Mileage discrepancy - haircut?

Is there any way of checking Test history on Chassis number instead of reg mark?

Posted

I think that's the one I was watching- metallic blue with 18" audi wheels? Looked really good and the plates were blanked out in the pictures. That's about the going rate for a decent Passat that age

Edit to add- the drivers seat seemed a bit "worn" for 110k

I had a Passat tdi estate a couple years ago and it was great! Did 30k in 3 years without issue. Only sold it as I was given dad's Golf. Thinking about getting another one in the new year though!

To be honest I used to cover my plates until I realised nobody would bother cloning shite.

You've never known pain until someone drives off without paying for their tank of fuel... with your number plates on their car.

Yes, your reg is freely viewable at all times, but most low level crims are so lazy, they find it easier to look online than to find a similar car in the real world.

Used to drive these regular new, a company I worked for had them as company cars so a 52 plate 130 TDI wasn’t steed in many a trip to South Wales. Did Sheffield to Andover and back in a day once with work between so I can confirm they’re ace on the motorway.

If your happy with what you paid and it gives you good service then I’m happy for you. Sometimes picking the cheapest one doesn’t always work out.

Why didn't you spend £200 on the VW Pasta that was on here? £1300 would have bought a lot of petrol with the gap between the Diesel and Petrol fuel economy.

Posted

Between the trips to our caravan and my wife delivering her avon goods we would spend a fortune on petrol.

I had a 2.0 Mondeo Petrol and a 2.0 Mondeo Diesel. On my stop start with a bit of dual carriageway 15 mile commute I saved a whopping £5 a week with the diesel.

Worth it to not be driving a nasty generic diesel.

I do like the torque you get from a diesel and the coarseness though. It’s just mechanically speaking the stuff that surrounds them are fucking crap.

Would have another though on reflection at throwaway money.

Those VAG petrols aren't too bad on fuel. Also far cheaper and easier to repair if/when they break.

if is "smells"* funny walk, if it doesnt go for it.

Have you actually picked this motor up yet? Presumably on eBay the clause of sale is that it’s sold subject to it being described as per the ad. You don’t want to turn up early and he’s warming the fucker up.

The blue one owned by a painter or summit who's business has improved meaning he needs a van? Hmm. I don't think it'd be my £1400.

Purely a personal opinion, doesn't mean it's a bad car if it's been looked after. Just file the odometer under the "fiction" category and be fully prepared for the same hassle when you sell it.

Very good cars, don't worry about it on a 13 year old car, I've seen these with 500k + as taxis. Far better than a Vauxhall. I've read your previous Vauxhall issues and my heart sank when I read you were thinking of another ( Stockholm or rather Ellesmere syndrome sprang to mind)...

This will be much better ( hopefully )

What does the mileage read for 2007 - 2011? Does it tally with the 130k in 2011? If so I would say it's done 180k miles in total. What do others with that mileage go for?

Posted

It concurs with 175 - 180k which indicates it is not a mistake. The earliest entry on the computerised database is over 100k.

Posted

Actually it was 72k in 08. It jumped to 101k in 09 and increased until 2012 when it showed 65k.

Why would a 13 year old diesel Passat only have 100k on it ? Chances are it was clocked the first time before its 3rd birthday. Then the cab driver who ran it for the next 3 years did it annually , then a dodgy back street dealer over clocked it before selling it on dodgy loan shark finance to a benefits cheat builder/painter to use as a steLth van before selling it to a Romanian guy to take him and his 4 mates in reflective vests between jobs.

How you ended up mixed up in this natural lifecycle of a Passat, I don't know.

Because I wanted out of the natural lifecycle of vectras.

Private plates are a bloody nightmare when checking mot history. If it tallys with when the plate change occurred it's probably genuine, the previous car being 130k then onto this one.

I can't really see stolen mot certs being done unless it sold for very good money at the time.

I am sure that in some instance, the Driva Vehical Lisunse Argents have mucked it up on a private plate change, it works all ok on three of our cars which have all worn at least four different registrations including a couple that have been moved around between cars.

So I would put my money on a dash bulb failure that someone has 'whacked the dash hard' to get the build to illuminate and upon doing so, the odeometer has spun round a few digits. You could try banging the windscreen to see if it outs 6 months tax on it. Other than that, if the car 'drives all good and you like it' then there is some negotiating to be done which may leave the seller even more mortified that he already is.

Posted

To be honest I am cooling rapidly. The issue is if I have to sell - it will be easier to get rid of the clap.

The ones we had saw 120K in about 4 years. Still ran like a dream though.

You have big testicles though for buying a £1400 diesel sight unseen. Make sure you give it a good run round when you pick it up and that you are starting it from stone cold.

I would rather have a Vauxhall than a vag. Our 2010 1.9 tdi leon has had nearly 4.5k in repairs in the 1st 6 months we had it. Fucking total disgrace.

That is sounding more like a haircut. It's only in the last couple of years that you can check the MOT history online. That's when all the early cutting got discovered.

I'd pass personally. It's the time of year when bargains can be had. Especially in January when most are poor from Christmas and buying cars is the last thing people want to do.
