The new news 24 thread

I never know where to post what I see on the Irish site donedeal.ie; not sure if any of the eBay threads are, so I'll stick them here (or start a dedicated thread?)

Just put them in the relevant eBay thread. It covers all sales/auction platforms.

Parkers which is a good guide for real world fuel consumption reckons 30MPG average for an automatic Omega 2.5TD estate.

Jesus fuck, the petrol ex SVM split arse plated 960 24v does 27 mpg in mythical 'long run' mode.

My 2.2 auto goona is saying it's doing 37.something,and that's with a goosed thermostat a d possibly needing an oil change... I'd look for fuel leaks! Can you spend an afternoon tracing the pipe work and hoping it's blatent?

Yesterday my brother bought a new motorbike. He had been saving for months to replace his knackered one and had picked one with the best economy to try to save, as cash is always tight. He picked it up at 5pm, drove over to show me, on his way home. We chatted for about half an hour, then he headed home, stopping at waitrose for some bread.

He emerged 3 minutes later (7:15pm) to find some bastard had stolen it! Apparently cameras caught them doing it, but wearing helmets. Several people saw it going up and down the road without a number plate. He was then stuck at Waitrose and has now lost his work transport as he traded the old one in. He will presumably eventually get an insurance payout, but has to pay £600 excess and is now in quite a hole.  I have lent him the Clio, as I have the stepway coming imminently.

We then spent several hours searching the area, as it is probably kids and dumped somewhere when it ran out of fuel. Sadly it is probably burned by now or on the local camp site, where no laws apply.

Really winds me up how we all have to work so hard to get things, but scum can just take them and leave us with nothing. Surely 2 and a quarter hours is the shortest ownership of a motorbike?

Mate of mine bought a second hand Transalp and wrote it off on a diesel spill 5 minutes after picking it up.

What a shit situation, otherwise. Sorry to hear it.

DW-,I seem to remember those beemer diesels were never very good on fuel but very refined and powerful for their time - can't have it all ways I don't suppose

Finally managed to do a brim to brim calculation on the Omega. 32mpg. That's rubbish! I'm pretty sure there's still a fuel leak, possibly on the return line near the tank. I think I need to get that sorted. Computer reckons 39mpg.

I used to average 18mpg from the V6 running about if that makes you feel better, the petrol computer lies as well.

Our vectra will do 40 on a run but round the doors it's high 20's. Not sure it's economical enough to justify having over a petrol.

Just been offered this cheap, 1.6 auto with possible hgf/water leak. Should I bother taking it?

Isn't this the same as Ghosty's?

Sorry to hear about your bro's woes. Was it locked to an immovable object?

Shopping in Waitrose? Mibbie that's why the cash is always tight?

He goes in Waitrose half a mile from his house regularly,  and buys all the bargains at the end of the day (they close at 8pm) as they are much cheaper than the nearby Tesco! I didn't believe him, but have seen it myself when he comes out with a big basket  full of fruit for 50p !   Unfortunately, that loaf of bread ended up a lot dearer!

He did say that the staff were very helpful and checked CCTV etc, , the manager even gave him a 4 pack of beer as he "looked like he needed it"!

On a run that involves no braking, and only dual carriageway or motorway, and the cruise control set at either 70 mph or 50 mph (road works) I achieve 31 MPG. in a petrol 3.2 V6 ohmegawd.

At one point on Monday I managed to get the trip distance plus the range to add up to 520 miles,

Unfortunately as soon as you add in the warm up cycle, some roundabouts, some traffic lights, a little stop start jam, acceleration from rest, it struggles above 26 MPG. which is about 19p a mile.

And the combined range and trip distances plummet about 30 mile every cold start you do.

Such that I filled up on Tuesday showing a range of 450 miles, and having done 5 journeys of 15 miles each (75 Miles) the range is now showing at 230 Miles.

I've taken to using the Mx5 around town.

Yeah, except mine has a grille stuck on.

HGF is an easy job on these and gasket sets are about £30. They're pretty decent things - I paid £300 for one with HGF so if it's less than that I'd say go for it.

I like the look of that better than my one, tbh, I'd quite like a white one, prefacelift too.... If the head gasket was OK and I knew some more details about condition, I'd consider offering a swap.

Went out earlier and there by my bin was a big black plastic case. 'How odd' I quothe!  So I took it inside and had a look and it's a 24v cordless drill with all the bits. Charged it as it was a bit flat and it seems to work fine.

Anyone want it? I just bought a new cordless drill and don't use one enough let alone two!

Remember that rover 800 ad where the slick haired, pinstripe suited German executives were subtitled being ever so slightly impressed on first sight of the fastback?

Well SWMBO ( German and basically the CEO of our family) had a few choice German words when she saw it for the first time this morning. No subtitles needed shall we say!

I was more drawn to the Suzuki S-Cross in that picture, probably because it's in what looks like a metallic BL colour.

Following knee issues (see grump thread), I had to sack off the idea of getting the 0730 Belfast - Cairnryan boat this morning. €47 down on the deal.

[Just to rub it in, Stena Line text has just come through "We Hope you enjoyed your sailing". No I fucking didn't/couldn't.]

So will venture outside and see if the bike is still an option or whether I'm going SailRail to Carlisle.

That's someones new car actually, she was telling us about it the other day. I'll pap a better picture, it looks green in the flesh.

Does anyone fancy going to Le Mans for the 24hr in June. My mate was supposed to be coming, but has now sold his Chevy. So  we have one spare campsite pass for Chateau du Houx. (It is a quiet little site right next to Houx and a short walk to the Start line / village) What you get is a space big enough for a car and caravan/tent. There is no limit to the amount of people you can cram into the car but a mini bus would be frowned upon. This site sold out instantly as usual and there is a good chance you could get an electric hook up. I will be there from the Sunday before the race until the Monday after so could save you a spot if you are coming late. I am after £150 for the ticket which believe me is cheap for a campsite that is even remotely near the circuit. You will need entrance tickets (Which you can buy on the gate or I can order for you 82 euro for the whole race)  and to sort your own ferry on top.

Warning - it will piss down relentlessly all day anywhere within an 80 mile radius of Leicester as I have ordered the springs and shocks to put the Pumpkin back to a normal ride height - delivery (and my plan to do the job) tomorrow.  I can't do it inside because other immobile unfinished projects are still filling the garage.

Just in case anyone needed an accurate weather forecast.

Finally bought the paint to respray the 18.

It came in at an eye watering £134 for 3l of paint and 1.5l of hardener which is probably more than the car is worth...

In other news, my Mondeo seems to have gone AWOL.  Been at the garage nearly 14 days now - last heard of a week ago today when it was "nearly finished".  No skin off my nose now the Pumpkin is out of death trap mode (for now) - he's not going to get paid unless/until he rings me and if he never gives it back I'm still up on the deal.  My Ma said "did you take a note of the speedo reading?" as if he's going to be spending 2 weeks driving it.  Frankly, if he's been to Croatia and back on a banger rally in it, good luck to him.

I fixed the wifi at this hotel in 10mins by explaining how Aruba wireless controllers work & how one AP can loose connection to a DHCP server, they've given me free premium (ie not just in the bar) wifi to say thanks so I'm sat in my room posting shite here...

Another toy! Have you got a thread on it yet? That does look really nice.
