Today I fitted a stereo to a 51 plate civic for a friend, it's an absolute bastard of a job and it killed one of my screwdriver bits.

 

Also changed my intake manifold over for the cleaned one. That was less work than doing the stereo. Still lacerated my hands though.

It's easy, they shatter. One super tight screw is all it takes.

No collection thread as I bought it this afternoon on a total whim, but here is the latest addition to the family and my first hydro pneumatic Citroen too:

It's a 2005 c5 1.8 lx estate with 77k miles under its belt and a strong smell of fags after its previous owners smoked roll ups in it... first impressions are very favourable, it's lovely and smooth, plus pretty much everything is working on it (at least until it takes offence at some thing and declares a general strike!&

 

The rover has gone on to pastures new and resulted in this old bus costing me a paltry £250... not a bad return for 8 months motoring!

That looks bloody lovely. These are on my radar for when there are no more Rover 75s left.

 

Is it definitely the wafty suspension though? I thought that only the facelift exclusives got the hydropneumatic gubbins?

Nope. All those C5s were hydro. It was only the Mk3 where it was reserved for the top of the range only.

Yep- it's the hydro effort, but it doesn't have the extra balls (Fnar, fnar) that give it sports mode... apparently the posh ones have a firmer ride, but I'm quite content with wafting around.

 

I think the very last ones dropped the set up for steel springs, but I could be horribly wrong.

I'm really confused now! I've yet driven a MK1 facelift that was definitely on springs & didn't have the uppy downy buttons...

 

But if it's the case that they did have the hydrowhatsits then they've just become 100000x more appealing to me!

How the hell do you do that to a screwdriver bit?

Apparently by trying to undo a screw that's been right next to an AC vent for 16 years. Wasn't even using a ratchet, just the screwdriver handle.

Most Honda screws have a hex head on them too, so you can undo them with a socket+ratchet.

Chap in work was talking about the local oddball in his village, you know the type, falling down house ,big scruffy beard and never says a word to anyone. Anyhow this guy's now passed away and when the local solicitor was clearing the near derelict house there's only a bloody a pre war Aston Martin stashed in the shed!!  I'm hoping to see a pic in the next few days, stuff of dreams !

Sorry, but all Mk1s (and Mk2s in Citroen fanboi speak) were definitely hydro. No springs allowed. The entirely reworked Mk3 (or second gen) had the option.

How the hell do you do that to a screwdriver bit?

Usually by using a bit that doesn't fit properly, ie a Philips bit (tapered splines) in a Pozidrive (parallel splines) screw. Then there's the Japanese parallel spline screws with a different angle and depth, and bits where the points are too long, and don't forget Supadrive and other proprietry head forms.**

 

There are so many different proprietry screw head / driver combinations....... Thank fuck for Torx.

 

But even if it is the right bit in the right size for the screw, you can still break the driver if it isn't exactly in line with the screw.

 

** With the screw horizontal it should be possible to support the driver bit and handle with the correct bit for the screw.

This was certainly my understanding, and Wikipedia agrees.  2007 on second-gen is the first C5 with steel springs.

 

C5 (hydro) certainly on my radar - but there seem to be very few decent ones left.  Some car mag bought a V6 one for a banger rally and found it was hiding an Emmental chassis very well - it went to the bridge instead of Pisa or wherever.

Fixed* the window on the Vectra - the one the wife had strict instructions not to use, but, predictably, did.

 

*bodged it shut and disconnected the switch

Ebay UK was perused nightly 'just out of interest like' , am not actually going to bid on anything....

The collection (from Kent ffs) is booked for this Sunday!

Well, it looked nice and I do like 'em..

Honda booked in for a fettling session at possibly the UK's only S-MX specialist. On Monday. In Sheerness. Down that way with work, so it almost makes sense! Chap is going to replace the rear suspension bushes and do a gearbox flush. Let's see if that cures the revvy change issue. The other week, I put my foot down to overtake someone and it just hit the rev limiter! Driven with care, it's fine, but you do have to drive around the issue - the key is to manually do a kickdown, and give it time to get that gear nice and selected before you boot it.

Thanks to Tamworthbay I now have a wheelie crawler board. It's an absolute revelation, how have I never had one before. Had a fair bit to do under the Kallista this evening and this made life so much easier.

 

Propshaft and rear exhaust sections fitted, with relative ease.

Ah you're going to 'the island' the bridge is good fun. Loads of chod out there, keep 'em peeled. Locals known as swampy's!

Could be a plan. I've not been anywhere near a Mk1 Mondeo for a long time! No idea of arrival time yet, but I know I can't get to my AirBnB until 7pm. Knowledge of local food options could be handy!

So I got to the bridge just as it happened, according to the time on that report.

 

Fucking mouth-breather. It's not as if there were massive light-up signs every few hundred yards, running for several miles either side of the bridge, that said FORTH ROAD BRIDGE CLOSED TO HIGH SIDED VEHICLES. CAUTION HIGH WINDS. etc. etc.
