"learned" is more often learnt.

"polyglott" is polyglot.

"despite you could clearly distinguish between elaborated and restricted code" I'm not sure what this means.

"no comparably stammered together incapability could be found" nor this.

"to an extend" should be to an extent.

Happy now?

Ben

Your input is appreciated!

"despite you could clearly distinguish between elaborated and restricted code" I'm not sure what this means.

I merely anglicised these terms, which in hindsight obvoiusly was a mistake.

They are "elaborierter Code" and "restringierter Code" in German and my assumption was they are literally translated into English.

Based on your comment I researched this and it turns out that the English equivalents are 'formal language' and 'public language'.

It is known as the Bernstein-Hypothese, aka Defizithypothese, a linguistic assumption made by Basil Bernstein in 1958.

Bernstein based his assumption on the Sapir-Whorf-Hypothese, which links thinking to language, but Bernstein limited it to speakers

of the same language, i.e. within one common language.

Elaborated code and restricted code are phrases that exist in the English language, however they are not normally used outside of a sociological context. That was the first time I have seen them used in everyday conversation, so I commend you for that, I thought it made sense and fitted in very well.

^^^^Excessive use of carriage return when reading in mobile version I'm afraid

I thought the man of junk was adopting some form of structured writing or poetry with which I was unfamiliar. Like a limerick or sonnet. But different. But I see now that he 'shits on mobiles'. Ah well.

Hear! Hear! Being in the habit of using words and phrases the true meaning of which I am not fully or sometimes even partially aware (mostly in order to try to appear intellectually superior to all except those to whom I am in fact, not superior), I shall be quite happy to absorb these two phrases into my vocabulary. If my counterparts in discourse are also unaware of the true meaning of said phrases, so much the better. They are admirable phrases and I look forward to using them etc. etc.

Tl:Dr

To quote Mrs CW: "you're a wordy bastard" (who all too often doesn't know what he's talking about)

More seriously and to echo what JM wrote, I have no explanation for why this corner of t'internet continues to be such an enclave for fine writing. But I am very glad that it is. As has been written several times in other non-shite related threads, AS functions as a support group and virtual pub/community centre without which my life would be much the poorer and a good part of that comes from the ability of all to express themselves so well. Without resorting to the use of 'innit'.

Much.

Innit?

Are you sure that isn't from a 'Goodness Gracious Me' sketch?

Can we add in people who dont know what they are selling?

Some fud has been trying to sell this old E34 525 diesel for ages and keeps insisting that its an M3.

https://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/1309118309.htm?ca=16_s

While this fud insists his omega diesel is an MV6.

Oh yes - Trying to track down a manual Jag and any car with factory HIDs based on what twats have written in ads (or ticked all the wrong boxes) is pretty bad - but I'd like to reserve special mention for the twat who listed his BMW ecu as "not Ford, Rover etc"

I merely make it look alright on my computer screen, without any regard of what it looks like on one of those telephones.

I couldn't do it any other way, since I don't use a telephone one can carry around. In fact, I hardly use telephones at all.

I must say I'm glad I moved here after I learned English.

There is this little island next to a polyglott Continent that adopted its language as a common denominator,

yet people visiting to improve their English must be appalled by what they hear and read.

You can slag the septics as much as you like, but generally they are in better command of the English

language than the English are.

That's bollocks. I'll concede that standards have definitely slipped in the UK, especially in younger people since some education sector WANKER decided to stop penalising bad spelling (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1490040/Incorrect-spelling-will-not-be-penalised-in-English-tests.html), but the septics' educational standards have been in freefall for decades. Just read contributions from septics in e.g. the YouTube comments area if you want to see just how poor their standards of English* frequently are.

Coincidentally, Mr Conelrad and I had exactly this discussion the other day and just for comparison,

I suggested to read some German eBay ads to prove how terrible their German is.

I expected it to be on par with the drivel bordering illiteracy you sadly very commonly find on eBay UK

(and elsewhere) without really looking for it, but to my surprise, despite you could clearly distinguish

between elaborated and restricted code based on the education level the writers enjoyed*,

no comparably stammered together incapability could be found..

These are genuinely the first adverts I looked at, based on vehicles chosen entirely at random:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Opel-Calibra-/263225549859?hash=item3d49772423:g:558AAOSwA2hZxikB

http://www.ebay.de/itm/VW-Jetta-2-Hand-Original-Unverbastelt-144tkm-2-Jahre-TUV-Old-School-/272831965477?hash=item3f860d6925:g:lTUAAOSwTuJYstFB

Not great examples, but both contained mistakes.

However: more importantly, German is a much more phonetically-structured language than English – it looks pretty much like it sounds. English often looks nothing at all like it sounds. So I submit that it isn't fair to compare native speakers' capabilities in their respective languages (see also my comment about the education sector WANKER not understanding the very nature of 'education').

Why is it then, that exactly Shiters, of all people, appear to be able to communicate in impeccable

English? The standard on this forum is second to very little and I already have recommended this

forum to people interested in improving their English skills.

No idea, unless the possibly higher average age of contributors on this site is pushing up the overall standard. Comment about WANKER applies here too.

I'm not at all miffed, he was a shit-spouting ballsack. Good riddance to him and his childish drivel.

Jesus fucking christ...keyword spamming....This makes me rage like little else.

The parts section of LeBonCoin is literally unuseable now as no matter what you type in, the results are just pages and pages of recon turbos, interior LED bulbs or cone air filters. Each ad is just a wall of keywods of every make and model you can imagine....

Back in the day when you could place small ads in the local paper by phone, I recall a 'Marse Miner' being advertised in Bristol. God bless the westcountry accent.

Droitwich is considered to be almost civilised in comparison to much of the Midlands as well. If that had been written by somebody in Bromsgrove then you have got more sense by reading the poo that they had flung at the keyboard in frustration.

We've made it this far and nobody has mentioned the famous Peugeot 406 designed by Panini Farina yet. The shame. I'm still planning to have a Paninifarina badge made up for the 404 at some point

After seeing the state of the data on that DVLA spreadsheet after the scrappage scheme, a lot of these sellers could be quoting directly from their V5s.

Not an ad but seen on a Peugeot parts microfiche the words Catalyst and Catastrophe had been mixed up in translation.

"vehicle fitted with / without engine disaster"

I would guess at catalyst and cataclysm.

Have seen them referred to as Catholic converters here.

Once saw someone selling a BMW "SW111" key fob on eBay. It was actually an M5 keyfob upside down (with stripes, so it looked like "///M5").

Stupid question in the wrong thread...

But what is a 'septic' please? Seems to crop up often.

A wound infection or a part of a sewage system springs to mind, neither of which seems relevant in context.

Am I missing something?
