Truck Shite

Love the Leyland dromedary tank, such a neat idea. My school had Vol 2 of 'Leyland Buses' in the library; I was about the only person who bothered with it. And I wondered why the girls all thought I was weird? Quite fancy a copy now, but it's one helluva book. A light bedtime read it ain't.

I'm borrowing this photo...

SEDDONATKINSON-LESBASTON.jpg

...because I wasn't in a position to snap the truck myself. The most remarkable thing is, that it was earning its' keep when I saw it this afternoon! Hauling a load of steel joists up the Edinburgh City Bypass. Vintage trucks out and about of a weekend, give me a smile, and I usually give them a flash and a wave. But this was a proper jaw-dropper.

I googled it earlier on, and it seems that Les Baston is a bit of a legend, on account of this old girl. No wonder. Hats off...

Puts my most recent truckshite spot to shame, but it's going in anyway.

IMAG1380.jpg

It's at least 10 years old, immaculate, and still touring Europe and who knows where else (the E.Europeans were very frequent visitors to the Middle East and further, back in the day.), and I wouldn't be surprised if it were an ex-Ferrari team truck. There must be a few! Allegedly, they were tweaked by Iveco for even more head gasket ruining power...

Here's another 401 in working clothes-

I fugging live 400s - this late one is still earning it's keep for showmen round here, seems a bit of an oddball choice...

Sure I read it somewhere that the woeful nature of the York diesels was part of the reason why the A-series failed to take off. Dunno how true it is though having never had the pleasure of a York diesel.

Also, that 8 legger Foden Showmans wagon is superb!

York engines were not the best. the A series could be had with 2.4 4 pot or 3.5 six pot york engines, the six being the four with two extra pots tacked on. unless the timing was absolutely dead on set properly they could prove almost impossible to start on a cold morning. a popular fitment was the Ki gas dispenser, kind of like a permanently plumbed in easystart can with replaceable container. yes they really were that bad. sounded nice in a thrummy VW LT way, but not much in the way of power either. easier to put up with the crap fuel consumption and buy the 3.0 essex V6 petrol version.

The A series was nowhere near as popular as the transit and higher weight D series, designed as it was to compete with the early mega-cube mercedes vans although they did prove reasonably popular with local authorities as council minibuses and the AA used a number of them as recovery trucks.

they are very rare today even in preservation circles and A series unique parts (such as suspension/steering) are virtually extinct.

Paralympian equestrian rider Lee Pearson appears to have excellent shite credentials:

I saw one of those Volvos on the motorway in use as a logging truck a week ago. ...looked pretty similar to that one.

With that Combo Pearson has won gold from autoshite for excellent truck selection.

This legendary one? If so good to know that it is still going strong :D :

It has also been 'captured' by Fryske of this parish, possibly in Worcestershire, but unfortunately I've never seen it out and about myself :(

Not quite as old as the Volvo, but here is one that I did spot. There can't be too many B series ERFs still in commercial use, even by fairs, so I was pleased to spot this while taking the dog for a walk a couple of weeks ago:

Happily the annual fun fair at Burntisland has a smattering of B-Series and the odd older wagon. They are getting pretty rare elsewhere though...

Could it be a worthy reason to visit Fucking Fife?

Indeed it is that one. I had heard of it a few years ago and I assumed it was long gone by now. It is a massive truck, with an impressive "presence" for a vehicle of its age and made quite a sight as it thundered along the motorway with a load of logs. In a way that would only happen to a shiter seeing it properly made my day. :D

I will have to see if I can persuade the boss to let me go through the photo archive of our place again, there is some GOLD in there.

For now, have a shit picture of my shite being towed by our Dodge Shite50:

Been after this one (or one of its' brethren) for ages...

...specifically 'cos I mentioned it to Tayne in my spotted thread ages ago. Sadly, I've had to lift this pic from eBay, 'cos its going to a new home, so my chance has passed :(

Brian Patterson's had a few of these on agri/forestry work for years, but seems to be more into crane hire and engineering these days. Must check next time I'm up that way, whether that's the case or not.

There was something similar for sale at the Truck Show I went to a few months back. BRB...

Obv. either could be crazy money but may be worth a call?

Sorry, I meant in the spottage sense!

Just today, I've seen an 05-plate Foden Alpha in Mr Patterson's livery, all shiny and freshly painted. So he hasn't given up yet.

Altho', having said that, when (hopefully not if) I get around to buying my own motor, it will be something suitably shitey. But a bit easier on the juice than a double-drive Foden, and a bit cheaper too. They're fetching strong money now, as working motors, now the export market's calmed down a bit. I could score a usable Renault Premium or Iveco EuroStar for less.

I saw the recovery lorry and thought it was nice but I initially didn't realise that it was the beast below that was the subject.

What a restoration! It's amazing what some of these coachbuilders can do. I remember Alex Anderson had some of his original fleet that had become mere rusty husks by the 1990s due to being left in the elements for so long, but are now show winning wagons!

Id love to see some pics of the Stars rebuild!

I've only ever seen a few aerial shots of the interior of that DAF museum. It looks fuggin' ace, with all the engines and whatnot on display.

That DAF museum looks ace.

There's a great shite connection too, as DAF started engine production by building Leyland engines under licence.

Pretty sure I saw this (I certainly saw a near-identical twin) keeping up with traffic on the A14 Westbound today. This almost went on the grin thread.

That's probably the most photographed truck in Britain, and rightly so.

Saw one of these today (or something very similar) and it looked quite impressive

...though from what Merc truck drivers I've talked to recently say it'll probably be rubbish.

I know the bloke who owns this firm: http://www.woodsides.com/ and he told me a while ago that Merc HGV's have been "less than good" for a few years now. Seems to have no trouble getting them fixed, though.

Awesome, looks like an F89 model. Great nick too, most are over-restored and signwritten to buggery. Trouser TENTAGE :D

EDIT, thought the 6 wheel ones were 89's, bloody big sign on top says nay though

That is GR88 and it's an early one with the narrow grille too. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think all F89s were LHD and had the wide grille. Here's a model F88 I made a couple of years ago - I have the wide grille cab in my future projects box too.

That's a fantastic image. Turner would have been proud to have produced such a masterpiece.
