Ah yes, the Mk1 Focus saloon with it's stoved-in boot design feature.

Quick question, would you normally need to reface a clutch flywheel on a 45000 mile 6 year old Mazda MX5 when changing the clutch?. I'd say no but i want to check...

Went down to Lidl today to buy a set of their cheap wipers for the Saab, after destroying the current set while they wiped when frozen ice on the screen that we've been having. Cheapest I could find in ECP/etc was Bosch only at £20 for a pair. The only ones they had nearest were 21" ones. Apparently suitable for the 9000 and 9-3 but not 9-5. The 9-5 has 22.5" wipers.

Bought them anyway and even though they're smaller than the originals, they wipe the screen just fine with no noticeable missed areas. 5quid for the pair. A bargain if they work.

Top tip. Either check the blades are free on a chilly morning or lift the arms entirely the night before (the locals may do this for you if you live near a university). I tend to do that before snow for exactly the reason you discovered.

If it makes you feel better, I absolutely cannot perform an oil change with spillage of some sort. Every single time.

Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve with nipple option + tube + old 5 litre screen wash bottle. You'll still need a drain pan, but only to catch what comes from the filter area.

That is indeed an excellent tip. However I was late for work and forgot! I also usually only scrape ice off, but with the Saab I have the luxury* that I really don't need to care about it and so can just spray de-icer all over it.

It's especially important to make sure the wipers are free before turning the ignition on my other cars, as they both have automatic wipers. Jamming them is a sure fire way to have a really bad morning.

My 206 used to handily blow the fuse when the wipers were frozen to the screen!

I always lift the blades to scrape under thrm, but one morning recently I had to use screenwash 20 seconds after setting off and the bastard stuff froze on the screen... Wipers on fill cleared it fairly quickly, and they now wipe better, must have sanded off the shit top edge.

I want to replace them, mainly because the body of them holds water which flicks back on the last pass, but I'm gonna wait until the salts gone in the spring before taking the plunge, no point in ruining a nice new set now

Had one of those on the Hilux brilliant bit of kit, tried to buy one for the present Landcruiser, same engine, but they put a note on the system not recommended due to the thread doesn't screw in far enough due to sump design, i'd have thought the sumps would be the same, heyho.

Trouble is its a 7.5 litre sump with the bloody large bore plug right in the middle and hot oil comes out at a shocking rate, but better sited than on the Hilux where without the Fumoto the full force of draining oil hit the bloody cross member, wasn't that fun* the first time i dropped the oil and it flowed from about 6 different points all around the bloody front frame, great.

Also no good given a car is unlikely to get more than one oil change (or even that) during my ownership.

If the handbook is to be believed, I should be changing my oil every 5 minutes because I do mega miles and it's all short trips. I should look into one of those.

Spotted recently by a friend of mine in Billingborough, Lincolnshire.  No exact location given, but the village is quite small so if you were inclined to you could scout this one out.

For the second time in two days I have just managed to stop myself from messaging the seller of this. The first time was when he listed the Audi 100 Avant behind it.

I can see this from my window at work.

I got a proper look at this today and Mike told me it'll be up for sale shortly. It's a stunning looking car, the colour combination is ideal and it's just worn enough for me to really admire it. I have a lot of love for the look of the 304 and this one, with its silver bodywork, black hard top and neat little steel wheels and hubcaps is just perfect as it is. It's beyond my financial reach, perhaps fortunately, and does need a little work here and there. I'd still love to own it though, these have to be one of the most stylish cars ever produced.

EDIT: oh look, it's on eBay. Definitely beyond my financial reach. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152364961487

Bastard!

The trader I sold that to a few months ago assured me he was buying it to restore for him and his wife because he'd always wanted one of these.

Never for a second did I think he'd spend twenty minutes tidying it up a bit and sell it for a profit.

In an effort to get a bit of my monies worth out of the Saab, I've been driving it more. Now progressed beyond 210k!

So that's probably about 800 miles in my ownership...

Which driving around the city is quite a long time sat in the seat. Speaking of seats, the father-in-law remarked at how comfy they were and reckoned they were much better than the Laguna's. I would unfortantly have to agree with him on that. Saab seats really are superb.

So much so the thought has pass my mind to sell the Laguna and get a Saab Aero estate. The Saab would be quicker, more comfortable, more economical and more practical. However the Laguna has far more toys, so quiet (I had to peer over to the dash while the wife was driving as I thought the Engine had stopped) and I really haven't got bored of that V6 growl yet.

I just can't do it to myself to get rid of the Laguna just yet. Also realised that there is only 103 Facelift Laguna v6 Initalie like mine that are on the road & SORN. So if I got rid of it, I'd be a hard thing to ever find one again. It's a rare thing.

So I actually paid my XM some attention for a change. Last time I was at it barely started, died then refused to run at all. I chucked a couple litres of fuel in it today and after some cranking and struggling it actually fired. I guess it just ran out of fuel the last time I ran it which so far as I can tell means one of two things. 1) It leaks. Or 2) The fuel warning light comes on just to let you know that it's going to die right now and it's far too late to do anything about it. I tried to turn it around to make it easier to get at later, but it was defeated by some wet grass on a tiny incline.

I don't know where the chap that has it now bought it from, in all honesty, nor what he paid for it.  Tiny world that it belonged to yourself, a shiter, I dare say it was considerably less expensive when you were selling it?

Posted

I advertised it and sold it for about half what it's advertised for now.

It needed welding, bodywork repairs and a full mechanical refresh. There was a head gasket set included in the price. It ran, but wouldn't hold coolant.

It looks like it has been hoovered, but to be fair, it may have had a good deal of work done. At the time it needed £7500 spent on it to turn it into a £6000 car. These appear to be really undervalued. A cracker appears to be about £6000.

A bit of welding, head gasket set, coolant leak fixed and brake/suspension refresh would see it MoTd and useable.

I'm way too long in the tooth to have believed the "always wanted one of these" bullshit too. His desire for one started the second he saw mine advertised cheaply.

Aye. The diff exploded soon after getting my 360 as it had broken when he owned it and his mate welded all the fragments back together.

He did fail to mention this though.

Similar story with Mike's 340 I think. I wouldn't buy anything off him.

I went for a drive, and I saw this. I still find these very attractive. LOL at the 66-plate Fiat UGLY with quality giffer gaffer tape repairs.

Sorry, I'm rather unwell at the moment. I hope the wait is worth it.

I did manage a journey in the 2CV without breaking down though!

I was toying with the idea of driving it to Coventry tomorrow, but given how grotty I feel and how bloody loud the 2CV is, I may choose an alternative mode of transport. I do have sound-deadening plans.

Indeed. Which as we all know is short for MOAR PICKCHERS.

Focus collected. Winning bidder was a breaker from Stockport who feely admitted it could net him around £1k in spares. He stated business was brisk.
