met 2500 while I was there.

It's ok the PT Cruiser owner had a Vitesse and wants another!

Try not to adjust the actuator. Although most cars have a little closed loop learning for the flow rate.

IIRC. The way a vacuum one is set, was to give it a particular vacuum negative pressure and then adjust the clevis adjuster to give a particular back pressure at a set flow rate.

Then it does a full sweep and checks the back pressure at 3 different actuator vacuum settings.

In development they just set it with deeper gauges and no pressure, which is very crude.

Obviously later ones have de lect'trick actuators.

Luckily I have got diagnostic kit that allowed me to run the boost pressure test. Didn't adjust the actuator rod, there was no need to but having the diagnostic as a back up is useful.

Took oppertunity that needed a new battery for fozzie, £80.99 petrol or £90.99 for diesel one, minus promotional code, price paid £53.42, bargain i say

Whilst at the garage tinkering with the Volvo (still broken, cause unknown) I thought I should try and find where the clonking noise is coming from on the 205. My shopping list isn't too bad, drop link, ball-joint/wishbone and a CV boot kit, that should hopefully reduce the noises the car makes.

That reassuring Mercedes kwalitee...

It was an Autoglass quality problem, not a Mercedes one!

I'm back finally. That was a long old drive, 4.5 hours at 50-55mph, reducing to 30 on some hills with a throttle pedal that felt like operating a heavy clutch.

Its a rough old beast but I'm very happy with it.

Need to sort out the throttle linkage and some leaf spring bushes as well as the obvious welding. And stop exhaust fumes getting in, it got a bit stinky with the windows shut.

Pics.

First time I've seen it in years. Yes, it is a traveller site.

It was made to stare it's replacement in the face and feel inadequate in the length and girth department.

What's that? Shonky camper vans are in fashion? Good job I just spotted this then.

Was that to a prebooked mot or is it exempted as a showmans?

Yes, I wonder who that could be.....?

It was to a pre-booked MOT. I decided not to present it as the windscreen washers weren't working. And stuff.

I'm dangerously close to buying a Skoda Favorit. Only one car is a realistic candidate to get rid of, and it's the only comfortable distance car on the fleet. Am I mad?

Getting rid of the Invacar after all that work?!

Yes I know you don't mean that one. ;)

I’ve been out of the game a bit over the last few months. (Bloody house refurbishment)

Consequently I’ve not bought a car since January, and this is bad! Lord knows I’ve tried (the less said about the base Mondeo the better) but hopefully this weekend will see something arrive. Just need to complete the usual ‘fun’ with the insurance company and we should be good to go!

I’ve never had one of this model, I’ve never had anything from this manufacturer and I’m probably about a foot and four stone too big for it. It might only be a brief tenure!

Sierra and 190 are now off the road for the winter, so the logical thing to do is to bring in something else.

The simple solution is to sack off the Nippa in exchange for the Favorit.  Then you can consider it an enormous power and space upgrade.  Mrs H might like the Favorit, too - it probably won't have power steering...

Mmmm.  Favorit.  Yes please.

Lay off the.. uhh...Rover? Oh... er.. ah. Mayybe not... Er, the Nippa... pls no. It favourite of mine. How about hibernating the Rover in that farm you had the Matiz stored! Yeah yeah sounds just fine to me.

I was about to say, you took the old battery out, placed it next to new one, then put it back in?

I can say that it is a surreal experience having someone else's vacuum cleaner - that you volunteered to pick up in the first place - temporarily living in the back of your car. Amongst years of accumulated horsehair, hay and straw. And probably some spiders as well, but I've only ever seen the occasional cobweb on the front passenger door, never the arachnids responsible.....

Applying a little bit of logic would say whichever of the two smoll cars is the more likely to be a PITA or harder to keep on the road.

Split plastic water-rail on the Connect leaking a litre or so in ten miles.

Glad I spotted this before replacing that thermostat housing. (Which is leaking, but not much)

Fingers crossed. Will be carrying a gallon can of water until the bodge has proved itself!

Thought you might be interested in my idea this weekend to refurbish the mirror on the 2cv as they were getting a bit sloppy. The job should have taken about 20 minutes. Here are my version of the instructions :  (NB - This is not a reflection of the quality of the part, just the dangers of poor tools, a car that hates you and being a bit of a pillock)

1  Remove mirror from car – 2 screws C5minutes (including getting screwdrivers out)
2 Remove glass and trim from mirror body  C1 minute
3 “Undo screw inside body” Find screw is jut a rusty blob with no discernable head.
4 Try to undo from mirror arm end. Destroy head on screw.
5 Get drill and try to drill inner head. Get cross. Slip 4 times causing large cuts to hands  C1 Hour

Next day.
6 Continue drilling. Decide to drill out rubber ball holding it together as the kit replaces this.
7 Find that rubber ball moves constantly and it is very hard to hold a 2cv mirror in a vice. C1hour
8 Eventually destroy rubber ball and pull arm from body. Expect bolt to come out of mirror arm.
9 Bolt does not come out of arm. Cut bolt with hacksaw.
10 Break hacksaw blade. Find another hacksaw.
11 Cut bolt. Expect bolt to come out of arm. Bolt does not come out of arm.
12 Gradually hammer bolt out of arm. C 1hour
13 “Hole in arm may require drilling to correct shape”. Drill using small drill bit to widen hole. Get to 90% of shape.
14 Break drill bit.
15 Find another drill bit, spend about 10 mins drilling then find that hole is harder that the drill and you have destroyed the drill bit.
16 Mirror Arm falls from vice. Grab arm.
17 Find that arm is very hot. Burn finger.
18 Go and treat burn.
19 Go to Homebase (Other shops are available) for a new drill bit.
20 Try again with new drill bit, successful this time. C 5 minutes (+half hour travel)
21 Gather new fittings, from safe place on bonnet of car (not the car I went to Homebase in!)
22 Find that grease has disappeared.
23 Find grease, C 5minutes
24 Assemble mirror with various new fittings
25 Drop mirror and all fittings all over floor.
26 Find all fittings C 5minutes
27 Drop mirror and fittings again.
28 Find all fittings except for one washer C10 minutes
29 Find that socket set is in the back of the Clio. Which is 70 miles away.
30 Find another socket set.
31 Loosely assemble mirror then go to car
32 Attach mirror to car
33 Realise that I have not fitted the new gasket between the mirror and the door
34 Take mirror off again
35 Fit gasket
36 Fit mirror body again
37 Find that have lost one of screws holding mirror arm to car.
38 Spend 5 minutes looking for screw. Do not find screw
39 Refit glass and trim c5 minutes.
40 Close door of garage and go to clean wounds.

There is a strange assumption that I'm somehow forcing the Nippa on Mrs DW, and she dreams of something more luxurious. I'm not sure why people think that.

I can confirm that she really does like it, because attempts to sneak the Skoda onto the fleet have gone down in a very lead balloon stylee. Oh well. Maybe I can make 2019 the year of the Favorit, though I also really want an Ami 6 saloon or a GSA as well.
