Aye, they 'aint cheap, I think its £60 an hour in labour Usually I go for cheaper independent places but the car always leaves Cornhill functional, not always the case elsewhere!

I've heard good things about Ewens. My mum bought a new Civic from Macrae and Dick recently, they've been taken over by Park's and they're fucking shit, not resetting the tyre pressure monitor when they fitted winter tyres to it, not providing her with a V5. Maybe they always were shit.

A few months ago, a horrible "tick tick tick" noise was coming from my P6B's dashboard.

Then the speedo needle wobbled or stopped working or something, so out with the cable inner and angle drives and off to the instrument repairer.

New inner, but worryingly, he said both angle drives were perfectly fine, no need to rebuild.

Fast forward to yesterday morning, and the speedo stopped dead and the "tick tick tick" noise was back.

Oh, goody, the speedo head itself needs repair.

Just another item in the life of using a 40-year old car as a daily.

Shit Reno with the 1.2 shite late 90s donkey did 503 km on 33 litres

Certainly wouldn't buy one with this engine and change steering wheel

Got 'em out, and the angle drive at the speedo end won't turn properly, and catches badly.

Nothing wrong with it, my @r$e.

I'll have to take it somwhere else. Can't do it myself.

Got the C3 back from the garage this morning - suitably eye watering bill but I just don't have the time to do the work myself

It'll be for sale tonight via the usual channels (not in here because I assume it'd go down like a lead balloon :D)

Had a bit of a play about with some of the cars yesterday, including getting the Talbot out for a little run. I think it adds a bit of class to the neighbourhood.

Many moons ago I scored a 90deg drive in a scrappy.... seem to recall an Austin1100 iirc. Well made and interesting device/execution.

I've owned the Volvo for 13 years today, which is more or less half of the time it has been on the road. It's done pretty well during that time, as the only 'fail to proceed' in nature breakdown repairs it has needed since I've owned have been two replacement alternators, two replacement batteries and a fuel pump relay. All other repairs and servicing have been what you'd expect a car of its ilk to require over a decade and a bit. Not bad going for 132,000 miles' worth of motoring in a car which only cost £805 and was a daily driver for many years:

All it needs at the moment is a new MOT, as the last one ran out while I was in Berlin last month and I've not been able to get a new one put on it for various time, weather, logistical and motivational reasons. Hopefully, it will have a new one this coming Tuesday, as I can't see any reason why it shouldn't pass. All being well, I intend to keep it going until at least 2020 8)

I have used the BGD again today. It ran perfectly and didn't annoy me or play up or do anything wrong at all. It behaved in exactly the same manner on Friday (apart from the flat battery which was probably my fault) so that's two days and two decent journeys where it was truly lovely to own/drive/swan about in.

Obviously, this happy state of affairs will not continue! So do I get it washed, dried and put away under blankets and tailored cover quick sharp before she can fail or carry on using her and see how long it lasts?

Also, I (yes that's me, myself I) repaired the damage I did to the rear bumper a month or two ago when I clunked the garage door frame. I was distracted by the dog barking, the sun was in my eyes, I was worried about the proximity of the front to the shelving, I am a moron that can't drive. Delete as you see fit :)  I did touch the paint chips in but the result was a bit lumpy and 'not quite the thing old chap' so today, while the sun shone upon my woolly hat, I sanded (with great care and using tiny movements - like wanking a hamster sort of effort) the bumpy paint down and then polished it with cream bathroom cleaner then good old Autoglym SRP and the result is so acceptable that even my OCD can bare to live with it.

Went down the road to see a Smart Roadster that a local garage was selling. Way over what I wanted to pay (I'm looking at sub-£1.5k), but I wanted to sit in one and see what they're like before bidding randomly one on eBay, winning it, collecting it and then deciding I don't liking it! Also I find its good to look at a supposedly good (and expensive)/not-totally-shagged example so you know roughly what to expect/aim for.

This is the one:

Was told it wasn't there and was at a local sunroof specialist place having a new roof runner fitted as it was leaking! I know the Smart Roadsters aren't the best for being watertight (by any stretch) and even the dealer admitted that too. Not a good start in my search!

