According to Google Translate: "The Jeep has a perks engine a very economical, perfect guarantor with brand new tires for fish and spare parts !!"

Diesel engine, built in 1969. What's not to like? It even has tyres for fish.

£692.95 to you, Tovaritsch. Or me, ideally.

I can think of no finer way of going mad, deaf and blind from noise, fumes, crippling vibration and seats outlawed as implements of torture under the Hague Convention, than driving that shite 2000 miles across yoorop. Dumper treads = winnar. Just don't attempt to drive it;

1) faster than 15 mph

2) in the wet

I am in love!

I'd be more than happy to try and drive that back to Blighty, Not sure how far it'd make it but I'd give it a go.

Using my battered white Volga?

Using my battered white Volga?

I was meaning the Jeep with dumper tyres on it but the Volga would be equally ace.

Can we confirm the dates of this please? I can't do the last Bank Holiday in May but could do the first.

Yes, I meant slap a red dome light on the Volga's roof to chase after the jeep! :)

In a country with so many old Ladas, perhaps it's so the police know which end is the front? :-)

Bulgarian licence plate trivia: only letters that are common to both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets have been used on Bulgarian car licence plates since 1992 (this is also the case in Greece, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Bosnia).

I can only do the last bank holiday.

I am definitely going then with some mates for my 40th and will be driving chod home.

If people want to come then I am more than happy to sort out an international SF for those who want it - with help of Alex/Andy.

If people want to go a different time then that is cool.

Assuming 25mpg, that's 400 quid of fuel, unless we can worknout a super sneaky way of buying cars that will run on 2 star /87 octane and smuggling as much as we can

I hadn't thought that it would be a cheap trip,  but better start saving now in any case.

60mpg running 50% mix veg at less than € 0.5 a litre  and 50%  Hungarian pump diesel  at  € 1,097 a litre, currently in Foreignshire  and only getting ole 2 stroke bikes.

From Surrey I get 1555 km each way to Sofia so 3110 Km is 145 litres     75 * 0.5  + 75 * 1.1  that'll be  120 euro.   (obviously being Southern I can miss the bit North of Watfordshite)

I'm looking at booking a few days before and getting there via some European Railshite.

Yes. Sounds an excellent idea. There's still plenty of interesting stuff once you get past Austria. Was in Budapest a few months ago. Booked a trip to Gyór one day. About 140km trip for about £9 each way FIRST CLASS! That's the equivalent of Southampton to London. See how far you get on South West Trains for £9! One train was only three coaches long with a new 8000hp loco on the front. Epic. Had a whole compartment to ourselves both ways too. It's how train travel should be.

If you are driving back in some chod, you could head south into Greece...google says its a 6 or 7 hour run to the western ports, then get an overnight ferry to northern Italy for 150 eurocoins, then its a 12 hour drive to my gaff where there is a MIG welder, a hammer and enough cable ties to see you to Calais.

You'd be pissing blood already on the Zagreb bypass.

Would love to do this trip but time, money and the fact i bought a Reliant in Wakefield and it blew up near Thirsk does not bode well.

Sorry! No offence meant but the German and Austrian railways have been largely modernised haven't they? There's not the amount of loco hauled stuff there was, and what there is seems to be push-pull Railjets and push-pull doesn't count.

Once you get to Eastern Europe, whilst there are some modern units most long distance stuff still seems to be traditional loco hauled.

Can any of the Bulgarian-speakers here give me some idea of what a roadworthy Lada Niva is likely to cost? Failing that, a proper Soviet-spec Lada Riva.

As a confirmed Niva fan of many years I salute you sir, anyone who is even considering driving one from Bulgaria to England is a Demi god in my mind.
