not really autoshite, but a rare car none the less...

my new steed, 550 v8 manual touring.  I intend to run it  for a wee while at least. Lovely as it is, its a bit too "current" for me to love, i can apreciate its qualities though.

I like it as its an SE not an  M-Sport  and was specced with a manual box and its finished in blue, not black white or  silver....

That's a nice spec, and a model I'd never seen here; if it ain't a rattly 520d, they don't want them

Is it any juicier than say, a 530 petrol?

on a slow and steady run 30 mpg is doable  but im avraging 24pmg... but, im enjoying it. :)

Looks nice does that. I'd be tempted to debadge it for giggles. Seats look better than my armchair!

Golly, I didn't know a 550i was a thing. Hell of a sleeper. Nice.

Bet that shifts, I did a few hundred miles in a x6 4.0d (3.0ltr twin turbo) the other day, I wanted to hate it. But after a while I took to it, it gripped amazingly and with 300+bhp it was nippy alright. Its just the image. But that tourer looks ace, and I am pretty sure it would keep up with most things.

Not a fan of e60's but a massive v8 and manual box is pretty cool. I wonder if this is the 4.8v8 from the x5?

Someone was asking for the best tow car recently..... that's awesome and I don't like BMWs! Also do the indicators work in these larger pez models as they don't in the rep special 520D's!

That indeed should make an awfully nice sleeper. It's a bit bonkers to think that even this 4.8 V8 isn't the biggest engine you could get in them, even as a Touring.

I like that a lot. Manual V8 relatively non-bling spec. Perfect.

Needs a 520i badge though.

My old e34 520i 24v and e28 528i both averaged 24mpg with much much less performance. Jeez, if I remember right I think manual 2-litre Cortinas only did 24mpg average if you could be arsed counting.

Enjoy driving it, perfect for the Lecht road or all round the West Highlands and across into Skye.

Now that is the correct gearbox for a big V8, lovely.

Nice car and it won't be that long before it qualifies as autoshite. I wonder how much it's depreciated since new?

Can I express an interest if it comes up for sale please :)

I'm very surprised there was a manual option, is be surprised if the take up rate cracked 5%.

I had a go in a 4.8 X5 a few months ago with something daft like 6000 miles on the clock (55 plate if I recall), I wanted to hate but it was rather nice.

I seem to remember reading that in the last lear of E60 production Ferrari sold more 430s (or maybe 458s?) than BMW sold 550s. I can't imagine many of those were manuals, so it must be very rare indeed! :)

Edit: DMS claim to be able to remap them to nigh on 400bhp, they're about 360 as stock.

WHY DO THEY DO THIS?

Because they lost the war & still want to annoy us.

WHY DO THEY DO THIS?

The technical answer is that BMW in recent times have adopted what they like to call modular construction, which as far as engines are concerned means they all share certain components, pistons, rods etc. So basically 1 cylinder = 500cc. So depending on whether they are 3, 4, or 6 pot means they're 1500, 2000 and 3000cc respectively. (V8s and V12’s differ from this convention)

So all cars, whether they're badged as a 316, 318, 320, 328, 330, 335, 340 etc are 2.0 or 3.0 Just in various states of tune, the higher the number the more powerful it is.

The AS answer is as above, probably because they just wanted to be annoying.

Absolutely. I'm the lucky bugger with a three-pot, so a 1500cc 116D

It's actually quite a smooth engine, but I can't imagine how it could be any opposite to this lovely vehicle.
