Dave reviews a dashcam

Spot on timing that we happened to be talking about them and Which happened to do something about them this month!

The price is far too salty for my liking though, I'll either try a cheapy ebay one and set my expectations low or wait for them to come down in price or just not bother at all yet...

RE hardwiring, if you get one of the kits that has the inline blade fuse adapter thingy (nextbase kit is a tenner off eBay - other brands available) then it really is childs play. Pick any system that comes live with ignition, remove fuse, plug the adapter into the fuse box and place the original fuse in the adapter, simples! Then just attach the earth wore to any suitable earthing point and you're away. Wired two up yesterday, took about 10 mins each, cables just tuck behind the windscreen and door seals.

Much more convenient, means I don't have to unplug the cam every time I want to use sat nav or charge my phone etc.

I bought 2 of those for my Bluetooth kit, then discovered they need micro fuses to plug into them. I only have normal ones. I'll buy some one day...

I read about how shit cheap dash are cams here and ordered what is for me an expensive one. It's an Ausdom 118 at 50 quid from Amazon. Handy size for old vehicles with small screens. I stuck it in the Loadstar and set off for Kent. It lasted for 8 miles and switched itself off. I stopped several times and went through its options but it still kept switching off and my only findings are that it's just as shit as my previous £8 ebay model but doesn't even work. I was further delighted to be woken twice during the night by its crappy little intro tune as it randomly switched itself on and off.

I'll go back to the cheap one and put up with having to wipe the card when it's full and return the Arsedom which, incidentally, sports an internal battery run time of a couple of minutes.

The thing had good reviews but what I received has a rubbish air about it that makes me wonder if even unknown brands get pirated.

I try to steer clear of anything modern which involves electricity, but I stuck an cheap electronic speedo in the lorry so that I can see about mending the original proper one.

It looks a bit of a bodge as the hole is too big but I calibrated it against a measured mile and it's good to see the real speed instead of a needle swinging 10 mph each side of an wild guess.

One working electrical item is a win these days.

I think you're better off getting an app for your phone and a holder rather than the cheap nasty ones.

The one I bought Friday I have actually put in the back of my daily commute for now, evidence is only anecdotal at this point and could be completely unrelated, but there does seem to have been an increase in the number of cars keeping their distance.  If that keeps up on the tailgating bellend-infested M6 every day then i'll consider it £83 very well spent indeed.

My G1W-C capacitor edition arrived a few days ago.

Its pretty much the same as my existing G1Ws apart from the capacitor rather than the teeny internal battery, obviously.

Video quality is just as good.

They have also improved the mounting between the camera and the suction cup part as they were pretty shitty on the old ones (I glued mine together) but this one is a lot more secure and shouldnt rattle and fall out as they used to.

The front is still a little too gaudy for my liking so once it has proved itself for a few weeks I will do as I did with the other ones and mask off the lense and hit the front with an aerosol of satin black paint.

If your getting more, I got one with a "stealth" front, read no silver! Came from estore009 on eBay

How much is cheap (if you don't mind me asking)?  Only my AMC speedo works very much in an advisory capacity and since the other gauges don't work at all it's a candidate for replacement.

Is there mileage in a OMGURDASHCAM video thread? Or is it a bit Pistonheady/road captainy?

I got a corker the other day.

I feel stupid for not being on the ball about what they were inevitably gonna do a bit sooner tbh. Horn's pretty good, though.

I don't mind at all, it was 45 pounds from one of those VW bits sellers, they were knocking it out cheap as it looks nothing like a Beetle one. I've got another one made by the same company, VDO, fitted in my Seddon. This one was intended for a JCB tractor and bought new from a military surplus ebay seller for only around £30. One small problem, it reads up to only 45 mph so I calibrated it over double the normal mile specified which means that you need to double whatever it reads. You can make your own trigger by glueing a magnet on the prop and making or nicking a pickup from a bicycle speedo. Or you can look proper shit and just use a bicycle speedo.

most screens can be programmed to go off after a short time , mine is set to come on for a minute so I can see it is working , then when I stop , the recording time is max'd out to 5 mins , that we it catches anybody near the car , or me paying for the petrol ....

A bloke on the gooner facebook group has this exact one and recommends it

https://www.amazon.co.uk/NEXGADGET-Recorder-G-Sensor-Recording-Detection-R3/dp/B01N8UCK3T/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1512752574&sr=8-15&keywords=rear+view+mirror+dash+cam

Granted he's the bloke who says my car will fail it's MOT for sure on a slightly surface grubby brake pipe and I'll have to spend £400 on new pipes as he did FOR SURE M8, but I'm tempted to give it a go next year when I fancy buying a gadget.

Don't know how he managed to spend £400 on a wire brush and some grease or underseal.

afaik in this country the law says you cannot have a screen on that "could distract the driver" which includes dash cams- so there is a setting which allows the screen to go off straight away or with a timed delay

i have a nextbase from when helfrauds had a 15% week- £85 instead of £100

aldis have one for £40 this week

That looks gash! I'd miss my auto-dimming rear view mirror if I fitted that.

But yes, I'd like to get a (slightly less intrusive than that) dashcam at some point. I feel an ever-increasing need for one with the number of utter numpties I see out on the roads.

I struck gold* on Amazon Warehouse and got one of those dash-cams that's actually a bigger rear view mirror in disguise (and in a cool blue shade which does make driving at night more pleasurable rather than being blinded by knobrockets with their foggies on) - double bonus was it came with a 32GB SD card as well. Price paid ? £17.41... It even came with a shitty rear cam which I couldn't be arsed faffing about fitting.

You can power off the screen straight away (part of my pre-drive checks now) and it doesn't distract me at all.

More than presentable pictures, even at night time

It was this one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01J0WVNR2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Clippage (no nobs in footage) - sorry about shit music (can you guess what road it is ?)

This guy is the UK authority on dashcams - well worth checking out the cams he recommends - does a lot of Youtube reviews including footage - http://www.techmoan.com/what-is-the-best-dashcam/

Mainstream, Nextbase is probably the one, but I'd be inclined to go for something cheap and Far Eastern for buttons

I must have bought my MiO cams two years ago this week as it popped up on farcebook. The front one is starting to fuck up though, the sky and certain things look like it is on a bad LSD trip. Not the memory card as it shows on the screen while it's recording. Still kinda works though so it can stay like that til it dies completely.

It does make a difference to tailgaters having one pointing out the back too,I had to borrow my mother's car the other week and had some modern SUV shite burning my eyes out almost all the way to work and back.

https://www.7dayshop.com/deals-with-voucher-code-savings

7dayshop have offers on a couple of different cameras.

The one at the top that seems like a GoPro ripoff at £20 a pop seems decent, my brother has two of them.

Then there's a 'proper' wired-in dashcam further down the page also for £20. I'm tempted to go for one of each.

That is exactly the same model I reviewed at the start of the page...different name but looks identical. It was proper pish.

Timely thread bump though. My anger management problems lead to one G1Wc being smashed into its component parts and the others are slowly failing so I spunked on an Aukey DR02, as recommended by Techmoan on the youtubes.

Its not cheap, but is small, unobtrusive and comes with a wee rear-view camera. initial impressions are good.

I bought a couple of Nextbase GW312's last year. No complaints so far.

Oooh, indeed it is!

Not ordered anything yet. Might just go for one of the action cam things. Then I wonder what I'd even use the action cam for.

I guess it could be fun for recording summer runs along interesting roads at totally legal speeds honest officer.

I want a driver facing cam, people hate the idea of a driver facing cam for some reason.
