The gear lever, however, is delightful. A slender chromium plated shaft with a lovely bakelite knob, it's a well known fact that this item alone cost as much to produce as two Kia Picantos. There's no better choice of motor car if you wish to shun all further human contact. Triumph--Mayflower_2.jpg I always figured they are desirable. Now you severely limited the days I can live without one. Anyway, which of the moaners has bought it now? eddyramrod 1
richardmorris Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 It always looked like it should have had four doors....but didn't.There was a four door version, I saw one in the flesh. But the name escapes me at the moment.
Angrydicky Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 This is why I like this thread and see the point of it: Not only did I not know a Triumph Mayflower existed, I did not know they're so cheap. I occasionally look at the eBay thread but as the quantity is so large, I miss stuff. Maybe there needs to be a eBay for pre 1990 and under 3k-4k thread. I.e. affordable classics. If such thread existed, I'd might have not ended up with MGB...An MGB is an excellent starting point for someone just learning about how to fix and maintain classic cars for the first time. Nothing wrong with them. But I think in time you could be tempted into something much rarer and more interesting! eddyramrod, catsinthewelder, alf892 and 1 other 4
NorfolkNWeigh Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 There was a four door version, I saw one in the flesh. But the name escapes me at the moment.I always thought the Mayflower was 4 door, because of the opening rear 1/4 , are you thinking of the Renown which was a larger stablemate? eddyramrod, Angrydicky and Squire_Dawson 3
Junkman Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 And yes, the chance to find a usable Reknown for sub two bags is very, very slim. However, stranger things have happened. eddyramrod and Squire_Dawson 2

It had the proportions of a 4-door, but had a wheelbase that was much too short for it.
Tadhg Tiogar Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Have we got someone here who's never driven a Mayflower?BenYes. That would be me!

Skizzer Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 I will buy your Alfa. Or the Audi - I enjoyed that one Hmm. Maybe I’ll give the Audi a bit of attention tomorrow and see whether I’d wish it on you. Alfa needs to stay for a while I think, a friend has it on loan. That shouldn’t be a permanent arrangement though. Junkman and chaseracer 2

wuvvum Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 Was it some weird Indian market thing like the 4-door Herald?
Christine Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 We had a Renown after that A40 Devon commercial..... egg, NorfolkNWeigh, eddyramrod and 4 others 7
richardmorris Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 Was it some weird Indian market thing like the 4-door Herald?I don’t think so. I’ve been looking at my photos and not found it yet. The lady, wife of owner I suspect, was certainly not one for driving foreign cars! I was commenting to a 2cv friend about it, saying “well it’s not a mayflower”, and she said no it’s certainly not. I’ll recall eventually I saw it about 10 years ago nr honiton at a local car show.
Squire_Dawson Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 Really the Renown combined the best of both worlds and may even have been the zenith of mass-market craftsman built British cars. Reliable and powerful Vanguard engine (in the later cars) combined with the best English coach building tradition. I would have one without hesitation. I should also add that I have never paid more than 2 grand for any car of mine. Depends what you're looking for and how you go about it. eddyramrod 1
DaveDorson Posted January 2, 2018 Author Posted January 2, 2018 The point of the thread, as someone asked earlier, was for me to muse over what £2k could get me. Tail end of last year, I decided to rationalise a bit and get myself something nice, and something daily. With a view to move on something nice, once a few of my "keeper" projects are done. And, I've enjoyed reading the responses. I also figured pretty early on, that what I really want is an old Jag, and the reason so many of the cars you've pointed out were dismissed off hand, is because I want an old Jag, and I doubt a lot else will really scratch the itch. Fabergé Greggs, eddyramrod and chaseracer 3
Asimo Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 Good luck with finding what you want. From my point of view, as someone who doesn't warm to most Jaguars at all, they have the advantage that if you get excited by the "Jagness" it is available in all of their models from Mk1 to XJ40 which covers more than 40 years of leather, wood and chrome straight-sixness. Since the models no one wants ('60s S type?) are so closely related to the popular models (XKE) spares support is much better than for most marques. Looking forward to reading what you do get for your £2000. eddyramrod 1
BorniteIdentity Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 I’m no expert - on anything really - but I’m not sure £2k buys what you want. You can buy a Jag for £2k, and you can buy a classic for £2k, but I think the two are mutually exclusive. The only two baggers I see are either modern or not jaguars. Then again, I’ve probably not being paying attention because the stories of financial and vehicular ruin associated with 30 year old Jaguars is enough to have me crying in my sleep. Good luck with it though. Unless you are one of the AS elite with a lot of money or credit lines, I think the key to success is having one or two good ones.
