Didn't get a chance to do much fettling this weekend, although I did give the Toyota a wash and hoover ready for the drive down to Somerset at Christmas (when no doubt it'll be pissing with rain and the car will get filthy again).

I also scored two batteries off Gumtree for a tenner each - an 075 which has gone on the red Rover, and an 063 which has gone on the Innocenti, whose battery I'd nicked for the Mazda. So all the fleet has working batteries now apart from the Volvo and the A35, neither of which move very much.

I also picked up this:

Drove it back from near Peatboghorror this afternoon. The bastard cock mong sat nav spat me onto the A1M and like a twat I didn't realise what it was doing until it was too late, so the journey home ended up being 20 miles longer than it should have as I went via the A14 and A11. Van never missed a beat though. It's a 2-litre twin cam petrol so it doesn't hang about - coming off the roundabouts on the A11 I was pissing off some much newer vans. Doesn't seem that much thirstier than a DI either - the fuel gauge is woefully inaccurate as per usual on Transits, but as far as I can make out it seems to have done about 25mpg, which isn't too bad considering I never manage to get more than about 30 out of a DI and I was driving in a manner which a DI would have been incapable of.

It has some grot round the arches which will need looking at for the ticket in a month's time, but the chassis doesn't look bad from a quick glance. Everything seems to work apart from the stereo which needs a code (I got hopeful when I found the audio manual in the paperwork, but some fecker has torn out the code card), and it has PAS which is a vast improvement on my last petrol Transit, which was like opening a sluice gate - not ideal when you've overdone it on a wet roundabout and the rear is in the process of overtaking the front.

It has seats in the back at the moment but I reckon I'll probably rip most of those out and just use it as a van. If it doesn't need too much for its test I might keep it for a while - it's even LEZ compliant.

Oh, and I might shortly be becoming the proud* owner of a three-headed monster, although probably not until after Christmas.

Transit forum will do you a code for nowt. Ping the m number when you get a minute. I've got a rear wheel cyl and a few bits left of my old Di somewhere if you want them like a brand new (scorched) wheel and tyre brakes etc.

Corr, I missed that the other day. Is it on the log book as a mini-bus? My insurance has knobbed me off from having them now (and camper vans) but one of these would be ideal.

In boring news I remembered when my mate owned the 406 saloon I now have, he used to fold the seats down and jam pushbikes in. Stupid things like that fascinate me and another 406 saloon I had recently didn't seem to have that option. Where they only on certain models or something?

It can happen, Audi made a folding rear seat optional on the early A4. Ours has one, but PBK/Bub's one doesn't.

Drinking whilst taking Gabapentin ( prescribed ) is erm....interesting !

I'd liken it to your first try of Thunderbird wine/Merrydown cider or MD20/20 in a park at the age of 14

My 1999 facelifted A4 had folding rear seats. It was the 1.8T quattro sport model with (almost) all the toys, though.

Tramodol/cocodamol plus wine = good nights sleep.

They're OK but I'm not sure about their longevity

Wuv reminds me. I need the code for the ZX's stereo. Anyone know where I could get it? I managed to find somewhere to give me the code for the XM, but can't remember where.

I'm sure there's a torrent full of the code generators somewhere on a hdd I have. What's the model series of the radio and the serial number?

The 205 picked up a screw in a rear tyre a couple of days ago, too close to the sidewall to repair.  Due to availability issues of 14" rubber and the need to get mobile rapidly (Blingo's having its rear end torn off tomorrow), it no longer has matching Barums.

No, my friends - one corner is now held off the ground by that shiters' Chinese vinyl deathring of choice, the Landsail Foo Kyu Ditchfinder.  A full report will follow, should I live long enough.

It's been nice knowing you...

Don't sling the tyre with the screw in the shoulder, your local tyre fitter can't fix it but a proper tyre repair workshops can with a vulcanised major repair so long as the screw hasn't ripped the inner sidewall to shreds or the tyre has been run flat.

It might not be cost effective for mainstream common sizes unless the tyre is newish, last time i had a minimal major shoulder repair done it cost me a tenner cash job, plus removal refitting for a drink, but i do know the lads there from old days, tyre repair workshops don't always offer removal and refitting so you'll need to check first.

Northants has several of these specialists, there is also one in Ely, unsure about the rest of the country cos i've been out of the tyre repair game for 40odd years.

You had the radio out to check it's not been written on the case?

Well, another FTP this morning. (Mrs Beard meeting a friend to exchange presents 40 miles away.)

After having the starter motor replaced on the MG ZT on Wednesday, the Honda Accord failed to start at 8 am today. Battery flat. Honda had a new alternator earlier this year plus a recent new battery. Battery was supplied and fitted by RAC last year (after the old, original one died leaving us stranded due to the car being an automatic)

An hour or so on a 4 amp charger was enough to fire the car up. Multimeter showed 14.4 Volts with the engine running, but only 12.3 with the engine off. Battery is toast then methinks. Under warranty but no longer with the RAC and can't find receipt, so not much chance of warranty being honoured then!

Mrs Beard took the MG ZT instead....

She hasn't driven it before now.

She hasn't driven a car with a manual gearbox for a while*.....

As you paid them for the battery they will have sent you a receipt and should still have the details on their system tagged to your membership number, Ring the buggers !!!!

Tried ringing, but on hold for 40 mins, still no answer so gave up! The main reason I left the RAC TBH. They just don't answer the phone! Even when we broke down it took over half an hour before they answered the call. Just rubbish customer service IMHO. We are now with the AA...Time will tell if they are any better. Although it was a lot cheaper for the same cover.
