At lunchtime, I hand cranked the 2CV into life and acknowledged that I still really need to buy a battery for it.

However, it then drove me all the way to Birmingham nae bother, so who's to complain? Was a generally lovely drive, bar Brum City Centre. I should have ignored my sat navigation as local knowledge was already telling me it was a bad idea.

We reached the halls, then had to wait to get in for over an hour, for no obvious reason. Eventually, we got in

Wow!

I think I'm going to like this show. Also spoke to the owner of a really nice Renault 5 - and early floor changer just like my old dash change one.

Not a good couple of weeks for cars.  After the Puma's PAS leak last week I had a frustrating FTP in the Hiace today - I stopped off at Asda on my way home earlier today and when I got back in, the ignition lock had jammed.  After 10 minutes of fiddling around I could just about get the steering lock off but it wouldn't turn any further.  Luckily, I was only a short walk from my house so went back, got some tools and took some bits of dashboard off before disconnecting the ignition barrel, enabling me to start it with a screwdriver.

As I had a day off, I was planning to pull out the seats and fit the spiffy new carpet this afternoon too, that flooring is nasty, guess the van had other ideas.  Also, behold my checkstrap mod - the previous owner was a roofer and that's a very substantial roofing nail replacing a pin.  I'll get a new one at some point when funds allow, the strap doesn't really do a lot anyway.

I took it home, fortunately only a 2 minute drive away, I had to hold the ignition key to stop it springing back and engaging the steering lock, hardly ideal.  A further half hour spent with various tools and levels of violence and gentle persuasion didn't produce any results either, I tried spraying WD40 in it but all that happened was a lot of grey muck came out of it so I guess it just got too worn - probably a pin dropped out but anyway, it's knackered.  It won't turn enough to allow the security pin to be pushed in so the lock is stuck in there for now.  Fortunately, the side door and passenger door are both on seperate keys anyway so at some point I'll get hold of a full matching set of locks and keys off a newer scrap Hiace and change the lot.

I hobbled it over to my tame local mechanic who fortunately is only a very short drive from me and left it with him to puzzle over, he phoned earlier and as expected he's had to resort to cutting the steering lock off.  I'll go pick it up tomorrow morning, apparently one of the old keys it came with is now taped to the steering column to keep the immobiliser happy so at least it can be used, I'll just have to hope that the low crime rate around here stays low!

I'm sure a "respected" journalist could source something whilst attending the UK's largest classic car show?

I watched Mrs 6C drive away in the Sovereign S2 this morning as it was her last day on her present work contract and she wanted something different to drive for her trip up the M40.

Renner build quality at its best - I have a 65 plate Twingo while the Duster is in..... gear stick gaiter keeps unclipping itself and flapping around!

Sprightly old giffer, immaculately turned out, attempting to cross a local road by my house...

Sets off, with his walking stick, (I have already clocked him) and slow well down...

He sees me and half twists to scuttle back to the pavement. I wave him away over the road so he totters on across. He waves his thanks as he gets to far kerb and then rolls his eyes over the car [ToMM©] and gives a wide smile, wink & nod!!

Nice

Instead of the usual 13 reg Transit we have at work, I've been pootling about in the 16 reg Fiesta van.

It's like a bloody go kart in comparison, and it's actually not that bad. Base models FTW!

Just picked up the Hiace, steering lock has been cut off and zip-tied to the column with one of the transponder keys taped to it so it's now completely usable, if somewhat pikey with half the dashboard removed and wires on show.  On the plus side, I now have keyless start, which wasn't ever available on Hiaces so it's proper modern now...although I'm not sure most cars with that feature come with a handy screwdriver wedged in the ashtray as a substitute.

I don't know what car that is, do you?  Popped up on Twitter's front page when I was signing in and is the album cover for https://twitter.com/YG new album (because I'm crediting the source today).

Still no news on my missing Mondeo.  I'm going to lose this game of chicken aren't I? I'm just going to have to phone up and ask about it.  I know it sounds like I am being a bit of a dick about it, but since I'm not currently in desperate need of it, I thought I'd just do an experiment to see how long it took to ring me.

Every single place I take my car to says they'll phone me when it's done - none of them ever do.

It would be more truthful if they just said "we'll wait until your curiosity gets so bad you can't resist phoning us".  I know it doesn't matter in the scheme of things, and they could have lost my number I suppose.

It's back, they rang.  Maybe one of them is one here :) It seems like the right kind of place, they are gr4 to deal with and do a good job.

^^^^^^Yip,last of the RWD Blueys,

Fab car but you could hear them rust!

Funnily enough there is one I see quite often the paint (maroon) is faded to buggery but no visible rust, it's usually driven by a 300 year old bloke.

After much to-ing and fro-ing, got work to agree to let me have a Cactus. Evidently it's much harder to 'downgrade' than 'upgrade'.

After the escort's sad demise, I was more uplifted to finally get photos of the other local Skoda Favorit. Yep, just 250 left and there's two in my one horse town! It has very low miles, but is hanging. It won't be around much longer I don't think...not a note on windscreen one. It comes from express garage on original dealer plates which was the local Skoda dealer.

I'm helping a mate with a project John Deere 3130 from 1974. I am the brains behind the rewire, good job it's prettty basic though I may be after help when we get to the remote alternator  regulator. It was smartly repainted a couple of years ago and stored inside since but the owner has started to do some metal work between the dash and bonnet stalling my task.

Braved west London Hounslow area at 7.30 am to get the o/s track rod replaced on the merc. Made my friend a cup of tea and 30 minutes and £55 later was back on the way to work.

Had to see off a dozy blond on the m3 from sunbury( no idea of gender) in a BMW 5 series estate who seemed glued to my blind spot- so after a mile I got fed up - they were on the phone, so a quick spurt of acceleration took me to limit plus 40% for a few seconds to get rid of them. At which point they then shot past ( I was always in lane one) at Mach 110mph. Weird!

Now to merit in bagshot tomorrow to get the alignment completed.

Have booked it on the eurotunnel in may for a trip to Normandy as well,

I am borrowing a Caravelle T25 for the weekend. It is a 2.1 water boxer GL with automatic transmission and power steering. I had to free off a sticky throttle, but will be able to do a full road test tomorrow.

It would be really, really useful if I could sell it on Sunday! Anyone want it? I reckon a good deal could be achieved.

"Go down to Herne Bay, get a Skoda today. From Express...Express Garage!"
