Memoirs: Bornite’s All Red Fleet

Splashed £27 on a cheap random polisher off of Argos. Relatively good results, certainly for the money.

Car comes up well. It's a 7/10 at best because there are a couple of scabs and the front end lets it down with stone chips. Fortunately, there's no rush to fix anything because the metal is so thick; it's just cosmetic.

Right.  It's about time this found a new home.  It has been exceptional in the last 3 months of ownership - apart from the issue with the crank sensor which was replaced.  I bought it because I feared it was the end of the road for my Avensis, and I really wanted to try one of these against the 190e that I had.  They are so similar that I still, 2,500 miles later, go to find the indicator on the right hand side at every junction!

Things to know

MOT until June 2018. The only advisory for a rear brake bind has been fixed with a new caliper and new disc/pads to the back.

128k

Now wearing gingercators at the front (photos are in this thread)

4 Speed Auto (much tougher than the 5 Speed that followed)

Needs a bit of paint to make it perfect, but it's 8/10 as is.

TBH I'd be interested in a swap - as it owes me a touch more than it's probably worth on the open market in mid november.   Got owt?

I'm not sure I'm masochistic enough for it.  Thanks anyway dude.

Nice Volvo 340 with long MOT. Mmmmmmm, nice.

Strong offer, but the Variomatic is (i think) a deal breaker for me.  If it was 5 speed I'd have done it.

Keep your clutch foot free from harm and tiredness, variomatic is for those lesser* Daf cars, Volvo had CVT don't ya know ;)  :)

Perfect gear for each situation and all that.

You'd look good in it.

Bump. I’ve got something coming on fleet soon, and I’ve been made an unrepeatable offer on something else so space and money required.

I’ve got it advertised at a cheeky £750. There’s a nice AS deal to be done, including finance if truly required.

Took the Winner Wagon out for a blast this afternoon as it’s a glorious day, and the car gets grumpy after about a fortnight of being forgotten.

2nd turn of the key and we were off; me beaming from ear to ear as always.

Spotted another lowly Ford, lonely in a field.

Oh. Pop Plus? Bit too aspirational for me.

Eltisley is famous for just two things. James May crashed a hot air balloon here, and the cricket pavilion was in an episode of The Prisoner.

Seems like a good place to end the update. Next year it will get the other side looking lovely and a rear bumper.

Looking forward to seeing it looking even tidier!

I learned of another base model Ford I hadn't expected last night.  Ford Standard Coupe.

Was one of those Youtube rabbit holes you fall down occasionally.  They used the previous model's grille and such but in paint rather than chrome, only one rear light, a really basic steering wheel, less guages... brilliantly austere stuff.  Was a way for Ford to use up old parts for models going out that would otherwise go to waste, rather like the inverse of 90s special editions.

I read the 'it's time to swap it and move on' post above as pretty shocking, after all the work you'd put into it, and your obvious attachment to the old dear.

Then I realised it was for the Merc, and not the bASe.

Equilibrium is restored.

I can’t foresee a time when the car would be sold. It certainly would never leave the circle of trust. I was very taken with the three door base that sold in the summer, but struggle to accept it’s worth four times what this one is because it has fewer doors.

It really is a very loved little car.

This happened this morning. I don’t think I’ve ever done this to a car!!

Last night the new quarter panel arrived from Germany. He used his own driver who was doing a few UK drops. It was really well packaged and the driver was super friendly.

However

Is that not a MK2 panel? Fuel filler is bigger than Luxembourg and the rear lamp arrangement is wrong.

I’ve messaged the dude, hopefully we can resolve this.

Grr.

If you had SORNed it 5 hours earlier you would have saved a month of tax!

What?! Did I do it wrong?!!

Oh. Panic over. I soiled myself then.

It was paid for 6 months, no DD on this one. Just the other 5 (!)

Yes it is a mk2 quarter

Ah.

Just as well it’ll be easy to return.

Oh.

That is a right bummer, and no mistake. Probably easier to try and flog it in the UK maybe?

Posted

If you got it through eBay I guess you could truthfully tell them 'Item was not as described' and sit back while they refund you leaving the unfortunate seller who's probably made an honest mistake, with a massive throbbing one right up there.

The guy is being very good about it. Says send it back and he will refund. I’ve opened a case on eBay just for ‘belt and braces’ and we can all move on.

I should have checked better but, in my defence, he breaks old fords and sells parts for a living!

Fit it, would look class with the wrong rear bumper. Fits in with the cars history.

Dicky spent ages welding that side up!

Is that the side where the rear glass didn't fit properly?

Posted

I would just keep that panel. Stash it in the loft for a decade then make a tidy profit on it

Posted

^^ As above. How much was it?

I'd stash it.
