Jags aren't special in my mind - especially the wrecked cheap dross old car folk talk about in hushed, reverential tones. XJ40s and X300s are just tragic relics.

 

The new ones bore me senseless too, although it pleases me JLR is making such a go of things and selling shit-tons of vehicles. It clearly knows what the buying public want even if to me the F PACE looks like someone half arsedly stretched a Mk1 XJ6 grille over the front of a generic SUV from GTA 5.

 

I'm not their market. I'm sure JLR cares* what I think. Fair play to 'em.

Jags are actually pretty annoying.  I really want to like them, there's many Jags I love the look and idea of, but they all just end up being a bit crap when you actually experience them in person.  Definitely a don't-meet-your-heroes brand for me.

I think it applies to a lot of car marques/models. For example I really understand and get Saabs and love them. However there are a lot of people out there who really dont like them. Likewise Rover 75's. I personally don't get the appeal but there are plenty of others who do.

 

It's not necessarily delusion that someone really likes a particular marque or enjoys their products. Just different cars cater for different tastes.

 

The phrase each to their own springs to mind.

No, I hear you. And I hear romance of rust (magnificent rustbucket) man, I know his comment wasn't a dig. 

 

It's more the crashing of plates and needles being ripped off the record in an increasing number of places when I air my 'XJ40s and X300s really aren't all that' opinion which makes me think I'm in the minority. Isn't that part of what makes AS great, the feeling that 'you're not alone?'

 

I wish JLR all the success, however; that it's offending so many stuffy enthusiasts who covet its older, tragic 90s cars makes me think it'll be just fine. Jaguar had a terribly provincial golf club image in the 'Nineties and the new range is changing that.

I love the cosy snug wrap around feeling of a Jag interior, acres of wasted space inside like a MPV means you're driving a bus to me (been there, done that). I like the old fashioned design, from when cars were cars not mobile front rooms etc etc

Today's news is I finally managed to run the 406 (HDi) out of diesel, after many months of coming close. I'm not especially in awe of it's economy, but then again it's mostly used for local runs and going to work, so either round the doors or getting a good booting.

Anyhow, it made the EML come on but an internet search says it'll go off again soon, so I'm not too worried.

I had an x300 and an x308 and I liked them both. The 300 rusted a fair bit (windscreen pillars worryingly were the worst bits) but in every other way felt acceptably Jaguar. The 308 had a horrible dash but otherwise was a better car in every way. But, I do like a Jaguar and always have, yet strangely, I don't like any of the modern ones. The last one I'd have would be an X350 or 's' type so longas it was V8.

After having a late XJ40 which I very much enjoyed I feel no need to own an X300, although an XJR may sway me.

 

Is i just me or is an X300 smaller inside than an XJ40?

They make a good noise but the Halfords body kit puts me right off. You can make a 4Motion as quick as an R32 and it'll still look like a shit box angry office boy special (TM Lord Sterling) MkIV Golf. Pete's also has an interior which isn't DEPRESSION GREY. I still can't read the instruments because of my special blue/yellow colour blindness, but the car isn't so insufferably smug to prevent me overlooking it.

 

It has torque beyond 2000 and 2100 rpm, too. Much like.

I found out the Bentley has 'smart charging' of some sort so as I jump started it the other day, it has decided that is the correct level of charge for the stupid fucking battery so having left a door open for 20 minutes yesterday while I hoovered three tonne of dog hair from the back of it, it wouldn't start. The only fix is to take the battery off so it resets. While it was off, I have brought it inside to recharge it as it's faster than waiting for the car to learn what is what.

 

Fucking battery is HUGE and weighs several tonnes and ancient cripples have to lay down for rather a long time after lugging the bastard about. Got to put it back in the car yet... not looking forward to that!

 

Why do they have to fuck about though? Old fashioned alternators did the job perfectly well, were cheap and reliable whereas if this 'alternator' needs replacing it's  1.5 grand plus, and then several bags of 'fuck you bumhole' to fit it.

Great, had to mess about hoovering the interior of the Zafira this morning as someone was coming down to swap for their car. Opened the bonnet of their motor, comedy overspray eveywhere. Looked at V5 and 'classed as beyond economical repair' (or whatever is is) typed on by DVLA.

Try one - you might like it, or you might not. I would have thought they would be likely appeal to someone who likes Rovers. There are similarities between the two car's emphases.

Today I fitted a new set of Boot struts on the back of my Bmw compact (quite cheap at £13 a pair) as the original 20 year old ones where getting a bit tired and it seems every hatch I buy has this problem as on the roffle smart I would have to balance the glass hatch on my head when putting shopping in the boot till I got around to changing them.

 

Then I found a couple of RUST bubbles on my E36 compact front drivers wheel arch and the car is immaculate elsewhere and although I've not cleaned the underside for about 4 months it's only most probably done only less than a 1000 miles and is dripping with wax oil and old oil on the underside and I guess the wing was only sprayed last year ( the rust bubble is less than half the size of my small finger nail) so it's now time to find a new wing if I can.

I'm tempted to go pattern part as its only £32 for one on eBay but I'm worried about the quality but money's tight.

 

And also today I also decided to clean the leather seats in my E36 Cabriolet with saddle soap and Giptone leather treatment as I've only got a couple of silly jobs to do to it now before my father has the car and the seats have come up amazing.

Fixed the Xantia's fuel leak.

 

The fuel filter housing lid was on fine. There was a slow, steady drip coming from the drain tap on the front while the engine was running. I tightened it as much as I could but it persisted, just a tiny tiny bit. Just to make sure, I wrapped some self-amalgamating tape round. Sorted.

 

They can't retest until Monday now, though.

 

That means we'll be 4-up in the BMW 316 tomorrow. I've topped up the oil and checked the tyre pressures while I was outside faffing with cars anyway, so it's ready for the trip now (barring petrol).

Ah no Rob, I wouldn't have minded having that off ya. My KV6 is clinging on to dear life at the moment, everything is falling apart around it but the engine just keeps on going. I'd have scrapped it to take on your X300. I've got the pangs of wanting to try something different. Never mind.

It was broken Mo, so you wouldn't have wanted it. Suspected knackered diff, and various other issues meant it was a cut my losses situation. No regrets I'm glad I've tried one, but it was never a keeper anyway.
