Truck Shite

It's a Magirus-Deutz, probably 6x4 or 6x6 with an air-cooled V8.
Want even more now. Pity no room/domestic permission.

One for those with their speakers plugged in - M35A2 'Deuce and a Half'.

These were the staple trucks of the US armed forces from shortly after the Second World War until the 90s, when they phased out in favour of the boring Austrian designed FMTV. The A2 variant had a Hercules/Continental turbocharged 8 litre diesel, with probably the loudest stock turbo ever fitted to a truck. Unsurprisingly they were called 'whistlers'.

Another machine on my wish list. Or an M968 which replaced the M35 along those lines. PORN.

They sold well in Norway, so some regularly appear for sale here. Is none now but is a 1976 cab over 6x4 for sale that is in restoration can be yours for 9200 pounds.

Here before restoration started

I'm a little surprised that they were sold in the UK were there many sold?

I remember seeing those dumpers. Didn't they also do articulated plant, road-scrapers etc?

This past week was my first in over 2 years working on HGV's again as a mechanic. It made me remember a few things:

I hate Scania's.

I hate MAN's.

Mercedes are cool.

DAF's are the best.

🤣

Sadly, the place I work (My old-new workplace) fall mostly for Scania's....

Not a huge amount were sold, mainly 8 leggers for the construction industry.

Thanks and this was what I suspected. Most customers in the UK in the 60's and 70's probably preferred local brands such as Bedford?

IFA L60 and Orwo colour film shop sign! Halle, DDR

I used Orwo colour slides in the late 80's, early 90's. The colour rendition was "acceptable", it was not on a par with Fuji, Agfa or Kodak, but a sight cheaper.

When I went to Romania on holiday in 1991 I ran out of film but found a shop there that sold Orwo. It was a fraction of the UK price so I bought a few. Imagine my surprise and delight when I opened the first box and found that the envelope for the process paid development was identical to the UK one. Wrote the UK address on posted them off, they all came back, wish I'd bought more.

This is interesting and is it the picture or is the middle wheel bigger? If it is then it is strange.

Posted

AEC Dumptruk (sic), very much like the model Oxford Diecast are supposed to be bringing out shortly. And yes, the middle wheels do look like they've got bigger tyres but I have no idea why as both back axles are driven.

Also, this bit in the ad is a tad concerning - advertising it with 20 year old pictures doesn't inspire confidence in its current condition.

All of this is correct. However I prefer working on Mercs to DAF. DAF are nicer to drive though!

wouldn’t mind driving this….spotted at Mercedes truck training centre at wentworth park.

Bit late to the Magirus Deutz love-in, but here's a beauty I snapped at a tractor rally at Ballymena Showgrounds all the way back in 2010.

I wouldn't like to be dailying it, at today's fuel prices...

Also an boxvan oddity found in a field in County Down back in 2010 - seems to have originally belonged to the Scottish Co-Op.

With the front end panelled over for some strange reason, I can't get a fix on its identity - some sort of Commer? - but I daresay someone on here knows for sure...

Numberplate seems to be AGB498B, suggesting a 1964 Glasgow plate.

These were all lurking on a very old mobile phone; didn't even know they were there.

The front windows and the fact it's Scottish makes me think it's some sort of Albion, but I may be miles out as it was really the '50's Albion's that had the split screens, and they tended to be bigger than this...

Split screens are very '50's. For example  some Commer's, ERF's, Dennis's and AEC's from the 50's  had them, but the profile of 'yours' matches Albion's as they are flat and straight sided, most of the others have some sort of curve in them.

See they're going all cost saving on the colour scheme now, all white with a single logo somewhat reminiscent of the parent company. Thankfully not the parent company colours though!

Being Jock I'd think Albion but, a bit of a long shot, Rowe Hillmaster ?

I think it’s an Albion Claymore…

That's definitely a Claymore. It has the same style cab as the one we used as a tower waggon at the Black Country Museum.

Cheers for the ID, chaps - Albion I'd heard of as a manufacturer, but the Claymore is new to me. That seems to be exactly what it is.

Very plain front-end treatment, but no doubt functional enough.

The green example was a bit of a fixture in a field beside the dual carriageway for many a long year; it seems that one day, about twelve years ago, I had the presence of mind to pull over and snap it.

Looking at Google Streetview (not updated in this area since 2010...), it seems to have ended its days as a not-really-mobile advertising board for the building business behind - presumably the front end modifications were made to allow it to be dragged into place by a tractor or some such.

It's been gone a long time now, mind - presumably scrapped - but you'll be heartened to learn there's a completely ruined LDV beavertail with a broken chassis slumbering in the same spot today.

Not one but two ERFs were about this week. I thought that was @Six-cylinder's JCB on the yellow one.

And a couple of even older recovery trucks - they're genuine M and P plates and both over 25 years old.

Makes you realise how modern those Scanias looked at the time.

Seeing how you know *who* I'm on about...

All I'll say is seeing an Original coloured vehicle next to an new really makes you see what a downgrade it is.