So i get this phone call this morning from a old friend, the same old friend who i bought the Sierra off and has a few other old cars hidden about, apparently the barn which the grey Sierra was stored in for 9 years has got to be cleared in the next 2 months as the landowner has sold it for some kind high cost baby day care centre to be built, everything needs to go, am i still interested in the Morris Ital van at the back?...

I think we all know the answer to that! Hopefully I'll be getting it in the next month or so.

According to the chap who shifted my Dolomite 1300 the row of lock-ups it currently resides in used to be used to owned by a garage across the road which no longer exists. They used to build kit cars based on the Hillman Hunter and used to buy parts from him fairly often back in the day.

Anybody know what the kit car might have been? I know AS is a hive for obscure, mostly awful, kit car knowledge...

Thanks, must have missed them before or forgot! That does not look look at all bad. Being indoors can only be a good thing too. When it's emptied and had a hose run over it it will look better again.

GRS, Hunter based.

Similar to Dutton Sierra and Rickman Ranger. Looked well engineered to me but they chose the wrong base vehicle.

Not that many sold, I saw the prototype on show once, think it was at the  NEC motor show.

Ginetta, I'd forgot about that.

That's a good thought.

Possibly common to many cars of the era.

I got a call from my sister this evening, she's stuck on a roundabout and her cars broken down.

So I go up there with my dad to have a look, luckily it's not far from home, turns out the car still runs but it's lost all drive!

It's pitch black out there and I can't see anything but the engines running fine, clutch feels ok and it goes into gears but when the clutch comes up there's absolutely nothing there. Just like running it and revving the engine in neutral. I tried not using the clutch and just selecting gears with the engine running and still nothing. Drive shafts both look ok too.

When it's in gear and you try to drive off it just sits there revving but there's a slight rumble/grinding sound from somewhere.

RAC came out and had a look but couldn't sort it so they recovered it in the end as it's dark, raining and cold it was the only real way to get it shifted.

I think the gearbox or diff might of shit itself myself? Have to see tomorrow, it's been recovered straight to a local garage anyway as I don't have time at the moment. Hopefully they'll be able to have a look ASAP.

Posted

Civic did that after it snapped it's driveshaft as I was pulling onto a roundabout. Rumble might be half the driveshaft spinning around and not doing anything. I initially thought my gearbox/diff had blow up.

Could be as simple as a driveshaft coming partly out of the box. Looks like its still in place at a glance but the splines are not engaged, or the splines have stripped.

Could also be proper fucked.

Cheers guys.

It 'looks' ok in that respect. But it's dark, wet and was sat on the side of a roundabout so not easy to see anything so it's a definite possibility.

Apparently it drove fine until she reached the car park in town. There was a funny noise as she set off then about 10 miles up the road she pulled onto this roundabout and it pulled away but then there was no drive at all and a burning smell.

Annoying thing is that she's just had a new exhaust system put on it and a few other bits too. Sodding thing.

It's a 54 plate 1.25 Fiesta, so if it is screwed it's no big loss.

A friends 1.9 Tdi Fabia lost all drive turning right at the lights, when i saw it all the bolts had come out of the left driveshaft. She had had a wheel bearing put in by a local garage a week/500miles earlier so she suggested they might like to recover and repair it. After pleading it was Saturday PM and they were shut they agreed this was good idea, as a sometimes angry redhead she can be fairly persausive! :-D

Finally sorted the Corsa ABS problems. Got it to a garage who hooked up to Tech 2 (we haven't got it) and we ended up replacing the n/s/r hub as the abs reluctor ring is built into it.

Two more motors leaving soon so 'treated' myself to a high mileage Berlingo van that I bought in the dark without a test drive.

Do it trigger, its crying out to be resurrected. Didnt you agree a price a while back when you bought the sierra?

Yes we did but the brother who actually owns the van is getting a bit greedy i think, the other brother is keen that i have it though and we spoke about £700? Not sure if thats too much or not really but its a 41000 mile van and these seem to be fetching strong money now.
