The sun came out, and I'd had enough of being sat at my desk (having been working since 8am). So, I went for a drive! Battery was dead, and the brakes were seized up due to rust - was wet last time she was out! Started on the handle straight away thankfully.

Must get around to buying a new battery. This time next week, though, we'll probably both be at the NEC, setting up the 2CVGB stand. Feel free to come and laugh at the horrible, unpainted wheels, missing side stripes and bootlid and rear wings that still need painting to match the fronts.

Still searching for heated mirror glasses for the 200 - Rimmers have them but a pair will cost me going on for £90. No breaker seems to have them either, which is annoying.

Worth any number of Deutsche Marques?

The CR-V wasn't as bad to drive as expected, it's just the passenger seat that's rock solid and terrible for bad backs. Driver's is OK, not ideal but decent enough I suppose. It actually goes OK, steering is decent, and it doesn't feel big. My only issues from a driver's perspective are the abysmal MPGs (to be expected of a 2.0 pez in something Disco sized), and the brakes. Pedal felt OK, but it didn't seem to actually stop the car. Not sure how to describe it, but there was no real sense of urgency, and you really had to ask yourself 'is it stopping?'.

Rear passenger comfort is OK, but the rear suspension really throws you around.

None of the seats actually hold you in place, and on the twisty bits you get thrown all over the place, the leather is really slidey.

If you've got normal mirrors you could stick heating pads on the back of the glass if its practical. These would do:

I have one spare manual mirror at the moment. I'm going to keep looking - it's annoying as the mirrors work 100%, but the driver's glass has a crack right down the middle, and the passenger one is bollocksed, the only bit you can see through points at the road. Good for seeing how close to lane markers you are but nothing else.

You can't even buy stick on glasses from Halfords, you have to order them in... yet you can buy paint for fuggin Allegros off the shelf.

Why didn't I think of looking for s/h mirrors instead of breaker vehicles?

Armed with part numbers from Rimmers I've managed to find a source of NOS driver's mirror glasses for £17.59/offers, so I'll see what I can get one of those for.

Passenger glasses are at least £27.50 and seem to be harder to come by so I've chucked £18.99 at a complete used mirror in the correct grey plastic instead.

My brother sent me a picture of me with my first car. I only have one other photo of it.

My Mk2 had square lights, I always wanted round lights they are much more sporty.

Round lights were the poverty pack on transits of that era. Virtually none have survived

That escort survived till December 1990 though!

Drove the Omega to Birmingham today. It is quite good at mile munching. I've abandoned it there while I head to London for a couple of days. Two days of nothing but public transport! Train journeys not as a collection caper! Heresy!

HOLY SHIT THAT HAS BEEN AN INSANE FEW MONTHS.

So, er, Hi.

Anyone got any thoughts on Honda HR-Vs? My C5 Tourer got modified by a Seat Ibiza.

(To expand: relationship imploded. Work imploded. Cars imploded. Relationships started. Then sort of imploded with lots of work put in to try and prevent that. Work imploded in new ways. Thought there was massive exciting hope at the end of all this after being very skeptical; turns out the cake was a lie. Hope imploded, life imploded some more, relationship imploded massively. And then someone ran into the car it turns out I couldn't afford in the first place and is the kind of car that still costs quite a bit to buy but is worth half of fuck-all in the trade. There were some good bits in the middle of all this, of course, and I did get to say Hi to a few people at the auction a while back).

Finally managed to do a brim to brim calculation on the Omega. 32mpg. That's rubbish! I'm pretty sure there's still a fuel leak, possibly on the return line near the tank. I think I need to get that sorted. Computer reckons 39mpg.

I used to have a 1994 143bhp BMW 525 Tds manual which I think is a similar engine and it never did 40mpg even driving to the middle of France. Locally it did 32/34, brim to brim figs with no leaks. Auto's are worse I'm told.

Parkers which is a good guide for real world fuel consumption reckons 30MPG average for an automatic Omega 2.5TD estate.

It has finally clicked in my head.  There's a few people on my Twitter feed that I follow because of interesting car content and who follow me back, presumably for the same reason.  Thing is, because I live under a rock, I hardly ever know if someone is telly-famous or not until someone else gets excited about it and are confused as to why I'm not. So with that tweet above and the excitement from Mike's Dad who is a Turbo Pickers fan, something in my brain went CLUNK and now I understand.  It's like when I discovered Jonny Smith isn't just an interesting bloke with a really fast Enfield Electric, he's actually quite a well known personality.

So, the chap I sold it to is one of the mechanics in the background on the show, the name I couldn't remember was Adam, not Andy.  I also gather that essentially when it's not tv-time they run as a normal restoration type business and he works there so, yeah.  Anyway, thought you'd all like to know, perhaps it's exciting news for some of you?

Just been offered this cheap, 1.6 auto with possible hgf/water leak. Should I bother taking it?

I had it from '86 to early '89. 1.3 popular plus with a third gear that screamed at you.

Travelled up and down to a Reading in it a few times though, over 500 miles each way. I once got back to the car park in Reading to an empty space. It was found by the police later that night on the other side of town, none the worse for wear. Looked like someone couldn't be bothered with the bus so jumped in the easiest car to rob of all time. I took the rotor arm off every morning after that.

Today I've had two new Toyo Proxy tyres fitted to the E36 and the garage told me the front pads are getting low but I've already got a new set of disks and pads sitting on top of the wardrobe waiting to go on once the weather improves.

Also I ordered a new camshaft sensor today for the car as I'm getting an error code on my cheap code reader and I've also got to paint the inside of the new wing with some red lead plus schutz before giving it a coat of black eggshell spray which I got free the other week before I fit it on the motor not that anyone would notice the one small rust bubble which is smaller than a quarter of my little fingernail on the original wing.

Hopefully then I think the car is then back to as new again till I find something else to do on it.

Also I had an all day appointment yesterday at the hospital which was about a 90 mile round trip and seeing I had a dodgy tyre I was given the keys to my fathers 2005 A class Merc and have to say I was more than impressed with it and it has buttons on the steering wheel and a stereo plus heater I couldn't work out.

I hope by driving a modern doesn't make me sell my Chod collection and come over all lease hire.

I never know where to post what I see on the Irish site donedeal.ie; not sure if any of the eBay threads are, so I'll stick them here (or start a dedicated thread?)

If cheap, yes. I advise caution. I bought mine with a possible hgf/water leak and initially it did only have a water leak, which then became OMGHGF. So... could get pricey. Remember these are still worth fuck all too. Make sure you don't A-frame it with a HAPPYJOYWAGON in the rain.
