garycox Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Hi all, I have a bit of a conundrum for you...To cut a long story short, my dad is looking to buy an MGB GT. I obviously think this is a rubbish idea but he doesn't like any of my alternative suggestions (Rapier, Vitesse, Marina, Allegro etc) and I've run out of ideas. It needs to be sporty and ideally tax exempt. And something he will like. Which isn't much. He has about £3000 to spend and that needs to get a good example of whatever it is.Any suggestions?
MrRegieRitmo Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Reliant Scimitar? Don't think you'll get a Stag for that money. Possibly a 70s TVR but still may be too expensive!
Owain-328i Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I quite like MG's, however clearly he will be needing a MGC or a B V8.How much are Stags?
Pete-M Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Probably get an a good Stag for that, one with the Rover V8 in.Might not be original, but it'll be faster, easier to fix and more reliable
Father Ted Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Should be able to find one for £3k - and every bit is still available.
MrRegieRitmo Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 How much are Stags?I thought they were at least 5k for a decent one rising to a silly, 6 or 7k, maybe even more! Or perhaps that's just the silly price dealers in the back of Practical Classics!
r.welfare Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I viewed a '74 Stag last year for my former boss. It was solid, ran sweetly with the original 3-litre V8 and had a long MOT, but was spoiled by a repaint (in Magenta!) that looked like it had been applied with a yard brush by a blind chimp with the palsy. Still, the dealer was only asking £3,600. A *really* good one can be as much as £12k.Does your dad want a rolling resto or as near to mint as possible? If the latter, I'd tell him to forget about tax exemption and find a '75-'77 BGT with the "4WD" ride height and rubber bumpers, they're the least desirable ones so you'll get more car for your money. Or how about a BMW 2002 or Dolomite Sprint?
RedSparrow Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Won't be tax free but may I suggest a TR7?You can get a really nice one for £2000ishPlus I hate MGBs with a passion!
Richard Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 The MGB has all the disadvantages of an old shitter without the advantage of being rare, pleasant or cool.
garycox Posted June 11, 2009 Author Posted June 11, 2009 I already suggested the 1300GT. Cortina is a possibilty though.Oh and sorry guy, I forgot to mention he doesn't like convertibles This is going to be hard...Are GT6's any good?
Father Ted Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 1973 Bond Bug Classic - checkHard Top - checkSporty - CheckFree road Tax - umm, well its a trike so its £66/ yearUnder £3k - Check"tuneabiity" - check. Job done, go to pub.
garycox Posted June 11, 2009 Author Posted June 11, 2009 Rover would be too big I think, I'd not thought about the BMW, I'll try that one. A Manta A would be a good call too.Bond Bug might be a contender actually, it's a bit... silly... but he did go through a phase of wanting a Bond Minivan or whatever they're called recently. It wouldn't be too hard to persuade him to get a Mini, but that would be worse than the MG because he'd insist on 'modifying' it with loads of tat. He's offered me a very good price for mine actually but his plans included arches, wheels, chrome etc. So it's not for sale.
trigger Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 The Frogeye (Which looks lovely) is still a soft top though which the OP doesn't want, as is the MX-5, which is great choice if you could get one with a hard top. What about a Dolly Sprint?. Should get a half decent one for £3000 only downside is that it won't be tax extempt.Or you could try a Triumph Vitesse 2.0, That would be Tax free and quite nippy as well.
garycox Posted June 11, 2009 Author Posted June 11, 2009 Good suggestions, thanks! Keep 'em coming, we're going to Bromley on Sunday and he'll probably buy something...
Richard Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 How about an "02" BMW? Can you get a reasonable one of those for £3000?
ashmicro Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Another vote for the Dolly Sprint from me.Past experience colours my view of the Shitfire, so I'll comment no further.
trigger Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 How about an "02" BMW? Can you get a reasonable one of those for £3000?I'm thinking about getting one of these now myself, Found a nice 1602 on carsandclassic which sounds ideal but it's in Lincoln which miles away from me
Rocket88 Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Fiat 124 coupe [if you can find one] Fiat 131 Sport [if you can find one] another vote for 02 series Beemer. GT6 [if he's fairly bendy] Saab 99 turbo,
Justin Case Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Alfetta GTV. Won't be be tax exempt but a really nice one, even a V6 should be in budget.
AnthonyG Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 How about an "02" BMW? Can you get a reasonable one of those for £3000?In a word, not really.
