I Used To See Loads Of...

...Citroen Saxo VTRs.

Where did they all go, mashed, bashed and crashed, I suppose?

It did seem to be the Chav car of choice around five to ten years ago.

A colleague of mine had a BT yellow one. It was totally hideous.

It seems to have been replaced by that white Vauxhall Corsa with the gloss black alloys.

You know the one, I'm sure.

And those facelift Ford Fiestas released around 1999. I think I saw one recently but it seemed they were omnipresent until a few years ago.

I know bloke of about 82 who still drives a  VTS or VTR, I never could tell the difference.

Logical as it sounds, the better one is the VTS. They're worth reasonable coin when they show up.

VTS is to VTR what 205 1.9GTi is to 205 1.6 GTi.

VTR was an 8v 1.6, the VTS was 16v.

Also, the "Limited Edition" Corsas can do one. So fucking many of them about, all in finance white with the black roof and alloys, and they're all poxy 1.2s as well.

Ta. I'll have to check the boot at some point to find out.

It's their posh car as his missus drives an AX.

They used to be everywhere because iirc Citroen had a very cheap finance deal on them with a years free insurance so young guys could afford them.

These have been my tip for future investment cash wins for a long time now. Obviously I sold my old VTR years ago just before they started going up in value.

The phase 1 cars like mine with the small headlights are pretty much non existant now. The gopping facelifted ones with the swept back teardrop shaped lights can still be found but numbers are thinning.

Any that do come up for sale tend to be half-assed track cars with badly welded in roll cages and no interiors.

Find a standard one and cherish it. Look at 205 GTi values these days - I guarantee* you these will go the same way.

It's a given that they will, just a matter of when. They've followed the pattern of being everywhere and disappearing fast. When the generation that had them starts getting all nostalgic they'll be in demand

Won't find anything on the boot - front of the side rubbing strip is where to look.

Ta. I'll look if I'm not too busy watching my missus in jodhpurs, she got to know them as they have a horse that needs driving about & they've got too old to do it.

I always fancied a blast in a VTS (the badge is only on the door btw Hooli), but to buy, I'd rather have a Clio 172/182.

I don't see many Saxos around full stop tbh.

Id quite like a VSX

The thinking mans Saxa

But the car I'd really like to squirrel away is a ZX Volcane

All been crashed or rotted out beyond economical repair which is the killer of these kind of cheap cars. I've also said the same regarding seeing less of them on the roads, today young lads would rather have a new ecoboost fiesta or the white cords on finance than buying an older hatch back, I can't say I blame them but where they find the money who knows!

The VTS got a 16v badge on the rear quarter which was Halfords tastic - just like the "sport" badges on the rs clios - must be a French thing!

This is my mk1 vtr that's had a 16v engine and gearbox transplant. Plus some other bits and pieces, 16v makes a hell of a difference to the experience - puts it up there with a 172/182 clio I reckon, owning one of those too the margin between them is not a wide one

Not many 406s left round here - not many Peugoets at all for that matter, just the odd tourist. Everyone seems to have gone all Kia - there's an excellent local dealer, which also sells Vauxhall, but not many from what I see.

Wife had a vtr in Barry blue.

Nice car, was swapped for an 08 fiesta zetec s which on paper was the same, 100bhp, same weight and performance but the saxo felt better.

I mean you had to make the fiesta "work" whereas the saxo was power from the off.

We looked at a vts but for marginally more performance offset by worse fuel economy and extra insurance premium the vtr was more than adequate.

Would definitely have another though.

These were proper little coffins. The crash safety record on them is terrible! But then a lot of small stuff from that era is pretty poor in that respect.

i worked at Citroën back in 2001 and had much fun playing about in brand new saxo vtr and vts, i even drove a mates brand new black vtr bought on the years free insurance scheme before she even got her hands on it, i could never get used to the tiny offset pedals on them, but i was jumping in and out of all sorts, i thought they were little fun cars though but took a dislike to them because they were the chav chariot of choice, ive always preferred the pre facelift

My early vtr ate it's rear stub axels, had some serious camber on both rear wheels.

Ever had a drop link let go doing about 90mph.?

That and the coil pack shitting it's self was the end of that.

As for the fiestas. My daily motor is a r reg 1.25 zetec. 110k on the clock and been regularly abused up the A1

Yeah, I reckon any nice low owner, low mileage ones without silly mods are well worth snapping up. MG ZRs too. Any popular hot hatch has a value resurgence once they're all gone and dudes approaching 40 want to relive their youth.

I've said this before, but Clio 172/182 is where it's at imo. Last of the big engined, naturally aspirated and properly small car that had excellent handling. Small hot hatches now are all big, fat and turbo'ed to the inch of their life.

I just wish I had a big barn/warehouse to store all these cars.

There used to Renault 21's every as well-especially the estates. Didn't realised they'd all gone before it was too late.

Make sure the heater hose across the front of the head never falls out that crap excuse for a clip & rubs on the rad fan bracket. My mussis' one did & it suffered OMGHGF at 20k. Shity ecu controlled temp gauge means it doesn't warn you till too late either.
