AMC lights - Wobbled wires under dash, sidelights all came to life.  Great fix but I will have to sort it out properly at some point.

Decided to check timing to see if that would help with the stalling when setting off problem.

I bought one of those fancy dial timing lights a while back.  Ironically, the correct timing for the AMC is TDC, so the dial was spurious.  It seemed to be set to about 10 degrees BTDC, so I corrected it.

This made absolutely zero difference to the stalling problem, so put the car cover back on and gave up - turned my attention to looking at the MOT fail areas on the Mondeo.  I am very tempted to do the brake pipes as it really doesn't look too bad a job.  Far too cold today though.

Hello all,

10 years ago tonight I bought my Range Rover. Unfortunately I was still fat and bald even then.

Going on previous with old yank carbs, could be the accelerator pump diaphragm be torn..

That's a Lister "Start-o-matic" genset. engines that look visually similar to that one were made from the late 50's onward,  The last versions made in 1985.

They will run on veg (if it's warm enough), but the power output will be lower, which could be quite important with a genny.

Precisely, it's a start-o-matic!

The problem is that whatever setting it's on (auto or manual) it just doesn't crank it quick enough to catch. I'm all but certain it's running on diesel. Probably red.

Could it be ready for the battery(ies) and their leads replacing or updating. I swapped my battery leads for 70mm sq welding cable and it made a big difference to cranking speed.

Hmm, I'm no expert but I'd start with the batteries.

Was helping my dad yesterday.

We were having a prod around his generator at the back of the farm shed. It's not cranking quick enough to start. We didn't manage to fix it but I took some photos of it anyway. It's a weird starting system, where the generator/alternator part of it works as a starter then switches over once the engine is running. It can even be set to auto, he says that when it's working properly and it detects more than 40W being drawn from the battery, it fires up the engine.

Is the decompressor working? I think it is set to hold the valve open when the stop is operated so is already "decompressed" when start is operated. No way it will spin fast enough to start if not decompressed.

( Decompressor holds a valve open so no compression until the engine is spun up and then suddenly the valve is allowed to shut and bongk-bongk- bongk- bong- bong- bong off it goes)

Yeah, but you only use the decompressor when hand starting.

Usually electric starting cranks against compression. (Unless you are trying to manually help a marginal battery get the set away).

That was one of my first thoughts, but I rebulit the carb using a new one from the rebuild kit - didn't make it any better or worse :(

Went to the Lakeland Motor Museum today, highly recommended. The cafe is great as well. I would post pics but forgot to put memory card in my camera. :-(

Had a sFTP yesterday in the P6B.

(Secure FTP = FTP in the safety of your own driveway.)

Drove home from church in near-100 degree heat, 1970s aircon yammering away doing it's job, temp gauge on the line between white and green.

Let passengers out, then restarted car 2 mins later to run the car up the drive into my rose-arbour carport.

Got out of car, ready to lock the door when I heard a funny noise; steam came from all around the bonnet, and then a river of coolant under the car.

Too hot to even open the bl**dy bonnet, so left it for a few hours.

Later in the day, after an afternoon sleep, went out to check, filled the radiator, ran the engine up to temp and saw coolant squirting out near the water pump.  Oh great, says I.

But hang on, thinks I, a failed water pump in one of these means a hot engine and a cold radiator, but the top hose is really hot.  Don't think that could be it.

So, with the engine really cold this morning, stick my hand in to feel around, and bingo!

There's a short 4" piece of hose from the water pump to the pipe that goes under the inlet manifold, and that has a 2" long split along its underside.

Result!  Just got to go to the Australian equivalent of Halfords and find something that will fit.  Means Boxing Day sales mind you, but I can live with that.

Does that have the RV8 engine in it ? There is a similar hose on the 3.9  Fuel injected engine in the same place - about 4inches long with a 90 degree bend in it. 4 days before leaving thwe UK to emigrate (about 11 years ago)  Left London headed for the lake district (parents) at about 8pm to say last goodbyes and drop off the contents of the Range Rover. Got as far as Luton services when that hose let go. Got transported up to lake district in a covered flat bed normally used to recover Rolls and Bentleys, as RR Classic and contents too heavy for normal flatbed. Result - 250 miles at about 15mpg = mega saving  on fuel. New hose cost about 4 quid. I still have one left as sitting in flatbed cab I ordered as many as I could find with next day delivery, so could fix before leaving RR for Dad to sell for me.  If it might fit and you want it it's yours - just PM me.

Thanks, but no need.  Yes, that's the one.  I chose one for an HQ Holden at Autobarn yesterday and that fitted well enough.

Staying with the in laws over Christmas in Germany. Think the bratwurst has got to me as I've agreed the purchase of another car ( Its nearer Dursley than Dortmund mind) and comes with more than its EU quota of frilly edges...

I like this era of C-class, I regret not buying a similar one for £150 that Red5 pointed out to me not long after my E-class got crashed into.

Got back this afternoon from visiting family in Somerset for Christmas.  538 miles in the Carina E, using £55 of pez.  That car may be boring but fuck me is it reliable.

Had a modern-shite-gasm on the way there on the A14 as I was briefly sandwiched between a brown MG6 behind me and a new-shape (the one they only made for 10 minutes) Saab 9-5 in front.  Also got treated to a 30-minute full-on rant from my uncle as to how shit his 2012 Golf TDI estate is, and how he's never owned a car with so many niggly faults.  I drove it, it was pleasant enough with plenty of poke but the gearbox felt like second gear synchro was on the way out - bit worrying with only 28K on the clock.  Apparently after a long motorway run the linkage also partially seizes making it almost impossible to find first.  Oh, and the sat nav map freezes up after about 10 minutes.  If only everything were as reliable as a Volkswagen.

Also stopped off near Chippenham to pay for a three-headed monster.  I wanted to collect over the New Year weekend, but owners were abroad, so given that I was passing within about 800 yards (as the crow flies at least) of their front door on the way down, I made the short detour to do the paperwork and collect the keys - advantage is that I can then pick it up at my leisure without having to fit round anyone else.

Is that a six-speed Golf? I think they based the synchromesh design spec on French caliper bolts.

Just gone 2am here in BG,and we've just felt the edge of an earthquake that's gone off under Romania....

Nothing serious but enough to rattle some windows

Yup, that's the one.

That's not an area I think of when thinking of earthquakes.

Inadvertently drove past the rail part of Shitefest 2016 yesterday. Got totally lost trying to find Hughenden Manor, and now have 1/3 of Oxfordshire's mud up the sides of my car. On the plus side, the railway was heaving!

Somewhere I want to travel around one day. Have you lived there long? Maybe I'll ping another thread elsewhere with the daft questions.

I saw 5 short eared Owls in the field behind my house this morning. Couldn't get a decent picture of them as it was foggy but this is what they look like. I'm not an authority on birds but I believe they come here from Russia.
