If I were PM in more than just initials I'd drive myself to meetings in one of these.

Wasn't the Olympics sponsored by BMW?I suspect BMW offer these at a very competitive rate, which is why they're chosen - almost as product placement type.

I'm told for the Olympics it came down to a straight choice - Nissan, who were offering a fleet of British built, zero emissions Leaves, plus they'd build all the charging infrastructure in central London and the Olympic Park needed to run them and hand it over to the Mayor when it was done, all for free. Or BMW, who were offering £££.

Sinn Fein used to use a Mk1 Granada up to the late 1990's. I remember seeing some footage of them driving up the long road to Stormont in it. Blue IIRC

Again this is probably because of availability of affordable bullet proof cars- that Granny was probably ex Goverment and ironically would have been used when new to protect people from its subsequent owners.

Not sure how old this pic is ,but safe to say that W126 probably wasn't in its first flush of youth when Adams got it.

Mate of mine is a chauffeur and picked up one of the ex olympic's 5 series, had 700 miles on it and he got a considerable discount to say the least

A few years ago there was a few armoured Vectra mk1s sold off by the RUC. I bet they shifted with the 1.8 in them.

Can't find any pictures of the Sinn Fein Granada though.

What about the Queen? Or has she stopped buying cars now she has a bus pass?

Those armoured cars usually lead a very long life. The German chancellor fleet still had a few panzered W126es well into this century,

I believe a few are still being used by special police units.

The armoured W126s were the first mass* produced "special protection" saloons of all ever. This is how many were built by the factory:

380SE (1981-1985)     86

380SEL (1981-1985)   88

500SE (1981-1985)       3

500SEL (1981-1985) 376

420SE (1985-1991)   229

420SEL (1985-1991)   63

500SE (1987-1990)       7

500SEL (1985-1992) 262

560SEL (1986-1992) 349

The big engined SWBs were exclusively used by special police and are hence very rare indeed.

I always thought the outgoing PM got to keep the car? Probably heard this down the pub so may not be 100%accurate!

The New Zealand government was nearly brought down not so long ago, when it was leaked how much the new fleet of BMW crown cars were costing - and they don't even have an indigenous manufacturer to compete in the tender.  BMW worldwide are bloody great at big ticket deals.

I wish we had stuck to Jaguars for the official cars, the British (American) ones weren't as good as the more recent British (Indian) ones though.

I suspect it's a great way of making the brand more prestigious. "The Queen of England owns a Bentley ya' know?" And all that.

CEO at work has just got lent a Rolls Royce for a week or two by them. Apparently they lend them out as they want to have them been seen driving around by those that may be remotely known.

I had a play with the interior earlier. Honestly can say I'd never want it. The whole stars on the roof thing is tacky too. I couldn't figure out how to remove the umbrella either, but then I didn't want to force in buttons on a £300k borrowes car and break it...

Oh it also has a night vision camera that is very sensitive and appears surprisingly good at seeing through clothes when people are close up. :o

The first time I rocked up in Downing Street as a kid, the ministerial fleet had a lot of Black Wolseley 18/85's.   http://www.wolseleyregister.co.uk/wolseley-history/blmc/1885-six/

I thought that was really cool cos my Dad had an 18/85.   That would have impressed him, the modern day Bee Em would not go down too well, should be in Jag's even if the Jags are made by the same folk who made the Rover 'City' thing

When I went to Number 10 in 1986, the cars lined up outside were all Austin Ambassador, Y A-Reg.

No, Jags are made by the same people who have always made Jags; but Jaguar are owned by the same folk who made the Rover "City" thing.
