Ford galaxy 2.3 petrol.

In my search for an alternative to my jap bus I have seen these a few times. What do the knowledgeable members of the parish think about them. The one I have seen is one owner and under 60,000 miles plus manual. Petrol obviously. Good bad ,buy, don't touch with a shitty stick. I thank you.

I did 300 miles in a diesel one yesterday.

03 plate

Rotten rear arches and the heater didn't work but drove well

Yes plenty of diesels about but I need a petrol. Most of this size are starship mileage. The 2.0 ones are a bit leggy has well. These seem cheap for what they are.actually.excessive corrosion appears on mot history on the two I looked up. Says it all really.

I think these use the old twin cam engine rather than a Zetec so are a bit juicy (my 2 litre certainly was) but they're a decent enough steer for a people carrier.

The 2.3 auto is nice, though I would definitely go for the 1.9 TDI PD engine for preference - Gearbox exploded on mine at 283k - it ran forever. Needed very little in the way of oil and wasnt bad on fuel.

They're not bad, essentially a re-badged VW Sharan. The 2.3 engine is the one from the bug-eye Scorpio, or a development of it anyway.

The 806/Synergie was a more thoughtfully designed MPV though, with a completely flat floor all the way from the bootlid to the dash and sliding side doors.

Yep Synergie not bad, I had the offer of a 2.0 Petrol version of one on an 02 plate - the tax was £350 a year on it. Wasnt keene on that.

Old Ma Fourspeed had an 806 2.0 pez brand new in 2003, one of the very last on a 52 plate. She ran it for about ten years with no trouble and I ran it for about a year after that, one of the most comfortable cars I've had. I took the back seats out used it pretty much exclusively as a posh van for hauling stuff to and from south-western France. I used to fill it up somewhere between Calais and Rouen and it'd do the rest of the trip (500 miles ish) on one tank. Cracking car.

Yep they are the 16v i4 engine, not bad engines at all

Thank you everyone. I shall go round on my travels soon and have a look at citreon and ford. I do like the citreon /peugot ones because sliding doors. Also is the peugot 807 2.0 hdi the same engine has the 405 taxi drivers starship mileage one.

Don't forget the Fiat Ulysse is also in the 806/Synergie Eurovan lineup.

(Speaking of Fiats dare I mention Multiplas?)

The 807/C8 car was but a shadow of the 806/Synergie/Ulysee. The earlier car is far more durable in every aspect. I would have another 806 tomorrow, I wouldn't touch an 807 with yours.

I've looked at these too, the best condition under a grand seem to be the 2.3 petrols. I agree good engines but the thirst puts me off a bit. My old work had lpg transits that had this engine I'm sure, never seen an lpg galaxy though

Get a 2.8 V6 4wd.

I recently got the 2.0 version. It's comfy, easy to get into, parts are ok and very available. Flat load space sans seats. Ace!

The 2.3 is the preferred petrol one to go for but mpg will suffer a tad.

Mine is ace. Pretty much rust free and was under 400 quid.

I only wish the rear doors were slidey - the small Mitsubishi Star Runner spoiled me in that respect.

Dont the 2.3 engines suffer with horrible timing chain failure?

EDIT:

No its the 2.8 V6

The 1.9 PD diesel engine in mine suits it well. A few problems with limp mode but now sorted with some Mr muscle in the turbo. Also, the floor is flat in mine. The dsg gearbox is my first auto and I'm impressed.

It did fail it's mot today. Broken spring, headlight beam needs adjusting and handbrake is rubbish. Also, had a fair few advisories. My plan is to get the garage to do the failed items, tidy up the brake pipes with a rub down and paint and run it for another 12 months.

It seems that I may have fitted the front drop links incorrectly. Should you remove the rubber sleeves before fitting? I thought they were meant to stay on!

^^^^theyre not a DSG, just a 5 speed conventional auto

I've one the same; keep on top of the rust and they're great

I've driven a 2.3 manual, s'alright, but nothing to write home about; I can't think of any reason why I'd have a mk2 Galaxy in any other flavour than diesel; the PDs are still a good engine and any of the petrols (except the VR6) are underwhelming

Posted

I thought it was a DSG. You can slide the stick right and select the gears up and down. Does a conventional auto do that? Thinking about it, does a DSG have two clutches?

Yes and yes.

Even my Laguna v6 could be shifted into "manual" gear selection mode. That definitely was a slush box.

My gooner does this too. Ace for making it go up a great when it doesn't want to and fancies sitting at 3k in 4th doing 60mph up a slight incline for fuck all reason other than it wants to!

Heavy on fuel. Get the TDi ones, they're brilliant things. Mega on juice and seriously rapid.

Posted

If you can find the newest shape they come in a 2.0 petrol that does a good deal better on the juice than the old 2.3. The diesels are good but a lot of them are clapped out now.

I think the newer ones are 2.0 ltr eco boost with powershift auto. Not sure about these. I would have a diesel just without a dpf. What yrar did dpf staRte going on the diesels . Does anyone know.. I have seen sort of 58 plate 2.0 petrol ones that are not this boost thing and are a chain so I assume this would be a decent one.

I used to drive an early 2.3 manual back when they were current.  It was a car I always looked forward to driving.  A bit thirsty, but reliable and cheap and easy to maintain.
