This offer still stands. Its a little out of the way of a direct run back to UK, but could be a handy pitstop?

My nearest big town is Albi if you want to route-check it.

Are you near Laguepie?

Just found this thread as have only checked in periodically for a few months, this looks awesome! Just wanted to express some appreciation, great idea!

Jeepers. I've fallen in love about 20 times! Mostly with the yellow Wartburg tourist and the Hillman Minx.

I think the wartburg is my favourite too. They seem super cheap too.....

I'm not making any firm plans on what I want, so just perusing for ideas, so far random Lancia, Dedra, Kappa, Renault Nevada, and the odd Volga, Warty, Zastava, and this ...

I'm not sure how it would cope with a 2000 mile drive, but it looks lush. I fully expect it will be sold before May, but hey ho.

I'm not convinced about the mounting of the lpg tank, but I'd chance it for the drive home.

Still want a Lada 1500.

Also, how are we going to manage buying so many cars in one day? I think our translation service will be a bit stretched...

FFS.  I was doing so well at resisting the temptation to get dragged into this daft caper.  Now I'm looking at Ryanair flights and realising that my passport expires on 22nd May and will therefore need renewing.

I stupidly did not read this thread until just now. Sadly I've just booked my summer hols for that week, so I'm oot. However, if someone was to bring back a uaz truck, I'd definitely* consider a transaction that would involve either cash money or p38 swap (hopeful I know :) )

Coughs .... Erm I think that I called dibs on all the Wartburg tourists in Bulgaria. It's the reason that this is happening.

I have even done research

So please avert your eyes...

I do wonder if we should a Bulgarian tat thread and keep this for organising stuff.

The details are going to get lost otherwise.

Speaking to Andy it looks like Sealtainn is over 3 hours away from Sofia. So will have to think about logistics of it all.

If the local(ish) shitters are not conveniently located, how about finding an airbnb we could get for a few days? Possibly something with exclusive use and a decent size driveway.

To start with we could rent a car from the airport or somewhere between us. This should help chod hunting without putting anyone out.

Oh, I don't want a 2-stroke Warty, so you're welcome to those, I'd like a later tourist with a VW engine ;)

Posted

Sounds like I a plan.

Will have a look at what's available.

I think you will find I didn't mention two stroke anywhere - I am an equal opportunities Wartburg buyer.

Saying that a herd of tourists will be interesting convoy

If logistics allow, it might even be worth someone driving over in a reliable motor with a few tools and for use shuffling around. Said motor would probably want to come back as well, so potentially someone who isn't looking at buying, driving there and back for support purposes. If it's a largeish car it could even have a moped or something slung in the back for the return journey.

If someone was to do this, I'd suggest those going chip in to cover the fuel for the "support" vehicle

This looks to have potential

Out of town, whole house with parking.

Potentially adding quite a bit of expense though, depending on how many of us there are. Can we get up to 16?!

Plus side of a convoy of similar vehicles is greater scope for carrying the relevant spares. If I do go Warty, then I'm afraid it's two-stroke or no deal for me. The ringy-dingy soundtrack is exactly why I want to own one.

If you get to 10 of us then that is only £17 a night, which in the scheme of things I wouldn't have thought too bad.

If we booked it for the weekend it would then be £60 for accomodation, better than travel lodge. Plus we have a Shite HQ for the weekend with fettling space.

If we cook for ourselves that will reduce costs and we can have Shitefest BBQ out in the back garden.

If it had WiFi you could do a live Wartburg walk round on Hubnut.

Also there may be people who will come out for the weekend and then fly home, if there was a space to sleep.

But perhaps that is the second question then is what are people's budgets?

This 1 looks fairly sound...all done for £500

This is my current thinking on costs.

I might have missed some and I've only included one rough calculation, but it might be off putting to a few:

Transport to airport UK

Flight

Transport in BG - fuel/rental car

Accommodation BG

Accommodation en-route to UK 4-5 nights

Food + sundry expenses 7-10 days

Car purchase

Insurance BG

Fuel -> UK 2000 miles @ 30mpg = £400 @ 40mpg = £300

Tolls?

Ferry/tunnel

Repairs, tools, fluids, tyres

Registering car in UK, Nova, MOT, insurance etc

Posted

I'd be well up for avoiding tolls. A lot of the national routes aren't that bad, and depending on what we buy, endless 70-80mph might not even be on the cards.

Budget? Er, not really thought about it too much yet. Probably should!

Uaz?

Transport to airport UK _£20

Flight - £70

Transport in BG - fuel/rental car - £50

Accommodation BG -£70

Accommodation en-route to UK 4-5 nights -£200

Food + sundry expenses 7-10 days - £400

Car purchase -£500

Insurance BG - £50

Fuel -> UK 2000 miles @ 30mpg = £400 @ 40mpg = £300

Tolls?

Ferry/tunnel - £100

So probably £2k all in I reckon.

There are ways to reduce costs so sharing car with someone, just heading straight home rather than a tour through Europe, booking ferry in advance.

At the end though you potentially will end up with a car worth some cash.

Bumhats; my provisional work schedule means this is definitely a nonstarter.

Certainly a UAZ will not be a good bet for 80mph on autoroutes, 50-55 is more likely and better OMGMPG as well as reducing the risk of speed- or stress-induced FTP.
