Came home from work this afternoon to find this:

Have told insurance and cops, but dunno what happens next- Polo was going for it's MOT on Tuesday,after I've got it all prepped, just clicked over 70k.

There do seem to me more of these hit while parked incidents round here than there used to be. I'm putting it down to bigger car that people can't judge as well as people texting.

 

No excuse for not putting their details on the car after though, they surely can't have not noticed.

That bump looks quite high and seeing as you are parked on the correct side of the road I would suspect somebody has reversed into it with a 4x4 or hilux type vehicle.

I'm not sure whether to be disappointed or not. I have been outbid on a Volvo 240 estate on ebay, I don't really need one at the moment, but was justifying it on the basis that it would be cheaper to run for work than the Land Rover. I should probably consider something a little more economical.

Urban MPG on a Volvo would probably be low 20s, high 20s on a run, 30s if you're David Fowler.

There are better choices.

I've had quite a few 240 estates, as I really like them, they would be more economical than the Land Rover, but I appreciate there are more economical choices out there

Couldn't remember when I last serviced the Honda. Thankfully, I tend to take regular photos of the speedo, because the trip reset doesn't work (essential for mpg calculations). I also took a photo of me servicing it in May. It has done under 3000 miles since then, so that's fine. Won't need a service until it's properly cold... 

 

I've also entirely lost track of where we're at with Nippa servicing, but as I seem to have ordered spark plugs for it in late March, that's probably ok as well. 2CV is overdue another grease session, plus I need to invent a battery clamp and re-attach the ignition box so it doesn't fall off again. And sort out the wiring to the nearside headlamp, as it doesn't work. And sort out the alignment of the offside one, as it's crap. Instead of doing all this at the weekend, I instead spent most of it cleaning and waxing the Lexus. Which promptly got shat on by the sahara desert. TIME WELL SPENT.

Volvo 940 passed it's MoT earlier, needed a new exhaust center section (to replace the Cole can repaired original) but always nice when the garage say it is very solid underneath.

That is a bloody miserable start to the week, sorry to see it I worry about what insurance companies do in these situations. Depending on the excess on the insurance, would it not be possible for you to end up paying the full repair cost to get your "insurance"? Not only that, the insurer would obviously then put up the insurance because there is a claim. Basically what is there to prevent you paying everything and then paying far more for future policies?

 

I had someone drive into my 206 one pitch black night last year (car long gone now). A man turned up later claiming his cousin crashed it and was terrified. Since he came to me I said one way or another I want the damage fixed and to be fair to him he gave me address and phone number. Subsequent negotiations went badly as anticipated. He was going to take the car to be fixed apparently which was a big no no. I asked for the registration number for this quad bike, which of course wasn't forthcoming. In the meantime I informed the police, who acknowledged it was very unlikely that the quad was road legal. They weren't interested enough to go to the guy's address (he did actually live there) and I was told he later somehow deactivated his SIM card after they got in touch with him. Basically I had the person's name, number, address and an admission that he had been witness to a hit and run by an underaged child on an unregistered quad. Police not interested. I said fair enough police have real crime to chase, but subsequently sighted the same fellow riding round town drunk with an unregistered quad screaming. Police still not interested. I'm not sad my Pug got smashed or that I lost out having to fix it myself, but one day that lad will hurt someone. He did not care for anyone but himself, that much was obvious. The saddest thing was that the lad knew exactly how to handle law enforcement to get out of everything. My suggestion in any similar situation would be to call 999 immediately if someone bangs on your door in the dark standing next to the car he/she has clipped. No point trying to be amicable (provided no-one was hurt or anything serious in which case 999 anyway).

I have driven lots of non cat 2.3i Autos some new, generally 27 mpg and close to 30mpg on a run. I can't tell on the one we have now because the speedo will not work for long enough.

Interesting feature from BBC. Guy puts his old shite petrol Golf up against his dads (fairly) modern Skoda diesel for a proper emissions test.  

Also interestingly the 9 year old Skoda is cleaner than most current models.

Myself and I think Dave Fowler use aCar which is now part of the fuelly family - the new layout is a bit of a faff but it does the job.

Well, he does say they live in London, so it's important their car isn't a negative factor for the air their child will breathe.

 

I assume since I was last in London all of the Londiniumites have migrated to electric cars, and and an old 1.8 golf would have been significantly detrimental to the air quality.

Considering the Golf might use single point injection, barely more advanced than a carb, it did well.

My dad is also considering a hybrid for his next car - not for enviro-mental reasons but because he likes the idea of driving around town on electric.  The problem is that most of them are autos and mum doesn't like driving autos.

Am I allowed to call bullshit on this?. They just don't want to pay the going rate, and are now going to waste time and money employing a permie on 1/4 the money who will probably and hopefully fuck it up.
