Here you go. MOAR BEIGE:

They found a dealer demonstrator order somewhere to swap interiors with. You’d never know. They also gave me an extra discount for the hassle, which was decent.

Edit: oh and Rob, no I certainly didn't order a satanroof. How very dare you!

That looks nice, but does having a camera dangling 20' above the car not screw up the drag coefficient?

allegro and marauder were usually

in decending order:-

  • special
  • super
  • deluxe

Sounds about right - I had an Allegro Deluxe and it was basic as feck.

Went to Kings Lynn auction yesterday.  Once again I was terrified at the prices some cars are now making and how out of touch I am.  Case in point: this admittedly rather lovely early 900 T16S.  Guide price: £12,000 - £15,000.  No, I haven't typed too many zeros.  Twelve thousand to fifteen thousand pounds.  In my mind it's still worth about a fifth of that, tops.

More sensibly priced was this, the last Cavalier of EVAR, which could have been yours for under a grand, even with ACA's hefty commission added on.

I quite liked this 5hp Citroën - charming little thing, so basic that it didn't even have a speedo (ammeter was the only instrument), or a driver's door.  Decent lock on it for a '20s car though.

This 103-year-old Hudson was magnificent.  The engineering was something else - the gear shift was like a rifle bolt.  Bastard heavy steering mind.  Amazingly original - Junkman's "do not paint" mantra was made for this car.  [bonus photobomb by the bizarre 1980s Lea Francis.]

Not sure what these little taps were for on the cylinder head though?

And if that's too old fashioned for you, the dealership over the road would have been happy to sell you this magnificent* beast for just* 16 bags.

The trip to KL and back was done in the freshly MOT'd 205, which behaved magnificently and managed 130 fairly enthusiastically-driven miles on less than 15 quid of diesel.  I had a bash at the tracking on Friday evening - wasn't very scientific, I just wound the offside track rod in by about 3mm, but it seems to have improved things as the steering wheel is now straight and the steering feels more precise, plus it's less squealy around tight corners.  Staking in the rear hub nut was a twat of a job, as the drum sticks out well beyond the nut which means you can't get a punch straight on the nut, you have to approach it from about a 45o angle, which makes it rather awkward.

I've also fitted a dual lighter socket to the 205, ready to run the sat nav on its run down to Surrey next weekend.  The original lighter socket was knackered, and the feed to it was fluctuating between about 3.5 and 8 volts, which I couldn't figure out but which rendered the whole thing useless anyway.  So I took a live feed straight from my retro-fit horn button, threaded it past the heater box, which was fun*, and over the stereo into the back of the dual socket thingy.  It all works OK, although I couldn't find a drill bit small enough for the screws to hold the socket onto the dash, so for the moment it's held on with one of those sticky number plate holding strips.

That was about it for fettling this weekend - I decided I deserved a weekend off after spending the last two months' worth of weekends crawling around under either the C4 or the 205.  Normal service will doubtless be resumed shortly - I need to have a bash at the trailing arm bush on the 45 for one thing.

I went along yesterday too and agree about some of the lots being rather pricey, such as the low mileage X-Type which went for just under £6k before the fees were added on. Or the Sierra estate for £2400

However some of the things that went through were very cheap, the MG Midget for £1250, S500 for £420 and Bentley Mulsanne S for £1700 had me rather surprised.

Do you know what the red 214i got to when it came through? I was curious to see what it sold for, but had to leave after the Cavalier went through in order to get to work on time.

Bentley Mulsanne S for £1700 had me rather surprised.

That car was a pile of shit, with a fist-sized hole in one of the sills, rust bubbles everywhere and peeling veneer inside..  Me and the mate I'd gone along with were poking around it at the same time as a RR / Bentley enthusiast - I mentioned xtriple's head gasket woes to my mate which caused the other chap to engage us in conversation about the joys of owning aging Bentleys, and he reckoned it was worth £2K tops, so 1700 was about right.

Missed the R8 going through, but the results should be online in a few days.

You won't believe how much better that makes me feel, I was shocked after the hammer fell at that price. I was thinking that was the missed opportunity of the day.

That Marina is class & the ital looks good to. Are you going for a saloon next?

I doubt it, I haven't got the space what I have got at the moment! Found out yesterday that my in laws garage that I was told I could borrow again has been filled with my brother in laws gym equipment! That's buggered me right up now!

I'm sick to death of those fucking shit Top Gear and piano jokes, they weren't funny 10 years ago.

Was one of the Marina's trashed not fixed by a chap in the owners club? A purple car from memory.

Audi chief Rupert Stadler arrested in diesel emissions probe

The chief executive of German carmaker Audi, Rupert Stadler, has been arrested in connection with an investigation into the diesel emissions scandal.

A spokesman for Volkswagen, which owns Audi, confirmed he was being held.

Munich prosecutors said they had acted because of a risk that Mr Stadler might seek to suppress evidence.

The little brass caps on the Hudson engine between the spark plugs are priming cups.  As the name suggests, they allow you to manually prime the cylinders with fuel before starting the car.  Fairly standard fitment for the period.

