Secret cars

In late 2010, having been in NZ only a few weeks, I was on the case of buying a second car - we didn't need on at that point as Mrs_Jon could easily walk to work but male logic kicked in since we harboured a desire to move to another town, so I thought it best to get something to 'tide us over', so we could have a car each.

Cue purchase of the piece below:

This is it last year, still sitting around doing nothing, as I'd had a heart ruling head moment at time of buying and hadn't noticed the rot in the driver's side foot well/bulkhead. Mrs_Jon had never asked for a terrible 1985 Holden Camira wagon, so I'd palmed it off as mine, justifying its purchase as being covered by funds left over from my Sierra and Imp being sold in the UK, and also as some candlelit vigil type effigy thing to the Cavalier estate 'project' that had littered my parents garage for numerous years after nothing was done to it. Plus, it would have complemented my Commodore of similar-ish vintage - had the paint on this been any good.

Here's a shot of the elegant* front:

Why is this a secret? Well, I only told my wife about it (she never actually placed eyes on it!) and also those involved who had it sitting round their yards for the best part of 5 years were obviously aware of its existence. I also told my brother about it, so no idea if he let on to anyone. I wasn't ashamed of its condition, just the fact that it was far from roadworthy; had it passed a test, it would have been merrily driven as is. It's since been given away though and I can't say I really miss it, in hindsight.

The wife knows I have land rovers, she just doesn't know how many. I have been considering telling her about the one I had shipped up from London last year, but haven't quite got round to it yet.

She was convinced I had bought a tractor a couple of years ago, so wasn't too surprised when the Davey Broon appeared at the beginning of the month.

I have Never kept anything from my wife.  Apart from a full Cavalier GSi interior, that I had in my allotment shed. It was fucked but free, and I took clips and brackets off it for use on other Vauxhalls (great interchangability)

Oh and all the Cavalier GSi from calipers I fitted to other Vauxhalls over the years, and the alloys that she never noticed, on a 1.4 lsi mk3 astra off a 1.6 arctic

I went from an XR3 to a Lada Riva years ago when the insurance premiums went sky high back in the 90s and would occasionally pick my brother up from school in it but he would not acknowledge me or I had to park up about quarter of a mile down the road before he would get in it due too embarrassment.

That's ironic, my brother had a maroon Lada Riva that we used to be compelled to go to the shops in when he visited.

No secret chod, but this reminds me of a secret dream I have.   Our allotments are full of huge plastic poly tunnels and it amuses me to think of giffers like myself plodding up there each morning to tend to illicitly-stored Singer Gazelles and Austin Rubies away from the stony stare of the life-long missus.

I'd have taught him how a 2nd class ride is preferable compared to a 1st class walk, meself.

Around 1989-1990 i still lived at home with the rents,My mates called my mother Hyacinth.we lived on a very quiet older estate.

My old man had a Opaline green VP maestro.

I had a totaly shagged VW scirocco and a mk4 cortina.I swapped the scirocco for a hand painted black MK2 van, that was beyond shonky.

Now at the time,i and my mate's thought this was the best swap of ever. Not thinking my mother would go ballistic at the idea of a hand painted black with MARKY'S SHAGGIN WAGIN in white accross the back doors, van, mate's decided this was a great idea to paint on as well.

Old Stan must have been 147 year old, lived at the bottom of the street,on the corner plot his drive and garage were around the corner to the house,So i shoved the van on his drive hoping he wouldn't go out.moving it around during the day and putting it back on a night.Till one of the neighbours told my mother.

Google pic not mine.

In much the same way as I don't notice if my o/h plants new stuff in the garden, he wouldn't notice if I stuck another couple of cars on the drive. At least for a week or two. Then, eventually, there would be a "what's that?" question. At which point I would have to explain that I had "won another £15 roffle".

As far as my family know I have seven cars at home, they know I have others they just don't know how many, I bought the new tiger and the misses didn't even notice until the oldest daughter said I thought dad's bike was yellow.

Not at present, but back "afore I emigrated I had a SAAB 9000 daily driver and the JAAAAGGG (XK120 replica) at home, then one night EBay called and in a somewhat inebriated state I bought a Merc SLC450, managed to hide that at work for a while before admitting to it so I could bring it home. ----However in the intervening 9 or 10 months I somehow managed to acquire several other Mercs (various) at real knock down prices (I mean less than 100 quid) which all seemed to end up at work slowly being parted out and the bits sold on.

I was actually making some serious coin out of it tbh, plus would cut up the shells o/c and the "car club" would get the benefit of the scrap

My partner doesn't mind when I buy another. In fact she kind of encourages it. It makes me feel uneasy at times. It makes me wonder what she's plotting.

I don't keep anything from my wife, but I sometimes stumble across vehicles I'd forgotten I still owned!

Secrets?

Does it count, if she doesn't mind? She knows about the ones in the barn....
