Collectioning, Tax and insurance advice needed.

Am looking for a fibreglass shite box, name of Rickman.

There is a very slight possibility I could win one today, Sat.

I can get a car share to collect late Monday afternoon.

I would insure Mon morning, but not have the documents, collect late Mon night.

Would my insurance be registered with DVLA to enable me to tax it?

Does it really matter, as although tax has legally ended when we do the deal, how do the ANPR cameras know on the same day?

Or should I just take the trailer, more hassle, more expense, less fun.

If you insure and tax it on-line, just print the details out and take them with you. I have found you can tax unsinsured cars sometimes, I think the DVLA system is a bit hit and miss. Don't blame me if it goes wrong though.

Are you buying from a shiter? If so the old "we'll sort this out tomorrow'routine works very well!

The xantia showed as taxed way after the v5 came back in my name because I forgot to tax it. Cost me bloody £40 for the first payment though so dont do that!

I taxed a SORN car and insured it at more or less the same time the other day, and got no bother on the 160 mile journey back so it all seems pretty streamlined now.

They only check for insurance under some circumstances.

My subaru came from Northern ireland, and as such I couldn't tax it online as they have to have insurance to tax. (Still drove it home as didn't discover this fact till I was at Belfast docks.)

But generally, they'll let you tax anything if it's MOTd. Just think, if you couldn't tax it till some insurance company managed to pull their finger out and update a database, you'd have loads of newly purchased cars with a golden ticket to drive round without tax - "soz m8, my insurance haven't updated the MID yet"

I was out delivering a car which we had sold yesterday, which we taxed before leaving.  We drove past a police car going the opposite way and after he had turned around and spoke to us when we had stopped, he told us that the car had registered on his system as not taxed.  His car was a normal BMW traffic car, with no outward signs of having ANPR fitted to it.

Thanks folks, have won the bid, will insure monday and try to tax it.

Hoping to sort car share to London via Bla Bla.

You don't need any kind of docs nowadays (except the v5 obvs) for insurance, MOT and tax. All mine are online, just receipts for garage work done and that's as phat as my car doc file gets.

I'd wondered about this too because I've taxed new purchases online the same day as insuring them so it wasn't showing on the MID yet, but it's always gone through. Not seen anything official that they've dropped the requirement for insurance but it seems that way

I also add them as temp vehicles to existing policies and it works out very cheap, not sure whether all insurance companies are game but Admiral don't seem to have a problem with it.

They dropped the requirement for insurance about a year ago.

Never ever pick up a new car without carrying written proof that it's insured. Print out the certificate or at least download it to your phone. If the police spot a car that's not on the MID they impound first and ask questions later.

Absolutely this. Was it someone like dodgytom who fell foul to this mentality and had to wait and pay to get his perfectly legal car from the pound?

Posted

He did, but he's not the only one. You still have to pay the release fee even if you prove the car was insured.

I've still got the insurance cert in the xantia from collecting it, was properly paranoid about that!

People who shall remain anonymous got stopped in Edinburgh last week with no tax or mot but let home with a hundred quid fine,

Mot expired beginning of June 2016 tax expired July 2015 yes you read that right july 2015, not only has said vehicle been up here three times this year but it has also towed horse boxes all over even been abroad and covered 20k in a year,

Complaints about the hundred pounds fine where dismissed by me when I explained they had saved a years tax at £500 quid.

The q reg red one? Look forward to a collection thread!

That's the one. Bit more than I thought they are worth, but just stuck my top offer on in the last few seconds. Any way it's done now!

Got a lift down in a Merc, quite likely a lift back with the RAC.

Wont be much of a collection thread unless its a complete disaster, and I can't work a camera or post photos. Well I can but it takes me half a day.

Have plenty of spare pinto engines, boxes and an escort axle. So as long as the body's OK.........

Back about 2am tomorrow, or later with the RAC.

How does the buyer  "taxing it on the day of collection"  deal with the change of owner which then starts the DVLA automatic process of cashing in any remaining tax and sending it to the vendor?

Here's some musical accompaniment as you think of a reply.

Police won't accept any documentation that you have as proof of it being taxd, motd or insured.

If it is not on their database then they don't want to know.

Only thing it might help with is having reference numbers on to make things more straighforward in contacting companies to verify your paperwork IF it is within working hours.

Change of owner is sellers responsibility.

Obviously you'd want them to do it, but if they don't you can still get a logbook for free later.

Now have tax and insurance papers to take with me, probably not on database but what more can I do. MOT is on database.

Fingers crossed.
