I’ve got two new cars to pick up this week as my girlfriends daughter wanted to get a sub grand Bini and so I’m off on a 300 mile round trip for this one.

It’s very low mileage at 54000 so hopefully the gearbox is ok and everything works.

Then on Thursday I’ve got to pick up the bargain £300 Jaaag for my father which I’m starting to wish I bought myself as it’s a lovely looking old bus that’s wanted for nothing.

So it’s a retro British car week for me.

was looking at better bulbs and not paying a fortune

Are the reflectors and lenses in good nick, and the present bulbs nice and clear?

Got a hankering for a Jaguar, a nice 308 would do very nicely indeed. Went to look at one yesterday, 'R' reg in  a nice spec and the guy said it was in 'Great condition' apart from a 'few bubbles' and they all have those. Got there at the allotted time and the bugger wasn't in! Had a look round the car and it was... hanging! Never seen a Jaguar with so many 'bubbles' - the front wing (drivers side) was rotten everywhere, sill had been repaired really badly, scrapes and scuffs all over the place.

I sent the guy a fairly snotty text along the lines of: 'thanks for wasting my time twat' though much more polite (cos I am a coward and allergic to getting thumped) so the search contines. Got to buy something before I buy another RR - I keep looking! :(

X308s are getting pretty common as cheaper old bangers these days, I'm sure you'll find something.

Good to see you back on here btw.

Just got my main first pension figure through, the distant hope of retiring next year has just galloped off further.

Yeah but they are fooked when cheap and you know me, I want MINT! Been bidding on an XJ-S V12 as well, asked the guy if I can go and have a look but he ain't answered me yet. I 'think' I'd prefer a saloon as they are comfier for an old cripple and 4 doors make it easier to get dogs in the back. I was considering flogging the Merc but I may hang onto it as I quite like it and now that I have discovered the gearbox is MUCH sweeter if left in sport mode (go figure?) .

No idea, bored, pissed off need something to cheer me the fuck up and woman are NOT the answer :)

I'd love a XJS too, but they are too expensive for me. Ideally I'd get a late 4.0 manual in BRG with a tan/beige interior.

Ooh!  Did you hear the Commer running?  A Knocker at full chat is a sound for sore ears.

Sadly not, it is a regular at the local Steam Rallies so I guess the owner just parked up and went to chat with some members of the local Traction Engine club who had a display nearby. There was some information and a diagram of the "Commer Knocker" in the windscreen though.

BMW developed an airlock in the cooling system this morning moving the temp guage to almost red. Had a pull over and let the engine cool. Managed to roll into work and get the RAC on the case. I work 30-odd miles from home so it was imperative I got the BMW diagnosed.

BMW finally got diagnosed with having nowt more than an airlock in the colling system. I could actually hear it 'gurgling' during the weekend. What was strange was that the RAC bloke said that the expansion tank was Ok. He'd pressure tested it and nothing came out of it. So where is all the water going then? He said it might going through steam in the exhaust which might suggest the very start of HGF. Anyone agree? There doesn't seem to be any steam escaping from the exhaust.

On my way home tonight I passed one of those electric cars up on the footway on the dual carriageway, in front was a VW van with a cable out of the back, it appeared to be giving it a roadside charge up. Never seen this before, is this a common thing or something new. I assume the van has some sort of generator/charger, but how quickly could it charge something up enough to move a few miles to a proper charging point?

Landed in Edinburgh after 400 miles and over 10 hours on the road, the M6 was a non-stop parade of rain, roadworks and accidents.

The Hiace has been mostly fine apart from its raging thirst which always occurs on a long motorway journey. It refused to restart at the campsite but I discovered the taped up immobiliser ring and chip under the dash had been disturbed by the horrific road surfaces I'd just driven over, so a quick fix.

Alas, before I go much further on it will have to have two new rear tyres. The Bridgestone Blizzaks I had fitted 2 years ago were bought part worn at the time, so unworn they still had the coloured lines on the tread but I think they're winter tyres, pretty sure they might have gone hard recently as they have absolutely no grip on damp roads, I've had a couple of scary roundabout exits today so they'll have to go.

Fortunately I've found a local tyre centre online who seem to have good pricing so will pay them a visit before I move on.

I'm pretty sure Bridgestone Blizzaks are winter tyres, you'll find the snowflake and mountain symbol on the sidewall somewhere if they are.

Probably a question for the stupid question amnesty, (and where did that thread go- or is that itself a stupid question?) but does an M+S sidewall marking mean its a winter tyre?

It's now called 'Ask a shitter'.

Marks and Spencer.

It's not just a tyre, it's a Marks & Spencer tyre.

M&S doesn't make much difference IMO, winter tyre with snowflake is the only proper winter tyre.

They are winter tyres, brilliant in the cold and reccomended by BMW.

Running then over the summer down there will likely tear them up, mine feel like jelly at 15 degrees.

Thanks chaps. They've not worn visibly at all in 10,000 miles but with no weight on the rear and the hard compound that's no surprise. I will see how the weather progresses, I don't want to throw them away but I have to admit they're not suitable for their current application, being rear wheel drive and permanently unladen won't be helping. I could get the brand new Falkens on the front swapped to the rear I guess, might be an improvement! I can't find a date code on the Bridgestone at all.

Due to storage problems I might have to sell one of my cars. With regret this would be the Allegro, a car I don't want to sell but might have to. If the worst comes I'll do a proper advert.

i'm hoping that it doesn't come to selling an allegro just yet, cos i'm skint....

fleet update time-

broke the Rovers clutch, well i didn't break it as such, coming home last thursday i come off the motorway and found that the pedal had gone as soft and flacid as a soft thing. the bite is now literally just above the floor, though weirdly the car still changes gear without a problem.

oh bother, it did get me to the FiL's though i did have to time getting about Hopgrove Roundabout cos i didn't want to push my luck with needing to change gear, and it was slipping like a sod while going up Whitwell hill.

so thats proper broke, i'm using Kerry's (until it breaks, when it'll become my) lexus. which just keeps on going (touch wood)

and the Rover? well its pretty worthless, but i like the car so i'm going to get it fixed. plus some other cheapo banger that i'd have to get to replace it could be even more trouble.

the orange mini and metro both continue to run without any problems, the tax is up on both at the end of the month, so i think i'm going to SORN one, other, or both of them.

and finally the little black mini, well, got the back wheel bearings done, and the new radiator fitted, but its running  like a bag o' crap. unless the choke is fully out, it'll just cough, splutter and grind to a halt. we are going to see a local old school mechanic to get the original spec manifild and exhaust fitted, i'm hoping that 'll make it run better, well i'm hoping it will.....

I used the Dacia today for the first time since Chodley last weekend and the battery was flat, I'll see if the battery I've just taken off the 405 is any better.   I'd been asked to cover the office at work for an hour so bump started it and headed into town getting there a little early and putting it straight up on the ramps so I could change the oil.  Unfortunately it requires a square key somewhere between 3/8" and 1/2" so its still on the ramps and a Transit is parked outside as I ended up working 4 1/2 hours so didn't get time to complete matters.

Must remember to take the square sump keys I bought years ago in tomorrow.
