Should have got an earlier one with no lights in the bumper.

Or move to Pembrokeshire where nobody will be surprised that your rear lights don't work nor would they expect you to be using the indicators anyway

The non collection, seller delivering caper has occurred. Mrs crap car collector is well happy, she's wanted her own since I've repaired my own GTV. Looks a lovely straight thing too.

Great service.1 wiperblade ordered Saturday teatime, delivered Tuesday lunchtime.Nice touch with the air freshener.

Wow!!!!!!! If you can get it semi ship shape you're onto a winner there

It'll be £125 by the time it gets here on the back of a truck but still probably worth a look.

That's less than I paid for mine, which was also pretty shambolic. It did run though. Sort of. Rotating drum dials FTW!

Mk1 BX estate in white?  YSPLS (in my dreams, cannot has in reality)

Yes, except changing a bulb in the upper lamp units involves dismantling the pop-up seats so is even more of a ball-ache.

Sound advice. The Discovery seldom leaves Gower, thankfully, where much the same applies.

Meanwhile massive excitement about a mk1 BX and Dermist's Dedra (my old one). Can't wait for updates on both of those.

I know a mate converted his 300 series Disco to 200Series lights to get rid of the bumper ones when he made a 5mm steel bumper for off roading.

TBH I must have changed a rear bulb as I had my Disco years, I don't recall doing it though. Mind you I did rebuild the gearbox on a workmate stood in the road behind it & it worked when I put it back. So bulbs tend to fade into insignificance.

Have a pic of the inside of a LT77 for no particular reason.

Mike's replaced Nugget the Corsa with something larger for daily use out of necessity.  I can't take Nugget on as I've already got as many cars as I can handle (I know, it's a weak excuse) and we would both like to see it stay within Autoshite so it at least carries on being used and looked after.

As a result of that, would folks be interested in a raffle?  I reckon it'd be about £7.50 a ticket (£450 divided by 59) and it'll come with several months MoT, the last two having passed with a clean sheet and all welding done.

A couple of promising buyers have let us down and Mike doesn't want to go through the ballache that is bumtree, etc.

I've done nearly 250 miles in the Getz today (well yesterday now technically), and I can still walk, which is a good thing.  I've now done about 1,000 miles in it since purchase.  The clutch doesn't seem to be getting any worse, although that may just be me learning to drive around it.  Picking my way through the fens this evening the headlights seemed spectacularly shit, but when I stopped for a piss at a services I noticed they were almost opaque with dirt, despite me only cleaning them earlier this week - a quick wipe down with the sponge and I could see where I was going again.

I actually like the car far more than I feel I should, given that it's relatively modern and very much an "appliance" car - and especially given that the first Getz I experienced - the 1.3 auto I rented in Australia - I absolutely hated.  I reckon the comically shit engine gives it just enough character to keep me interested.  Whilst there's no way I'm going to pay for it to have the clutch done, forking out 40 quid for a new friction plate and having a bash at it myself is now looking like a distinct possibility.

I'm trying to find a car for my parents at the moment - they've recently moved back to Blighty and while they're still running around in their French C4 at the moment, they won't be able to renew the insurance when it expires next month.  My brother is going to buy it off them, but they need something to tide them over - criteria are roughly C4-sized, 5 doors, reliable, modernish and for a budget of around £1500.  He's decided (without any prompting from me) that he doesn't want to risk a diesel at that money. I've also persuaded him to rule out anything French.

Top of the list at the moment are Kia Ceed and Hyundai i30.  I was supposed to be viewing a Ceed this afternoon, being sold by what according to the ad was a small but well-established family owned dealership - so I was expecting a small forecourt, with a row of shined-up cars with prices in the window, you know the thing.  Turned out to be some lad flogging a few motors on the side out of the back of his parents' Indian restaurant.  The car may well have been OK, but I didn't fancy risking 1500 quid of my parents' money to find out, so the hunt continues.  I've found a nice looking i30, but the mileage is a bit on the high side, which I wouldn't give a toss about but he might, so we'll have to see on that one.  I'm also looking at the pre-spaceship-shape Honda Civics, which are a bit cheaper ('cos older) and seem to be pretty good barring occasional issues with gearbox bearings, and the last shape Toyota Corolla - although a lot of those seem to be 3-door.  It's surprising how difficult it is to find petrol-engined cars in that size bracket, even at ten years old.

Posted

5 dr focus? Lots to choose from. Petrol are pretty good even the smallest 1.4 and you'll get a minter for well under your budget.

Posted

Can't they just reregister their C5 here? I didn't think there was much to it when importing from within europe?

Posted

Might want RHD?

I agree that a Focus might be an alright idea.

Had no idea you could get Ceeds and i30s for £1500.

Posted

Focus is a possibility, but they hired a Mk2 Focus years ago when they were new and my dad wasn't particularly impressed at the time.

On the look out for something to replace the Saab.

Main requirement is something interesting and fun to drive that won't fit a child in and difficult to get in when you're old. Need to get the last fun car in before we have kids!

Smart Roadster is still at the top of the list. Unfortunately not too many about, especially as I really like the coupé style more and I don't really want to pay more than £2k. Prices are already on the rise too from when I started looking before Xmas. :(

Replacing the in-bumper bulbs is the work of seconds, with joyfully simple bayonet bulb holders.  It's replacing the entire light units that's a pain which is why I gave up.

Sorry for the rather lightweight news item though, maybe I should have put it on the grumpy thread instead.

Try messaging njgleeds he will probably have something that meets your needs.

It's all about the Vauxhall's in Teesside today. Even the neighbour agrees.

Off to a start of year 'retro' meet with RichBraith and a couple of others, I couldn't be chewed fighting my way through the rubbish in my garage to release the Talbot, so the Cavalier has been cleaned for the event instead.

Spent last night down the pub, decided I want a LDV Pilot/Convoy or Layland Sherpa crew-cab with bevertail set up. If it's a V8 It's all the better.

Then I remembered I can get a Crew Cab tipper 'truck' from China....

sudong-3.jpg?x21786

For only $1052.

Then I remembered It was likely the drink talking.

One can dream...

I haven't posted the best* part about it yet.

But honestly would love to have one!

Will post more in the "Never knew it existed" thread.

Puma?  Â£500 should get you a good 1.7 without too many Rice Crispies in the rear arches and they're on the cusp of appreciating...he said optimistically.

Puma fails on 'not getting kids in' I'm afraid. A friend of mine regularly transports her three children (and the dog!) in her Puma.

Today I applied to the local council to rent a lock-up as their website is showing 2 available in a row just a mile from me and on my route to/from work every day. Need to sort out my collection of 2-wheeled chod and mountain of "useful" spares so keep your fingers crossed that the man from the council he say yes. I promise to start a thread on all my 2 wheeled conveyances in the spring when they get shuffled around and I can take some photo's. Currently not riding anything as I'm still recovering from a broken leg sustained last year when I dropped an XR650 on it......

Had the granada running today - it had not been run since last summer. A charge of the battery was enough for it to start straight away.

Oddly the rear n/s electric window, which had not worked in over 20 years, freed itself off.

I hope you avoided scratching the XR after all that effort to get your leg under it to protect it...

X1/9 then. Fun and no chance of back seat passengers!