I put this in for its first MOT test since I've owned it today.

Thankfully it passed! The tester commented that it was in better condition that most 5 year old cars he tests which was nice! He did say that the CO reading was off the scale which I knew about as it smokes from overfueling so I must sort that out and the handbrake wasn't as good one side but being a auto it wasn't a bit deal.

I've also been offered a 1970s Mazda 1000 today randomly, it's a friends ex partners father who's died who lives on the road behind, apparently his garden was full of old cars including MK1 Golfs and Minis and this Mazda is still there, i went to take a look but it's under a tarp but they want it gone. I'm waiting for more details on it but if it's not a shitter I'll be looking for a home for it hopefully (my Inn is already over subscribed with cars!)

I had to look it up to remember what it looked like. Haven't seen one since the, er, 1970s.

Had an excellent skip find today when I spotted a "mid-century modern" piece hanging out next to a skip with a big note that read "TAKE ME".  A knock on the door to confirm it was indeed free and Mike and I carried it home since it was literally around the corner but too big to fit in any of our cars.  Someone's been at it with the upcycling chalk paint, which is the only issue.  It doesn't look terrible, but it certainly feels terrible and the paint is well past the first flush of youth.

Df_ZraPX4AErqZf.jpg

What's amazing is that they didn't do any prep at all so with some soapy water and a putty knife you can literally scrape the blue paint off to reveal suprisingly good veneer underneath.  Once fully cleaned I'll seal the lot with a satin varnish.

Df_Z3LUX4AEM6pM.jpg

Apart from the paint there's nothing missing or damaged, which is nothing short of amazing on this sort of furniture.  When I'm done it'll get a coat of satin varnish to reseal everything and hopefully look like this unmolested example.

after our success on saturday, sunday we failed in our quest to get both mini's to murton park.

getting within 50-odd yards of the lock-up containing the orange mini, we ground to a halt in th eblack one. no mire drive, though the speedo was still registering speed even though we weren't moving, along with a horrid clunck from the car when the clutch was disengaged. looking under the bonnet, i found that the n/s drive shaft was spinning happily away but not actually moving the wheels..... seems we broke a cv joint, and probably shagged up the drive shaft in the process.....

post-18270-0-08176900-1529345407_thumb.jpg

bugger.....

post-18270-0-62835200-1529345437_thumb.jpg

well nothing for it but get cocopop, run across to the FiL's and get  the "thunderbird" (or is t Blunderbird, maybe Chunderbird, whether or not you care for a metro.)

a quick turn of the key, and marvin burst (a bit grumpily) in to life. well we have ignored him for an age, or at leat a month or so. poor marvin....

post-18270-0-15332900-1529345626_thumb.jpg

so armed with a ratched strap (cos the proper tow rope is at home in the back of the rover) our sad little convoy made it up to the lock-up. the broken car wa deposited inside, dunno when we'll get to look at it cos, well, we'll bet around to it, maybe.....

Hope you aren't now seen as the robbing git who tried to steal it for a fraction of its worth.

Good commitment there MM, thanks for sharing the pics

ETA: Did your missus carry the "PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ME" sign around all day, or did it go on the car? :D

no, kerry was just putting the toy cocopop on the dash board of, er, cocopop when i took the picture!

but things breaking on old cars is all part of the joy* of owning such a vehicle.....

when we changed the outer CV joint boots one of the joints was an absolute nightmare to get back onto the end of the drive shaft, we are betting that it was this alkward joint that has broken.

and apparently i've taken the failure far better than kerry was expecting.. the swearing and shouting will occure when we are trying to fix the car, no doubt when we are trying, and failling to get it back together!!

She should not hold her breath.  My son's '94 Tipo was won by a bidder that went to £621.  He was a no show, a bit like the chap who won it a week or two earlier.  The other Tipo that was for sale ( a three door) went for about £1200 and, guess what, the bidder did not turn up.  It has been relisted. My son can't be arsed relisting again and has found a friend who will buy it -  but not until the end of August.

No delivery Fred because I only remembered to take two photos; my Saab turbo has gone to it's new home chez-chatsharris.

That's my father in law there on winching duty:

A pleasure to meet chatsharris; hopefully he's got more patience than me with which to learn the ways of the K-jet.

Didn't do any Woollarding or any of that malarkey so you'll have to make do with a pic of the 900 on the trailer when I stopped to make sure it hadn't fallen off.

I've since found out she was actually after £100 for it! I would have given her more than that for it but I haven't the room anyway. At least it's her son selling it and not some chancer.

Okay, I get upcycling, I really do.  I hate the word, but some of the things people make from broken old rubbish is neat.  This thing though hasn't so much as a veneer chip, a cup ring, a scratch... nothing.  Before someone went at it with chalk paint it was actually perfect.  It's satisfying to return it to the previous state, but also annoying knowing that it was originally in great condition anyway.

I must have been lucky getting a Tipo buyer who turned up and paid in full. I had fancied that three door as it looks class but now I've got another car incoming can't.
