Just went to start up my sisters old Ka that's been on the drive. It was last started about 6 weeks ago, but I thought I'd let it run a bit to warm it up and get some charge in the battery - anyway, check this out:

My friend's old 206, which has been sat on his drive for about 2 years, is roughly the same - but nowhere near as bad as that!!

Two options:

A) bleach all that mould from the steering wheel and gearstick,

B) Take it down to your local car valeting service, usually the Polish guys up here would have all that off...

Ah fucking great, I left the Ka running for half an hour, came back and the heater wasn't warm so I decided to feel if the hoses were hot - top hose was hot and felt like there was plenty of pressure in it, then I checked the hoses that go to the matrix.

As soon as I touched them, one of the hose tails snapped clean off and the car emptied a load of boiling hot coolant all over my hand. I've been running it under cold water (my hand, not the car) for ages but it's a pretty bright shade of red and is stinging like a mofo.

Turns out that this is just a replaceable heater valve thing that is only cheap off ebay new. If it was the matrix (and I'd have to take the dash out) it'd probably be getting weighed.

Kinell re. the heater hose and your hand.

Now for the mildew. It very easily comes off with warm vinegar water and if you use vinegar, it won't come back in quite a while.

I haven't seen it build as bad and quick in a Euro car, but everybody who owns or owned Yanks won't find this the least bit unusual.

The interior on my mate's S plate Fiesta went exactly like that. To be fair he'd kept it in a leaky garage with no ventilation, and it did clean quite easily with some Mr Muscle thankfully.

FFS cobblers, nowt you do is straightforward, is it? Hate to break it to you but there's mould on the seat bolsters as well.

TBH I'm always tinkering with something so I reckon I only get my fair percentage of stuff going to bollocks.

I went at the mould with a slightly damp sponge with some mildly bleachy water, it seems to have mostly sorted it. Apparently bleach will kill the mould or something, I saw it on telly.

The fabric is slightly marked but it'll wet vac out, I didn't bother with that since the last thing that car needs is any more moisture inside it.

Ideally I wanted to leave it running for ages to get the interior nice and hot to dry it out so it doesn't go mega mouldy again straight away, but the water squirting everywhere situation has seen to that plan. I've got the battery on a charger and a 2kw fan heater in it, I'll leave that going for a few hours with the window cracked a bit and see how things go. Ideally I need to put the sod through a test and get it off my drive, but I'm not insured on it so I'm at the mercy of a mate with a traders policy.

Was invited toa Dub meet today - I politely declined. Instead I redid the stereo and speaker wiring in the Corolla as well as fitting my sub. Also found a Bedford pen under the seats which was quite exciting, until I found it doesn't work

Had a stage 1 remap done on the Saab today, whoosh!! Unfortunately it's been found that the cat is probably partially clogged as it won't reach full boost.

Right, took the Rover to wash snow/salt and accumulated dirt off, whilst passing I decided to check Steves stock (the bloke who volksy bought the Maestro off) and actually met the lad as he was packing up, we got talking and he showed me some of the cars he has.

I'm also hoping to head up Scotchland soon to pick up a free Rover Sterling KV6, its located in Glaasge, its got some test on it so a train ticket, some insurance and tax is hopefully all it'll cost. If the car runs well, then I'll be looking to store the 827 somewhere as I can't really be having too many cars outside.

It finally happened for real! I'm really far too excited about these wheels, seriously, what's wrong with me?

I've been down the garage today, fitted 2 new tyres on the mondeo, then installed a pair of RHD headlights in the Xsara, replaced a brokken coil spring and fixed a couple of non-working lights so we're now ready for an MOT retest. Brilliant!

Posted

Fitted a new pair of tailgate struts to the Granada. SGS Engineering of Derby come highly recommended- right parts, brand new clips, fast delivery, not too expensive (£37 all in).

Golf umbrella also really helpful when trying to change the buggers on one's own.

very common.... piss easy to fix

decided to scrape some of the bubbly rust paint from the lower archs of the mondeo and apply some Kurust... maybe this year ill do it

Wuv's Sierra will be staying within the nut house i.e. Autoshite as I'll be buying and collecting it on Saturday :) Train ticket is booked and the cash is already sheathed in a brown envelope, so roll on the weekend! I'm hoping it'll be a keeper as it pretty much ticks all the boxes for me, which means I can then focus on buying something silly and frivolous later in the year.

Trev2 now has an MOT! I took him for a spin and remembered quite why I love these ugly little shittlebricks so much!

If i suggest changing a car wing on here in future can someone please talk me out of it  , What a mare, I ordered a secondhand one of ebay for £40 in the correct colour thinking i could swap it over to replace my rotten old one, it turns up with dents, scratches and scabs that wasn't listed in the advert.

I repair the scab and flat it down ready for polishing then I removed my old one this afternoon, which was more of a mission then i was expecting.

it then turns out the new one has a bracket in a different place to my old on even though It's listed as being the same year, so much botching makes me a new bracket and can i get the door shut to line up now, can i fook. Wish i hadn't started the job now.

I feel for you trigger I had exactly the same problem changing that door on my Puma. i wish I'd never started it I could have fixed it and painted it 3 times over the amount of time it took me to fit the new one.

Posted

The annoying thing is I used to do this for living but fitting a genuine wing on a 2 year old Honda Civic is a 100% easier then fitting the wrong wing on a 18 year old Golf.

They are a real bad design though, there's a massive dirt trap at the bottom of the wing which just build up, it's no wonder my rotted away.

This lot fell out when I took the wing off, 18 years of wet dirt behind the splash shield.

I hate changing wings I always have bother finding hidden screws and bolts on the the bumpers to get the wing off.. The Puma's got exactly the same shit design on the bottom of the wings,. I ended up cutting the bottom of the wing off and welding in a new bottom from an old kia wing I had lieing around.

I've also had a frustrating day of tinkering. Have failed to sort the 2CV's exhaust (though it is a lot better) , then an indicator wire broke as I removed the wing for a service. Then I spotted a failed engine mounting. Then I spent hours searching my shit-tip of a garage for the tools and parts I know I definitely own. Then I started taking photos instead.

My Blog contains edited highlights, which make it sound like I had a jolly old time really. Poetic licence. I certainly have learnt that my 2CV is very rusty and utterly neglected. I feel very guilty.

On the plus side, I bought a new screwdriver from B&Q for 95p. It hasn't broken yet.

That pic of the 2CV made me chuckle, should defo go in the calendar thread.

Forgive my stupidity but i thought 2CVs were aircooled.

That big fan can't just be for the heater.

All aircooled cars (pretty much anyway) need a big fan to shove air around. Volkswagens have them at the front of the engine, so you don't really see them. It's one reason they're so noisy - that and the fact that you have to have lots of exposed metal for the cooling effect to work. It's a LOT quieter with the fan removed, but you can't run the engine for too long before ruining it. Lomax kit cars have exposed engines like a motorbike, so they usually do away with the fan.

Posted

Interesting.

I thought air just flowed into the grill and then was drawn out through those bits on the wings (just below the bonnet) that look like dents.

That fan in front of the engine on Beetles can't do much go there, they don't have any forward vents for drawing air in do they?

Another couple of hours spent this afternoon has seen the wing replacement finished on my Golf, I'm still not 100% happy with it but it's not a million miles out now, I'm sticking it up for sale shortly so hopefully any potential new buyers won't notice it.

That looks great, Trig. Just make sure that Phileas Fogg and his deflated balloon don't twat into the other side though.
