Rover Lickers: L-series befuddlement...

Got this 'ere L-series Freeloader.

It has an injector/pump related issue on one injector at low revs/lower pressure. That's a given, I know this. Been through the process to identify which injector/pump outlet is giving the trouble and it's injector number 1.

This also happens to be the only injector with the flylead/electrical socket attached. I don't actually know it's purpose (perhaps a tacho feed?, not really relevant), anyway I inadvertently unplugged this while the engine was running and now it won't start again!

I've disconnected the battery, reset the immobiliser etc to no avail. Googling doesn't help either (there's EVERYTHING for a TD4) but bugger all on this.

Suggestions? ("drag it outside and burn it" doesn't count).

Cheerios!

Does a battery disconnected clear the ECU on these? It worked on the XJ40. I know very little about modern electrickery, but there's bound to be some shared 'heritage.'

There is a great rover group technical video for the L series on u tube if you and be bothered to sift through that might help.

This is more or less the same pump as a VW TDI yes?

The sensor on the injector is a needle lift sensor which is required for feedback to the ecu that the pressure provided by pump is indeed doing the right amount of injecting.

I assume you have plugged it back in now?

Sorry I haven't got anything constructive for you on the non-start, but at least you now know what the sensor is.

Yes it's plugged back in, it only came out because the metal retaining clip was missing.

Sadly all of the links/sources offered so far have been fruitless.

Does anyone know if: having been unplugged whilst "live", perhaps the "sensor" component within the injector could be fried?

I really don't want to spend any unnecessary cash on this as I think it'll scrub up nicely and MOT easily with little outlay once it's running right.

:EDIT: I neglected to mention there's a fairly audible buzzing coming from the pump area with the ignition on that I don't recall being there before (akin to the buzzing of hair clippers).

The be fair, if it's the VAG pump like on my Leon I could get it to 60mph with the EML on when that wire snapped. Shouldn't stop it running, will stop it running properly.

That buzzing would appear to be normal if my L-series 200 is anything to go by, as for the rest of it, I'm clueless, sorry, but hopefully I've reduced your worrying noise number down by one.

If you are anywhere near West London or Hertfordshire I can probably help.

Thanks for the offer but I'm in Cornwall!

I've swapped out number 1 injector and bled it but despite getting fuel, I'm not getting any spray on cranking.

I fail to believe the high pressure side of the pump has just given up. There's gotta be something obvious I'm missing.

Well, it's alive!

In a moment of inspiration / coincidental luck I figured the MAF was fecked. Stumbled across a new one on the bay for £25 delivered. Fired it up on brake cleaner and all is well.

My previous statement was wrong. Changing the MAF didn't fix the problem, it just (in connection with many other fiddlings) reduced the white smoke.

I have though completely fixed it this morning, you wouldn't believe how small an issue it was (although a massive ballache on a Freeloader)... Can you guess what it is yet...?

Pilot Error?

Previous garage that fitted the new crankshaft sensor failed to lube up the o-ring, stopping it from locating fully into its hole.

All that aggro for a lack of vaseline ;)
